Direct observation of growth and collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions
The dynamical behavior of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a gas with
attractive interactions is striking. Quantum theory predicts that BEC of a
spatially homogeneous gas with attractive interactions is precluded by a
conventional phase transition into either a liquid or solid. When confined to a
trap, however, such a condensate can form provided that its occupation number
does not exceed a limiting value. The stability limit is determined by a
balance between self-attraction and a repulsion arising from position-momentum
uncertainty under conditions of spatial confinement. Near the stability limit,
self-attraction can overwhelm the repulsion, causing the condensate to
collapse. Growth of the condensate, therefore, is punctuated by intermittent
collapses, which are triggered either by macroscopic quantum tunneling or
thermal fluctuation. Previous observation of growth and collapse has been
hampered by the stochastic nature of these mechanisms. Here we reduce the
stochasticity by controlling the initial number of condensate atoms using a
two-photon transition to a diatomic molecular state. This enables us to obtain
the first direct observation of the growth of a condensate with attractive

Warped Vacuum Statistics
We consider the effect of warping on the distribution of type IIB flux vacua
constructed with Calabi-Yau orientifolds. We derive an analytical form of the
distribution that incorporates warping and find close agreement with the
results of a Monte Carlo enumeration of vacua. Compared with calculations that
neglect warping, we find that for any finite volume compactification, the
density of vacua is highly diluted in close proximity to the conifold point,
with a steep drop-off within a critical distance.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figure
Beautiful Mirrors at the LHC
We explore the "Beautiful Mirrors" model, which aims to explain the measured
value of , discrepant at the level. This scenario
introduces vector-like quarks which mix with the bottom, subtly affecting its
coupling to the . The spectrum of the new particles consists of two
bottom-like quarks and a charge -4/3 quark, all of which have electroweak
interactions with the third generation. We explore the phenomenology and
discovery reach for these new particles at the LHC, exploring single mirror
quark production modes whose rates are proportional to the same mixing
parameters which resolve the anomaly. We find that for mirror quark
masses is required to
reasonably establish the scenario and extract the relevant mixing parameters.Comment: version to be published in JHE
Anomalous coupling effects in exclusive radiative B-meson decays
The top-quark FCNC processes will be searched for at the CERN LHC, which are
correlated with the B-meson decays. In this paper, we study the effects of
top-quark anomalous interactions in the exclusive radiative and decays. With the current experimental data of
the branching ratios, the direct CP and the isospin asymmetries, bounds on the
coupling from and
from decays are derived,
respectively. The bound on from is generally compatible with that from . However, the isospin asymmetry further
restrict the phase of , and the combined bound results
in the upper limit, , which is lower than the
CDF result. For real , the upper bound on is about of the same order as the discovery
potential of ATLAS with an integrated luminosity of . For
decays, the NP contribution is enhanced by a large CKM factor
, and the constraint on coupling is rather
restrictive, . With refined
measurements to be available at the LHCb and the future super-B factories, we
can get close correlations between and the rare
decays, which will be studied directly at the LHC ATLAS and CMS.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, pdflate
Spontaneous vortices in the formation of Bose-Einstein condensates
Phase transitions are ubiquitous in nature, ranging from protein folding and
denaturisation, to the superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition, to
the decoupling of forces in the early universe. Remarkably, phase transitions
can be arranged into universality classes, where systems having unrelated
microscopic physics exhibit identical scaling behaviour near the critical
point. Here we present an experimental and theoretical study of the
Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition of an atomic gas, focusing on one
prominent universal element of phase transition dynamics: the spontaneous
formation of topological defects during a quench through the transition. While
the microscopic dynamics of defect formation in phase transitions are generally
difficult to investigate, particularly for superfluid phase transitions,
Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) offer unique experimental and theoretical
opportunities for probing such details. Although spontaneously formed vortices
in the condensation transition have been previously predicted to occur, our
results encompass the first experimental observations and statistical
characterisation of spontaneous vortex formation in the condensation
transition. Using microscopic theories that incorporate atomic interactions and
quantum and thermal fluctuations of a finite-temperature Bose gas, we simulate
condensation and observe vortex formation in close quantitative agreement with
our experimental results. Our studies provide further understanding of the
development of coherence in superfluids, and may allow for direct investigation

Measurement of Exclusive B Decays to Final States Containing a Charmed Baryon
Using data collected by the CLEO detector in the Upsilon(4S) region, we
report new measurements of the exclusive decays of B mesons into final states
of the type Lambda_c^+ p-bar n(pi), where n=0,1,2,3. We find signals in modes
with one, two and three pions and an upper limit for the two body decay
Lambda_c^+ pbar. We also make the first measurements of exclusive decays of B
mesons to Sigma_c p-bar n(pi), where n=0,1,2. We find signals in modes with one
and two pions and an upper limit for the two body decay Sigma_c p-bar.
Measurements of these modes shed light on the mechanisms involved in B decays

Measurement of the Masses and Widths of the Sigma_c^++ and Sigma_c^0 Charmed Baryons
Using data recorded by the CLEO II and CLEO II.V detector configurations at
CESR, we report new measurements of the masses of the Sigma_c^{++} and
Sigma_c^0 charmed baryons, and the first measurements of their intrinsic
widths. We find M(Sigma_c^{++}) - M(Lambda_c^+) = 167.4 +- 0.1 +- 0.2 MeV,
Gamma(Sigma_c^{++}) = 2.3 +- 0.2 +- 0.3 MeV, and M(Sigma_c^0) - M(Lambda_c^+) =
167.2 +- 0.1 +- 0.2 MeV, Gamma(Sigma_c^0) = 2.5 +- 0.2 +- 0.3 MeV, where the
uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through

Observation of Exclusive barB --> D(*) K*- Decays
We report the first observation of the exclusive decays \bar B\to
D^{(*)}K^{*-}, using 9.66 x 10^{6} B\bar{B} pairs collected at the \Upsilon(4S)
with the CLEO detector. We measure the following branching fractions: {\cal
B}(B^- -> D^0 K^{*-})=(6.1 +- 1.6 +-1.7)x10^{-4}, {\cal B}(\bar{B^0} ->
D^+K^{*-})=(3.7 +- 1.5 +- 1.0) x 10^{-4}, {\cal B}(\bar{B^0} ->
D^{*+}K^{*-})=(3.8 +- 1.3 +- 0.8) x 10^{-4} and {\cal B}(B^- --> D^{*0}
K^{*-})=(7.7 +- 2.2 +- 2.6) x 10^{-4}. The \bar B ->D^*K^{*-} branching ratios
are the averages of those corresponding to the 00 and 11 helicity states. The
