Remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon polluted systems: Exploiting the bioremediation strategies

    Get PDF
The irrepressible quest for a cheap source of energy to meet the extensive global industrialization demand has expanded the frontiers of petroleum hydrocarbon exploration. These exploration activities amongst others often result in pollution of the environment, thus creating serious imbalance in the biotic and abiotic regimes of the ecosystem. Several remediation alternatives have been in use for the restoration of petroleum hydrocarbon polluted systems. In this paper, we present an overview of bioremediation alternative vis-à-vis other cleanup methods and its adaptations in various polluted systems

Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsy Presenting with Hand Drop in a Young Child

    Get PDF
Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP) results from the deletion of the PMP22 gene in chromosome 17p11.2. Clinically, it presents with painless pressure palsies, typically in the 2nd and 3rd decades of life, being a rare entity in childhood. We present the case study of a six-year-old male child who presented with left hand drop that he kept for over four weeks. Electrophysiological studies suggested HNPP and genetic studies confirmed it. With this paper, we pretend to create awareness to this entity as a diagnosis to be considered in a child with painless monoparesis and to emphasize the importance of electrophysiological studies in the diagnosis

    Nanocapacitive circuit elements

"Natural" lithography was used to prepare arrays of nanoscale capacitors on silicon. The capacitance was verified by a novel technique based on the interaction of a charged substrate with the electron beam of a scanning electron microscope. The "nanocapacitors" possessed a capacitance of ∼1 × 10-16F and were observed to hold charge for over an hour. Our results indicate that fabricating nanostructures using natural lithography may provide a viable alternative for future nanoelectronic devices. © 2008 American Chemical Society

Letter to Andrew Inglis Clark, Tasmania from John B. Moore, New York, 16 Mar 1907

Hopes Clark has recovered from his late illness. Sees Clark's son Conway quite often. Mr Strauss left New York for Washington when he was appointed to the Cabinet so haven't been able to take Conway to meet him. Strauss and his three brothers are all strong Democrats, although Oscar is now a Republican due to his relations with Mr Roosevelt. Talks about the process of electing judges in America and how it impairs the independence of the bench. C4/C237.....Letter transcribed by Jeffrey Gilbert, University of Tasmania

    The spectral variability of FSRQs

The optical variability of 29 flat spectrum radio quasars in SDSS Stripe 82 region are investigated by using DR7 released multi-epoch data. All FSRQs show variations with overall amplitude ranging from 0.24 mag to 3.46 mag in different sources. About half of FSRQs show a bluer-when-brighter trend, which is commonly observed for blazars. However, only one source shows a redder-when-brighter trend, which implies it is rare in FSRQs. In this source, the thermal emission may likely be responsible for the spectral behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, as a proceeding paper of the conference "Multiwavelength Variability of Blazars", Guangzhou, China, September 22-24, 201
