The steady state quantum statistics of a non-Markovian atom laser
We present a fully quantum mechanical treatment of a single-mode atomic
cavity with a pumping mechanism and an output coupling to a continuum of
external modes. This system is a schematic description of an atom laser. In the
dilute limit where atom-atom interactions are negligible, we have been able to
solve this model without making the Born and Markov approximations. When
coupling into free space, it is shown that for reasonable parameters there is a
bound state which does not disperse, which means that there is no steady state.
This bound state does not exist when gravity is included, and in that case the
system reaches a steady state. We develop equations of motion for the two-time
correlation in the presence of pumping and gravity in the output modes. We then
calculate the steady-state output energy flux from the laser.Comment: 14 pages (twocloumn), 6 figure
Effects of interatomic collisions on atom laser outcoupling
We present a computational approach to the outcoupling in a simple
one-dimensional atom laser model, the objective being to circumvent
mathematical difficulties arising from the breakdown of the Born and Markov
approximations. The approach relies on the discretization of the continuum
representing the reservoir of output modes, which allows the treatment of
arbitrary forms of outcoupling as well as the incorporation of non-linear terms
in the Hamiltonian, associated with interatomic collisions. By considering a
single-mode trapped condensate, we study the influence of elastic collisions
between trapped and free atoms on the quasi steady-state population of the
trap, as well as the energy distribution and the coherence of the outcoupled
atoms.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, to appear in J. Phys.
Coherent Tunneling of Atoms from Bose-condensed Gases at Finite Temperatures
Tunneling of atoms between two trapped Bose-condensed gases at finite
temperatures is explored using a many-body linear response tunneling formalism
similar to that used in superconductors. To lowest order, the tunneling
currents can be expressed quite generally in terms of the single-particle
Green's functions of the isolated Bose gases. A coherent first-order tunneling
Josephson current between two atomic Bose-condensates is found, in addition to
coherent and dissipative contributions from second-order
condensate-noncondensate and noncondensate-noncondensate tunneling. Our work is
a generalization of Meier and Zwerger, who recently treated tunneling between
uniform atomic Bose gases. We apply our formalism to the analysis of an
out-coupling experiment induced by light wave fields, using a simple
Bogoliubov-Popov quasiparticle approximation for the trapped Bose gas. For
tunneling into the vacuum, we recover the results of Japha, Choi, Burnett and
Band, who recently pointed out the usefulness of studying the spectrum of
out-coupled atoms. In particular, we show that the small tunneling current of
noncondensate atoms from a trapped Bose gas has a broad spectrum of energies,
with a characteristic structure associated with the Bogoliubov quasiparticle
u^2 and v^2 amplitudes.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, minor changes, to appear in PR
Resonance fluorescence in a band gap material: Direct numerical simulation of non-Markovian evolution
A numerical method of calculating the non-Markovian evolution of a driven
atom radiating into a structured continuum is developed. The formal solution
for the atomic reduced density matrix is written as a Markovian algorithm by
introducing a set of additional, virtual density matrices which follow, to the
level of approximation of the algorithm, all the possible trajectories of the
photons in the electromagnetic field. The technique is perturbative in the
sense that more virtual density matrices are required as the product of the
effective memory time and the effective coupling strength become larger. The
number of density matrices required is given by where is the number
of timesteps per memory time. The technique is applied to the problem of a
driven two-level atom radiating close to a photonic band gap and the
steady-state correlation function of the atom is calculated.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
Magnetic resonance imaging correlates of first-episode psychosis in young adult male patients: combined analysis of grey and white matter.
Background: Several patterns of grey and white matter changes have been separately described in young adults with first-episode psychosis. Concomitant investigation of grey and white matter densities in patients with first-episode psychosis without other psychiatric comorbidities that include all relevant imaging markers could provide clues to the neurodevelopmental hypothesis in schizophrenia. Methods: We recruited patients with first-episode psychosis diagnosed according to the DSM-IV-TR and matched controls. All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis and mean diffusivity voxel-based analysis (VBA) were used for grey matter data. Fractional anisotropy and axial, radial and mean diffusivity were analyzed using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) for white matter data. Results: We included 15 patients and 16 controls. The mean diffusivity VBA showed significantly greater mean diffusivity in the first-episode psychosis than in the control group in the lingual gyrus bilaterally, the occipital fusiform gyrus bilaterally, the right lateral occipital gyrus and the right inferior temporal gyrus. Moreover, the TBSS analysis revealed a lower fractional anisotropy in the first-episode psychosis than in the control group in the genu of the corpus callosum, minor forceps, corticospinal tract, right superior longitudinal fasciculus, left middle cerebellar peduncle, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus and the posterior part of the fronto-occipital fasciculus. This analysis also revealed greater radial diffusivity in the first-episode psychosis than in the control group in the right corticospinal tract, right superior longitudinal fasciculus and left middle cerebellar peduncle. Limitations: The modest sample size and the absence of women in our series could limit the impact of our results. Conclusion: Our results highlight the structural vulnerability of grey matter in posterior areas of the brain among young adult male patients with first-episode psychosis. Moreover, the concomitant greater radial diffusivity within several regions already revealed by the fractional anisotropy analysis supports the idea of a late myelination in patients with first-episode psychosis
An Atom Laser Based on Raman Transitions
In this paper we present an atom laser scheme using a Raman transition for
the output coupling of atoms. A beam of thermal atoms (bosons) in a metastable
atomic state are pumped into a multimode atomic cavity. This cavity is
coupled through spontaneous emission to a single mode of another cavity for the
ground atomic state, . Above a certain threshold pumping rate a large
number of atoms, , builds up in this single quantum state and transitions
to the ground state of the cavity become enhanced by a factor .
Atoms in this state are then coupled to the outside of the cavity with a Raman
transition. This changes the internal state of the atom and imparts a momentum
kick, allowing the atoms to leave the system.Comment: 8 pages, 4 postscript figures, uses RevTex, home page at

Asymptotics and local constancy of characters of p-adic groups
In this paper we study quantitative aspects of trace characters
of reductive -adic groups when the representation varies. Our approach
is based on the local constancy of characters and we survey some other related
results. We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of relative to
the formal degree of , which we are able to prove in the case where
is a tame supercuspidal. The proof builds on J.-K.~Yu's construction and the
structure of Moy-Prasad subgroups.Comment: Proceedings of Simons symposium on the trace formul
