    Topological insulator particles as optically induced oscillators: towards dynamical force measurements and optical rheology

    We report the first experimental study upon the optical trapping and manipulation of topological insulator (TI) particles. By virtue of the unique TI properties, which have a conducting surface and an insulating bulk, the particles present a peculiar behaviour in the presence of a single laser beam optical tweezers: they oscillate in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the laser propagation, as a result of the competition between radiation pressure and gradient forces. In other words, TI particles behave as optically induced oscillators, allowing dynamical measurements with unprecedented simplicity and purely optical control. Actually, optical rheology of soft matter interfaces and biological membranes, as well as dynamical force measurements in macromolecules and biopolymers, may be quoted as feasible possibilities for the near future.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     O conhecimento da evapotranspiração de referência é fundamental para se determinar a lâmina correta de irrigação, evitando assim, o desperdício de água ou a sua aplicação deficitária. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar, para as condições de Piripiri- PI, diferentes métodos de estimativa da evapotranspiração de referência (Hargreaves-Samani, Ivanov, Jensen-Haise,Blaney-Criddle e Priestley-Taylor) comparando-os com o método padrão de Penman-Monteith-FAO. A estimativa da ETo foi feita para o período anual, chuvoso (janeiro a maio) e seco (junho a dezembro). Os dados meteorológicos foram obtidos de 01 de janeiro de 2008 a 31 de dezembro de 2012 na estação meteorológica convencional, do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), situada no município de Piripiri, PI (04º 20? 00,4? S; 41º 43' 52? W; Alt. 164 m). Foram coletados dados diários das temperaturas máxima (Tmáx), média (Tméd) e mínima (Tmín) do ar, insolação, umidade relativa média do ar (URméd), precipitações e velocidade do vento a 10 m de altura, sendo posteriormente convertida para 2 m.Concluiu-se que o método de Hargreaves- Samani foi o que apresentou melhor desempenho nas três escalas de tempo avaliadas (anual, chuvoso e seco).CONBEA 2014

    On topological spin excitations on a rigid torus

    We study Heisenberg model of classical spins lying on the toroidal support, whose internal and external radii are rr and RR, respectively. The isotropic regime is characterized by a fractional soliton solution. Whenever the torus size is very large, RR\to\infty, its charge equals unity and the soliton effectively lies on an infinite cylinder. However, for R=0 the spherical geometry is recovered and we obtain that configuration and energy of a soliton lying on a sphere. Vortex-like configurations are also supported: in a ring torus (R>rR>r) such excitations present no core where energy could blow up. At the limit RR\to\infty we are effectively describing it on an infinite cylinder, where the spins appear to be practically parallel to each other, yielding no net energy. On the other hand, in a horn torus (R=rR=r) a singular core takes place, while for R<rR<r (spindle torus) two such singularities appear. If RR is further diminished until vanish we recover vortex configuration on a sphere.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    Mobility Edge in Aperiodic Kronig-Penney Potentials with Correlated Disorder: Perturbative Approach

    It is shown that a non-periodic Kronig-Penney model exhibits mobility edges if the positions of the scatterers are correlated at long distances. An analytical expression for the energy-dependent localization length is derived for weak disorder in terms of the real-space correlators defining the structural disorder in these systems. We also present an algorithm to construct a non-periodic but correlated sequence exhibiting desired mobility edges. This result could be used to construct window filters in electronic, acoustic, or photonic non-periodic structures.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages including 2 Postscript figure
