The Scruffy City: Development in Knoxville, TN

Urbanization and globalization are two processes that have dramatically changed economic, political, and social structures across modern society. When impacts of globalization and urbanization are discussed by academics, policy makers, or the media, the emphasis is usually on large mega-cities such as New York City. Despite this focus on these large urban cities, most of the growth in urban populations across the globe has occurred in smaller cities. The purpose of this study is to highlight some of the ways in which globalization has impacted a smaller city and some of the strategies city leaders and developers have adopted to adapt to these changing structures. This is accomplished by analyzing development in Knoxville, the third largest city in the state of Tennessee. Knoxville is used to understand changing urban structures, such as neoliberal suburbanization and gentrification; changing economic structures, such as deindustrialization and tourism based on place or heritage; and the increasing use of public-private partnerships between the City of Knoxville and developers. This project concludes that this snapshot of development in Knoxville helps integrate growth machine theory into theories of neoliberalism and globalization, which furthers understanding of urban processes. Furthermore, changing economic structures pressure local governments to pursue alternative economic opportunities

From Gay Street to Turkey Creek: Knoxville’s Urban and Suburban Growth Machines

Using growth machine theory, this study examines the newly built lifestyle center of the suburban Turkey Creek development and the redevelopment of the Gay Street corridor in downtown Knoxville, TN. Growth machine theory is one of sociology\u27s predominant theories used to understand development and growth projects in metropolitan areas, and although not specifically defined in current literature, I suggest there are many differences in suburban and urban growth machines. This study examines the local dependency and organization of pro-growth coalitions; the tactics, ideology, and culture used to promote development projects; and community reactions. Upon completion of this project, I found that urban and suburban growth machines differed in local dependency and level of community opposition, but utilized similar tactics, ideology, and culture. Furthermore, several themes emerged at the conclusion of this project- the attempts to structure social life around retail centers, suburbanization, and the increasing influence of growth language in everyday life- the further impact increasing pro-growth coalition influence

University School Training Model Consultation Practica: Dismantling Anti-Black Racism with Predominately White Educators to Improve School, Family, Community Collaborations with Black Families and Community Stakeholders

This article outlines a consultation case study facilitated in an urban elementary school through the University School Training Model (USTM) (Colles et al., 2019; Morris et al., 2016). The USTM is a collaboration between an APA accredited Counseling Psychology doctoral program and an urban school district to provide racially responsive counseling and consulting services and graduate level training. The case study details a consultation practica to improve school, family, and community collaborations in an urban elementary school with predominantly Black stakeholders and a predominantly White female school staff. The introduction, background, and self-evaluation of the consultation process are reviewed. Project demographics, situation background, consultee role, and problem statement are then addressed. The goals, intervention grids, evaluation, termination, and post consultation follow-up are discussed. The transformative impact of consulting with urban school leaders to dismantle educational practices that uphold racism, white supremacy, and anti-Blackness that inhibit school, family, and community collaborations is highlighted

They have numerous applications in tree representations of permutations, data structures in computer science and probabilistic models in a multitude of problems. We use a generating function approach for the computation of parameters arising from such trees. The generating functions for some parameters are shown to be related to ordinary differential equations. Singularity analysis is then used to analyze several parameters of the trees asymptotically.Various classes of trees are considered. Parameters such as depth and path length for heap ordered trees have been analyzed in [35]. We follow a similar approach to determine grand averages for such trees. The model is that p of the n nodes are labelled at random in ôn p(ways, and the characteristic parameters depend on these labelled nodes. Also, we will attempt to look at the limiting distributions involved. Often, when they are Gaussian, Hwang's quasi power theorem, from [18], can be employed. Spanning tree size and the Wiener index for binary search trees have been computed in [33]. The Wiener index is the sum of all distances between pairs of nodes in a tree. Arelated parameter of interest is the Steiner distance which generalises, to sets of k nodes, the Wiener index (k=2). Furthermore, the distribution of the size of the ancestor-tree and of the induced spanning subtree for random trees is presented in [30]. The same procedure is followed to obtain the Steiner distance for heap ordered trees and for other varieties of increasing trees
