How to enhance crop production and nitrogen fluxes? A result-oriented scheme to evaluate best agri-environmental measures in Veneto Region, Italy
The cost-effectiveness of adopting agri-environmental measures (AEMs) in Europe, which combine agricultural productions with reduced N losses, is debated due to poorly targeted site-specific funding that is allocated regardless of local variability. An integrated DAYCENT model-GIS platform was developed combining pedo-climatic and agricultural systems information. The aim was to evaluate best strategies to improve N fluxes of agro-ecosystems within a perspective of sustainable intensification. Indicators of agronomic efficiency and environmental quality were considered. The results showed that agronomic benefits were observed with a continuous soil cover (conservation agriculture and cover crops), which enhanced nitrogen use efficiency (+17%) and crop yields (+34%), although in some cases these might be overestimated due to modelling limitations. An overall environmental improvement was found with continuous soil cover and long-term change from mineral to organic inputs (NLeach 45 Mg ha 121), which were effective in the sandy soils of western and eastern Veneto with low SOM, improving the soil-water balance and nutrients availability over time. Results suggest that AEM subsidies should be allocated at a site-specific level that includes pedo-climatic variability, following a result-oriented approach
Electronic structure and magnetic properties of metallocene multiple-decker sandwich nanowires
We present a study of the electronic and magnetic properties of the
multiple-decker sandwich nanowires () composed of cyclopentadienyl (CP)
rings and 3d transition metal atoms (M=Ti to Ni) using first-principles
techniques. We demonstrate using Density Functional Theory that structural
relaxation play an important role in determining the magnetic ground-state of
the system. Notably, the computed magnetic moment is zero in , while in
a significant turn-up in magnetic moment is evidenced. Two compounds
show a half-metallic ferromagnetic ground state with a gap within
minority/majority spin channel. In order to study the effect of electronic
correlations upon the half-metallic ground states in , we introduce a
simplified three-bands Hubbard model which is solved within the Variational
Cluster Approach. We discuss the results as a function of size of the reference
cluster and the strength of average Coulomb and exchange parameters.
Our results demonstrate that for the range of studied parameters and
the half-metallic character is not maintained in the presence of
local Coulomb interactions.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, submited to PR
Fertimetro, a Principle and Device to Measure Soil Nutrient Availability for Plants by Microbial Degradation Rates on Differently-Spiked Buried Threads
A novel patented method (PCT/IB2012/001157: Squartini, Concheri, Tiozzo, University of Padova) and the corresponding application devices, suitable to measure soil fertility, are presented. The availability or deficiency of specific nutrients for crops is assessed by monitoring the kinetics of progressive weakening of cotton or silk threads due to in situ microbial activity. The method is based on a nutrient-primed incremented substrate degradation principle. Threads are buried as is or pre-impregnated with N or P solutions, and the acceleration of the degradation rate for the N-supplemented or P-supplemented thread, in comparison to the untreated thread, is proportional to the lack of the corresponding nutrient in that soil. Tests were validated on corn crops in plots receiving increasing fertilizer rates in a historical rotation that has been established since 1962. The measurement carried out in May significantly correlated with the subsequent crop yields recorded in October. The analysis allows an early, inexpensive, fast, and reproducible self-assessment at field level to improve fertilization rates. The device is envisaged as a user-friendly tool for agronomy, horticulture, and any environmental applications where organic matter cycling, soil quality, and specific nutrients excess or deficiency are critical considerations
Magnetism and electronic structure calculation of SmN
The results of the electronic structure calculations performed on SmN by
using the LDA+U method with and without including the spin-orbit coupling are
presented. Within the LDA+U approach, a N(2) band polarization of is induced by Sm(4)-N(2) hybridization, and a half-metallic
ground state is obtained. By including spin-orbit coupling the magnetic
structure was shown to be antiferromagnetic of type II, with Sm spin and
orbital moments nearly cancelling. This results into a semiconducting ground
state, which is in agreement with experimental results.Comment: Submitted to JPCM, 12 pages, 4 figure
Memory Effect and Triplet Pairing Generation in the Superconducting Exchange Biased Co/CoOx/Cu41Ni59/Nb/Cu41Ni59 Layered Heterostructure
We fabricated a nanolayered hybrid superconductor-ferromagnet spin-valve
structure, the resistive state of which depends on the preceding magnetic field
polarity. The effect is based on a strong exchange bias (about -2 kOe) on a
diluted ferromagnetic copper-nickel alloy and generation of a long range odd in
frequency triplet pairing component. The difference of high and low resistance
states at zero magnetic field is 90% of the normal state resistance for a
transport current of 250 {\mu}A and still around 42% for 10 {\mu}A. Both logic
states of the structure do not require biasing fields or currents in the idle
mode.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Accepted to Applied Physics Letter
Monitoring and Modeling Farmland Productivity Along the Venice Coastland, Italy
AbstractThe southern portion of the Venice coastland is a very precarious environment and salt contamination of land and groundwater is a severe problem that is seriously impacting the farmland productivity. Geophysical surveys, lab testing and continuous monitoring of hydrological parameters together with crop yield distribution were performed and acquired from 2010 to 2012 in a 21ha basin cultivated with maize crop and representative of the area. The dataset is here used to set-up a numerical model of soil moisture dynamics coupled with plant transpiration, photosynthesis and growth. The hydraulic model is linked to the atmosphere by the calculation of the stomatal conductance which is optimized for maximum carbon gain. The model is applied to the field site to understand the impact of land elevation, soil heterogeneities, and seawater contamination on land productivity
Modeling rainfall-driven transport of Glyphosate in the vadose zone of two experimental sites in North-East Italy
A vertical one-dimensional analysis of infiltration processes and mobility of a tracer (potassium bromide) and a glyphosate-based herbicide, both subjected to hydrological forcing, was performed. Glyphosate is a widespread herbicide whose potential harmfulness and mobility under hydrological forcing have not been fully understood yet. Here, the spatio-temporal evolution of the two compounds was monitored for one year in two experimental sites (Settolo - Valdobbiadene, Colnù - Conegliano), located within the production area of the Prosecco wine (Treviso, Italy). In each experimental site the activities were carried out on two 25 m2 plots located at distances of 50-100 m from each other. The interpretative analyses considered rainwater infiltration as the driving mechanism of the herbicide transport and allowed us to obtain the calibration of a one-dimensional hydrologic model in each monitored plot. Different scenarios of the tracer evolution were simulated considering the pedologic properties of the shallower soil layers, the status of the plant coverage and of the root apparati, leading to a satisfactory reproduction of the observations in both the experimental sites. Modeling the mobility of the herbicide, considering also the degradation to its metabolite AMPA, proved to be more challenging, due to the tendency of glyphosate to be adsorbed to the soil matrix rather than be dissolved in water and transported toward deeper soil layers. Nevertheless, the analysis of model results for tracer and herbicide, compared with in situ observations, suggests that the transport of the glyphosate can take place even when it is adsorbed to the soil, through the movement, triggered by intense precipitation events, of microscopic soil particles within preferential flow paths
Interleukin-6 expression by hypothalamic microglia in multiple inflammatory contexts: a systematic review
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a unique cytokine that can play both pro- and anti-inflammatory roles depending on the anatomical site and conditions under which it has been induced. Specific neurons of the hypothalamus provide important signals to control food intake and energy expenditure. In individuals with obesity, a microglia-dependent inflammatory response damages the neural circuits responsible for maintaining whole-body energy homeostasis, resulting in a positive energy balance. However, little is known about the role of IL-6 in the regulation of hypothalamic microglia. In this systematic review, we asked what types of conditions and stimuli could modulate microglial IL-6 expression in murine model. We searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases and analyzed 13 articles that evaluated diverse contexts and study models focused on IL-6 expression and microglia activation, including the effects of stress, hypoxia, infection, neonatal overfeeding and nicotine exposure, lipopolysaccharide stimulus, hormones, exercise protocols, and aging. The results presented in this review emphasized the role of injury-like stimuli, under which IL-6 acts as a proinflammatory cytokine, concomitant with marked microglial activation, which drive hypothalamic neuroinflammation. Emerging evidence indicates an important correlation of basal IL-6 levels and microglial function with the maintenance of hypothalamic homeostasis. Advances in our understanding of these different contexts will lead to the development of more specific pharmacological approaches for the management of acute and chronic conditions, like obesity and metabolic diseases, without disturbing the homeostatic functions of IL-6 and microglia in the hypothalamus.2019COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPSem informação2013/07607-
