    Host age selection behaviour of Trichogramma aurosum Sugonjaev & Sorokina (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

    Host age selection in several German strains of Trichogramma aurosum Sugonjaev & Sorokina was examined in laboratory choice tests under direct observation for 90 min., in order to select candidate strains for attempts at controlling the codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Experiments were conducted at room temperature by exposing combinations of two host ages (zero vs. 4 and 1 vs. 5-day old) to a single female wasp. Host age did not appear to affect the wasps parasitization behaviour, although they spent longer time drilling on old eggs (4 and 5 days old) compared with fresh ones (0 and 1 day old). This not necessarily means that they preferred fresh eggs over old ones, since both type of hosts were parasitized in the choice test. Possibly an increased mechanical resistance of the chorion of older eggs was responsible for the prolonged drilling time. Mean drumming time was independent of host age. Mean duration of drilling and drumming was in general longest in the first and last egg attacked by all T. aurosum strains tested and for all host ages. Drilling time consumed more than 80% of the mean handling time of all strains tested for all host ages, followed by resting and walking

    PhiGO 2020 stakeholder workshop : information dissemination and data portal design

    This report presents the summarised responses from participants at two stakeholder workshops, held in Iloilo and Pampanga, between 28th January and 5th of February 2020. The workshop focus centred on how stakeholders access hydrological information relevant to their jobs, and the required format that this data needs to take. Participants were asked about their current access routes to information, and their ideal access platform/web portal for hydrological data. This was so that the outputs of the PhiGO project could be tailored to meet as many stakeholder requirements as possible. Stakeholders clearly identified several common points for data access and formats across a number of sectors, and both in their professional and personal environments. Stakeholders required that data is predominantly visual, with a strong focus on maps, figures, and graphs, but backed up by information that can be interrogated, whether that be tabular data or summarised reports. Stakeholders desired a web portal that needed to be clean and easy to use, with guidance for navigation and explanation of complex terms. Detailed information must also be readily available, and the data should be available for offline downloading. The feedback from these stakeholders will feed directly into the final design of the PhiGO data portal

    Avaliaram-se as características biológicas de cinco linhagens de T. pretiosum Riley (Hym.:Trichogrammatidae), coletadas em plantios comerciais de tomate, e criados em ovos de A. kuehniella (Zeller) e S. cerealella (Olivier). A taxa de parasitismo das cinco linhagens variou de 56,1 a 68,6%, quando o hospedeiro foi A. kuehniella, sendo superior à do hospedeiro S. cerealella. A viabilidade de todas as linhagens, quando criadas em ovos de S. cerealella, foi superior a 90%; no entanto, somente nas linhagens provenientes de Afonso Cláudio e Venda Nova do Imigrante é que a viabilidade das linhagens de Trichogramma criadas em ovos de S. cerealella, foram significativamente maiores que as criadas sobre A. kuehniella. A longevidade dos descendentes submetidos ao parasitismo foi superior para todas as linhagens quando criadas em ovos de A. kuehniella. Ambos os hospedeiros podem ser empregados na criação massal das cinco linhagens estudadas. Contudo, tomando-se por base a taxa de parasitismo e a qualidade da progênie, o hospedeiro A. kuehniella demonstrou ser superior a S. cerealella.<br>The biological characteristics of five lineages of T. pretiosum Riley (Hym.: Trichogrammatidae), collected from tomato crops, and reared in A. kuehniella (Zeller) and S. cerealella (Olivier) eggs were evaluated. The parasitism rate of the lineages, varied from 56,1 to 68.6%, when the host was A. kuehniella, being higher than for S. cerealella. The viability of all lineages, when reared in S. cerealella eggs, was superior to 90%; however, only those lineages reared in S. cerealella eggs and collected in Afonso Cláudio and Venda Nova dos Imigrantes (Espirito Santo State, Brazil) were significantly higher than those reared on A. kuehniella. The longevity of the offspring submitted to the parasitism, was higher in all the lineages reared in A. kuehniella eggs. All five lineages can be mass reared using both hosts. However, considering the parasitism rate and the quality of the progeny, the host A. kuehniella seems to be superior than S. cerealell
