    The “Historical Materials BAG”: A New Facilitated Access to Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Analyses for Cultural Heritage Materials at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

    The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) has recently commissioned the new Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS). The gain in brightness as well as the continuous development of beamline instruments boosts the beamline performances, in particular in terms of accelerated data acquisition. This has motivated the development of new access modes as an alternative to standard proposals for access to beamtime, in particular via the “block allocation group” (BAG) mode. Here, we present the recently implemented “historical materials BAG”: a community proposal giving to 10 European institutes the opportunity for guaranteed beamtime at two X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) beamlines—ID13, for 2D high lateral resolution XRPD mapping, and ID22 for high angular resolution XRPD bulk analyses—with a particular focus on applications to cultural heritage. The capabilities offered by these instruments, the specific hardware and software developments to facilitate and speed-up data acquisition and data processing are detailed, and the first results from this new access are illustrated with recent applications to pigments, paintings, ceramics and wood

    O estabelecimento de padrões de referência altimétrica utilizando o nivelamento geométrico para a definição de alvos altos e inacessíveis

    As estruturas geodésicas altimétricas são fundamentais para os projetos de Engenharia. Neste contexto, pode-se utilizar a tecnologia do nível digital para a determinação de pontos de referência altimétrica através do método do nivelamento geométrico. Outra solução é a utilização da tecnologia da estação total para a determinação de altitudes em pontos situados em locais altos e inacessíveis nas estruturas arquitetônicas, como por exemplo, alvos em estrutura de edificação situados em torres de igrejas e para a realização de uma estrutura geodésica através do método de nivelamento trigonométrico. As estruturas geodésicas altimétricas, implantadas e determinadas pelo método do nivelamento geométrico, materializam, neste trabalho, pontos para o estabelecimento de padrões de referência altimétrica e para a determinação altimétrica de alvos altos e inacessíveis. As estruturas geodésicas foram implantadas e determinadas, no Sítio Histórico de Olinda, empregando-se nível digital de alta precisão e mira de ínvar com código de barras.     Temporal shoreline series analysis using GNSS

    In recent decades, Boa Viagem beach located in the city of Recife-PE and Piedade in Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE (Brazil) has seen urbanization near the coastline causing changes in social, economic and morphological aspects, where coastal erosion problems are observed. This study uses GNSS (global navigation satellite system) shoreline monitoring approach, which is quicker, and provides continuously updatable data at cm-level accuracy to analyze and determine temporal positional shifts of the shoreline as well as annual average rates through EPR (end point rate). To achieve this, kinematic GNSS survey data for the years 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012 were used. The results show sectorial trends over the years, with the highest annual retreat rate of 8.16 m /year occurring during the period 2007-2009. Variety of different patterns over the shoreline were also observed. These findings could be essential for decision making in coastal environments

    Monoidic Codes in Cryptography

    International audienceAt SAC 2009, Misoczki and Barreto proposed a new class of codes, which have parity-check matrices that are quasi-dyadic. A special subclass of these codes were shown to coincide with Goppa codes and those were recommended for cryptosystems based on error-correcting codes. Quasi-dyadic codes have both very compact representations and allow for efficient processing, resulting in fast cryptosystems with small key sizes. In this paper, we generalize these results and introduce quasi-monoidic codes, which retain all desirable properties of quasi-dyadic codes. We show that, as before, a subclass of our codes contains only Goppa codes or, for a slightly bigger subclass, only Generalized Srivastava codes. Unlike before, we also capture codes over fields of odd characteristic. These include wild Goppa codes that were proposed at SAC 2010 by Bernstein, Lange, and Peters for their exceptional error-correction capabilities. We show how to instantiate standard code-based encryption and signature schemes with our codes and give some preliminary parameters

    Making effective use of healthcare data using data-to-text technology

    Healthcare organizations are in a continuous effort to improve health outcomes, reduce costs and enhance patient experience of care. Data is essential to measure and help achieving these improvements in healthcare delivery. Consequently, a data influx from various clinical, financial and operational sources is now overtaking healthcare organizations and their patients. The effective use of this data, however, is a major challenge. Clearly, text is an important medium to make data accessible. Financial reports are produced to assess healthcare organizations on some key performance indicators to steer their healthcare delivery. Similarly, at a clinical level, data on patient status is conveyed by means of textual descriptions to facilitate patient review, shift handover and care transitions. Likewise, patients are informed about data on their health status and treatments via text, in the form of reports or via ehealth platforms by their doctors. Unfortunately, such text is the outcome of a highly labour-intensive process if it is done by healthcare professionals. It is also prone to incompleteness, subjectivity and hard to scale up to different domains, wider audiences and varying communication purposes. Data-to-text is a recent breakthrough technology in artificial intelligence which automatically generates natural language in the form of text or speech from data. This chapter provides a survey of data-to-text technology, with a focus on how it can be deployed in a healthcare setting. It will (1) give an up-to-date synthesis of data-to-text approaches, (2) give a categorized overview of use cases in healthcare, (3) seek to make a strong case for evaluating and implementing data-to-text in a healthcare setting, and (4) highlight recent research challenges.Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures, book chapte
