A Microscopic View on the Mott transition in Chromium-doped V2O3
V2O3 is the prototype system for the Mott transition, one of the most
fundamental phenomena of electronic correlation. Temperature, doping or
pressure induce a metal to insulator transition (MIT) between a paramagnetic
metal (PM) and a paramagnetic insulator (PI). This or related MITs have a high
technological potential, among others for intelligent windows and field effect
transistors. However the spatial scale on which such transitions develop is not
known in spite of their importance for research and applications. Here we
unveil for the first time the MIT in Cr-doped V2O3 with submicron lateral
resolution: with decreasing temperature, microscopic domains become metallic
and coexist with an insulating background. This explains why the associated PM
phase is actually a poor metal. The phase separation can be associated with a
thermodynamic instability near the transition. This instability is reduced by
pressure which drives a genuine Mott transition to an eventually homogeneous
metallic state.Comment: Paper plus supplementary materia
Immune parameters identify Italian centenarians with a longer five-year survival independent of their health and functional status.
Centenarians are rare and exceptional individuals characterized by a peculiar phenotype. They are the best ex- ample of healthy aging in humans as most of them have escaped or substantially delayed the onset of major age-related diseases. Within this scenario, the purpose of the present work was to understand if immune status is associated with survival and health status in centenarians. To this aim, 116 centenarians were concomitantly characterized for their immunological, health and functional status, and followed-up for five-year survival. On the basis of previous knowledge we focused on a core of fundamental and basic immune parameters (number of leukocytes, monocytes, total lymphocytes, CD3+ T lymphocytes, CD4+ helper T lymphocytes, CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes, CD19+ B lymphocytes and plasma levels of IgM), and the most important findings can be sum- marized as follows: i. a hierarchical cluster analysis was able to define Cluster1 (88 centenarians) and Cluster2 (28 centenarians) characterized by low and high values of all these immune parameters, respectively; ii. cente- narians of Cluster2 showed a statistically longer five-year survival and more favorable values of other important immune (naïve, activated/memory and effector/memory T cells) and metabolic (glycemia, insulin and HOMA-IR) parameters, in accord with previous observations that centenarians have a peculiar immune profile, a preserved insulin pathway and a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes; and iii. unexpectedly, parameters related to frailty, as well as functional and cognitive status, did not show any significant correlation with the immune clustering, de- spite being capable per se of predicting survival. In conclusion, high values of basic immunological parameters and important T cell subsets correlate with five-year survival in centenarians, independent of other phenotypic characteristics. This unexpected biological scenario is compatible with the general hypothesis that in centenarians a progressive disconnection and loss of biological coherence among the different functions of the body occur, where survival/mortality result from the failure of any of these domains which apparently follow an independent age-related trajectory

Search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of Higgs-like bosons.
A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV , collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 . The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2

Search for the rare decay D0→μ+μ-
A search for the rare decay D →μ μ is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9fb , of pp collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of events is consistent with the background expectations and corresponds to an upper limit of B(D0→μ+μ-)<6.2(7.6)×10-9 at 90% (95%) confidence level. This result represents an improvement of more than a factor twenty with respect to previous measurements. © 2013 CERN. 0 + - -

Search for Bc+ decays to two charm mesons
A search for decays of B c + mesons to two charm mesons is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb −1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The decays considered are B c + →D (s) (⁎)+ D‾ (⁎)0 and B c + →D (s) (⁎)+ D (⁎)0 , which are normalised to high-yield B + →D (s) + D‾ 0 decays. No evidence for a signal is found and limits are set on twelve B c + decay modes

Measurement of CP observables in the process B 0 → DK *0 with two- and four-body D decays
Measurements of observables in decays are presented,
where represents a superposition of and states. The
meson is reconstructed in the two-body final states , ,
and , and, for the first time, in the four-body final
states , and .
The analysis uses a sample of neutral mesons produced in proton-proton
collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0, 2.0 and 1.8 collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of
7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. First observations of the decays
and are
obtained. The measured observables are interpreted in terms of the
-violating weak phase

Measurements of CP asymmetries in charmless four-body Λb0 and Ξb0 decays
Abstract: A search for CP violation in charmless four-body decays of Λb0 and Ξb0 baryons with a proton and three charged mesons in the final state is performed. To cancel out production and detection charge-asymmetry effects, the search is carried out by measuring the difference between the CP asymmetries in a charmless decay and in a decay with an intermediate charmed baryon with the same particles in the final state. The data sample used was recorded in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3fb-1. A total of 18 CP asymmetries are considered, either accounting for the full phase space of the decays or exploring specific regions of the decay kinematics. No significant CP-violation effect is observed in any of the measurements

Updated measurement of time-dependent CP -violating observables in Bs0→J/ψK+K- decays
The decay-time-dependent asymmetry in
decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of , collected with the LHCb
detector at a centre-of-mass energy of in 2015 and 2016.
Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant mass in the vicinity of the resonance, the -violating
phase is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the
light and heavy mass eigenstates of the - system,
. The difference of the average and meson
decay widths, , is determined using in addition a sample of
decays. The values obtained are , and , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the
second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these
quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard
Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at
centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with
recent results from decays obtained using
the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results

Observation of the Λb0→χc1 (3872) pK− decay
Using proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector and
corresponding to 1.0, 2.0 and 1.9fb of integrated luminosity at the
centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively, the decay
with is
observed for the first time. The significance of the observed signal is in
excess of seven standard deviations. It is found that of the
decays proceed via the two-body intermediate state
. The~branching fraction with respect to that of
the decay mode, where the
~meson is reconstructed in the final state, is
measured to be: \begin{equation*}
\frac{\Lambda_b^0\to\chi_{c1}(3872)pK^-}{\Lambda_b\to\psi(2S)p K^-} \times
\frac{\mathcal{B}(\chi_{c1} \to J/\psi \pi^+\pi^-)}{\mathcal{B}(\psi(2S)\to
J/\psi \pi^+\pi^-)} = \left(5.4 \pm 1.1 \pm 0.2\right)\times 10^{-2}\,,
\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is
systematic
