    Get PDF
Several parameters of flowering stems of two cultivars of protea Leucospermum cordifolium (Knight) Fourc (Succession II and Tango) and one of protea Protea L. (Protea susannae x magnifica Susara) were studied in different commercial plantations. These included length and weight measures, nutrient concentrations of detached parts (flower heads, leaves and stems), and removal of nutrients of harvested flowers. A base for fertilization was also calculated. Harvested flowers of Susara removed more P, K and Cu than Succession II and Tango, and more Ca and Fe than Tango. Succession II showed the highest Zn removal. The P and Cu removal by the crop of Susara were significantly higher than those of both Leucospermum cultivars, while K, Ca, and Fe outputs of Susara exceeded only those of Tango. The nutrient top removals amounted to 4.55 g m-2 of N, 0.48 g m-2 of P, and 5.26 g m-2 of K. Data as a base to supply fertilizer to each cultivar are given, with N:P:K ratios of 1:0.08:0.87 for Succession II, 1:0.08:0.83 for Tango and 1:0.10:1.27 for Susara. The excess of the free radical production at has been implied has a common factor in pathogenesis of a big number of neurodegenerative processes, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and in ischemia/reperfusion induced brain damage. Valproic Acid (VPA), which traditionally has been used as an antiepileptic drug, now is proposed as a neuroprotective agent, but is not clear it’s mechanisms of action. In this paper, its effect was investigated in an acute oxidative stress model with Sprague Dawley rats, in which iron sulfate was used as injury and lipid peroxidation and carbonylated proteins were quantified at cerebral cortex, showing that it blocked formation of free radicals. Levels of MDA atcerebral cortex that received oxidative injury in the group of animals treated with VPA were 57% lower in comparison to control group, also the amount of carbonylated proteins was 65% lower in the cerebral cortex of experimental animals in contrast to control group.

Impact of Insecticides on Parasitoids of the Leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii, in Pepper in South Texas

    Get PDF
Liriomyza leafminers (Diptera: Agromyzidae) are cosmopolitan, polyphagous pests of horticultural plants and many are resistant to insecticides. Producers in South Texas rely on insecticides as the primary management tool for leafminers, and several compounds are available. The objective of this study is to address the efficacy of these compounds for controlling Liriomyza while minimizing their effects against natural enemies. Research plots were established at Texas AgriLife research center at Weslaco, Texas in fall 2007 and spring 2008 seasons, and peppers were used as a model crop. Plots were sprayed with novaluron, abamectin, spinetoram, lambda-cyhalothrin and water as treatments according to leafminer infestation; insecticide efficacy was monitored by collecting leaves and infested foliage. Plant phenology was also monitored. Novaluron was the most effective insecticide and lambda-cyhalothrin showed resurgence in leafminer density in fall 2007 and no reduction in spring 2008. Other compounds varied in efficacy. Novaluron showed the least number of parasitoids per leafminer larva and the lowest parasitoid diversity index among treatments followed by spinetoram. Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) was the sole leafminer species on peppers, and 19 parasitoid species were found associated with this leafminer. Application of these insecticides for management of leafminers with conservation of natural enemies is discussed

Filamin C variants are associated with a distinctive clinical and immunohistochemical arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic variants in the filamin C (FLNC) gene are associated with inherited cardiomyopathies including dilated cardiomyopathy with an arrhythmogenic phenotype. We evaluated FLNC variants in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) and investigated the disease mechanism at a molecular level. METHODS: 120 gene-elusive ACM patients who fulfilled diagnostic criteria for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) were screened by whole exome sequencing. Fixed cardiac tissue from FLNC variant carriers who had died suddenly was investigated by histology and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Novel or rare FLNC variants, four null and five variants of unknown significance, were identified in nine ACM probands (7.5%). In FLNC null variant carriers (including family members, n = 16) Task Force diagnostic electrocardiogram repolarization/depolarization abnormalities were uncommon (19%), echocardiography was normal in 69%, while 56% had >500 ventricular ectopics/24 h or ventricular tachycardia on Holter and 67% had late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI). Ten gene positive individuals (63%) had abnormalities on ECG or CMRI that are not included in the current diagnostic criteria for ARVC. Immunohistochemistry showed altered key protein distribution, distinctive from that observed in ARVC, predominantly in the left ventricle. CONCLUSIONS: ACM associated with FLNC variants presents with a distinctive phenotype characterized by Holter arrhythmia and LGE on CMRI with unremarkable ECG and echocardiographic findings. Clinical presentation in asymptomatic mutation carriers at risk of sudden death may include abnormalities which are currently non-diagnostic for ARVC. At the molecular level, the pathogenic mechanism related to FLNC appears different to classic forms of ARVC caused by desmosomal mutations

The porin and the permeating antibiotic: A selective diffusion barrier in gram-negative bacteria

    Get PDF
Gram-negative bacteria are responsible for a large proportion of antibiotic resistant bacterial diseases. These bacteria have a complex cell envelope that comprises an outer membrane and an inner membrane that delimit the periplasm. The outer membrane contains various protein channels, called porins, which are involved in the influx of various compounds, including several classes of antibiotics. Bacterial adaptation to reduce influx through porins is an increasing problem worldwide that contributes, together with efflux systems, to the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance. An exciting challenge is to decipher the genetic and molecular basis of membrane impermeability as a bacterial resistance mechanism. This Review outlines the bacterial response towards antibiotic stress on altered membrane permeability and discusses recent advances in molecular approaches that are improving our knowledge of the physico-chemical parameters that govern the translocation of antibiotics through porin channel
