Derivation of the blackfold effective theory
We study fluctuations and deformations of black branes over length scales
larger than the horizon radius. We prove that the Einstein equations for the
perturbed p-brane yield, as constraints, the equations of the effective
blackfold theory. We solve the Einstein equations for the perturbed geometry
and show that it remains regular on and outside the black brane horizon. This
study provides an ab initio derivation of the blackfold effective theory and
gives explicit expressions for the metrics near the new black holes and black

Black Brane Viscosity and the Gregory-Laflamme Instability
We study long wavelength perturbations of neutral black p-branes in
asymptotically flat space and show that, as anticipated in the blackfold
approach, solutions of the relativistic hydrodynamic equations for an effective
p+1-dimensional fluid yield solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations in a
derivative expansion. Going beyond the perfect fluid approximation, we compute
the effective shear and bulk viscosities of the black brane. The values we
obtain saturate generic bounds. Sound waves in the effective fluid are
unstable, and have been previously related to the Gregory-Laflamme instability
of black p-branes. By including the damping effect of the viscosity in the
unstable sound waves, we obtain a remarkably good and simple approximation to
the dispersion relation of the Gregory-Laflamme modes, whose accuracy increases
with the number of transverse dimensions. We propose an exact limiting form as

New Horizons for Black Holes and Branes
We initiate a systematic scan of the landscape of black holes in any
spacetime dimension using the recently proposed blackfold effective worldvolume
theory. We focus primarily on asymptotically flat stationary vacuum solutions,
where we uncover large classes of new black holes. These include helical black
strings and black rings, black odd-spheres, for which the horizon is a product
of a large and a small sphere, and non-uniform black cylinders. More exotic
possibilities are also outlined. The blackfold description recovers correctly
the ultraspinning Myers-Perry black holes as ellipsoidal even-ball
configurations where the velocity field approaches the speed of light at the
boundary of the ball. Helical black ring solutions provide the first instance
of asymptotically flat black holes in more than four dimensions with a single
spatial U(1) isometry. They also imply infinite rational non-uniqueness in
ultraspinning regimes, where they maximize the entropy among all stationary
single-horizon solutions. Moreover, static blackfolds are possible with the
geometry of minimal surfaces. The absence of compact embedded minimal surfaces
in Euclidean space is consistent with the uniqueness theorem of static black

Preclinical atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome and risk of cardiovascular events
Atherosclerotic disease is a chronic disorder developing insidiously throughout the life and usually progressing to an advanced stage by the time symptoms occur. In order to realize cardiovascular (CV) prevention, the detection of asymptomatic but diseased patients is crucial for an early intervention, since in these subjects there are opportunities to alter the progression of disease and the outcome (1).
However, the simply analysis of risk factors don’t permits to identify always these subjects since it doesn’t informs about the effect that risk factors (RF) had already provoked and may more provoke on the individual vasculature. Besides, the risk factors known predict can explain only the 90 percent of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and traditional algorithms for prediction of CV risk failed to predict a proportion of cardiovascular events (CVE), realizing a “risk factors prediction gap” (2). It may be explained by several reasons: the epidemiology-derived models, based on the prediction of long-term risk, may not accurately predict short-term events, they don’t take into consideration emerging and novel risk factors; risk algorithms don’t identify, among patients with neither a previous history of CVD nor an high risk for atherosclerotic disease, those who will develop acute myocardial infarction and/or sudden coronary death as first CVD manifestation, and this may be due to the fact that the factors responsible of plaque formation and growth are not necessarily the same responsible of its instability and rupture, being the latter related to inflammation, thrombosis and plaque morphology (3).So, a possible approach to evaluate the individual global cardiovascular risk with more accurateness is to identify risk factors combination that more easily produces vascular damage, or alternatively, to evaluate directly the arterial wall and its damage degree. The former approach is performed by the evaluation of metabolic syndrome, the latter by the non-invasive study of pre-ATS markers
The effect of agitation speed, enzyme loading and substrate concentration on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose from brewer’s spent grain
Brewer’s spent grain components (cellulose,
hemicellulose and lignin) were fractionated in a
two-step chemical pretreatment process using dilute
sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions. The
cellulose pulp produced was hydrolyzed with a
cellulolytic complex, Celluclast 1.5 L, at 45 ºC to
convert the cellulose into glucose. Several conditions
were examined: agitation speed (100, 150 and
200 rpm), enzyme loading (5, 25 and 45 FPU/g
substrate), and substrate concentration (2, 5 and 8%
w/v), according to a 2 3 full factorial design aiming to
maximize the glucose yield. The obtained results
were interpreted by analysis of variance and response
surface methodology. The optimal conditions for
enzymatic hydrolysis of brewer’s spent grain were
identified as 100 rpm, 45 FPU/g and 2% w/v substrate.
Under these conditions, a glucose yield of
93.1% and a cellulose conversion (into glucose and
cellobiose) of 99.4% was achieved. The easiness of
glucose release from BSG makes this substrate a raw material with great potential to be used in bioconversion

Cognitive reserve in granulin-related frontotemporal dementia: from preclinical to clinical stages
OBJECTIVE
Consistent with the cognitive reserve hypothesis, higher education and occupation attainments may help persons with neurodegenerative dementias to better withstand neuropathology before developing cognitive impairment. We tested here the cognitive reserve hypothesis in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), with or without pathogenetic granulin mutations (GRN+ and GRN-), and in presymptomatic GRN mutation carriers (aGRN+).
METHODS
Education and occupation attainments were assessed and combined to define Reserve Index (RI) in 32 FTD patients, i.e. 12 GRN+ and 20 GRN-, and in 17 aGRN+. Changes in functional connectivity were estimated by resting state fMRI, focusing on the salience network (SN), executive network (EN) and bilateral frontoparietal networks (FPNs). Cognitive status was measured by FTD-modified Clinical Dementia Rating Scale.
RESULTS
In FTD patients higher level of premorbid cognitive reserve was associated with reduced connectivity within the SN and the EN. EN was more involved in FTD patients without GRN mutations, while SN was more affected in GRN pathology. In aGRN+, cognitive reserve was associated with reduced SN.
CONCLUSIONS
This study suggests that cognitive reserve modulates functional connectivity in patients with FTD, even in monogenic disease. In GRN inherited FTD, cognitive reserve mechanisms operate even in presymptomatic to clinical stages
Rapidly rotating second-generation progenitors for the blue hook stars of {\omega} Cen
Horizontal Branch stars belong to an advanced stage in the evolution of the
oldest stellar galactic population, occurring either as field halo stars or
grouped in globular clusters. The discovery of multiple populations in these
clusters, that were previously believed to have single populations gave rise to
the currently accepted theory that the hottest horizontal branch members (the
blue hook stars, which had late helium-core flash ignition, followed by deep
mixing) are the progeny of a helium-rich "second generation" of stars. It is
not known why such a supposedly rare event (a late flash followed by mixing) is
so common that the blue hook of {\omega} Cen contains \sim 30% of horizontal
branch stars 10 , or why the blue hook luminosity range in this massive cluster
cannot be reproduced by models. Here we report that the presence of helium core
masses up to \sim 0.04 solar masses larger than the core mass resulting from
evolution is required to solve the luminosity range problem. We model this by
taking into account the dispersion in rotation rates achieved by the
progenitors, whose premain sequence accretion disc suffered an early disruption
in the dense environment of the cluster's central regions where
second-generation stars form. Rotation may also account for frequent

Sibling relationships and family functioning in siblings of early adolescents, adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder
The purpose of the study was to investigate how family functioning (defined as the ability that family members hold to manage stressful events, and intimate and social relationships), the degree to which family members feel happy and fulfilled with each other (called family satisfaction), and the demographical characteristics of siblings (age and gender) impacted on sibling relationships. The Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems and Behavioral Systems constituted the theoretical frameworks that guided our study. Eighty-six typically developing adolescents and young adults having a sister or a brother with autism spectrum disorder were enrolled. Results indicated that the youngest age group (early adolescents) reported to engage more frequently in negative behaviors with their siblings with ASD than the two older age groups (middle adolescents and young adults). No significant differences were found among the three age groups regarding behaviors derived from attachment, caregiving and affiliative systems. Family satisfaction and age significantly predicted behaviors during sibling interactions. Suggestions on prevention and intervention programs were discussed in order to prevent parentification among typically developing
siblings and decrease episodes of quarrels and overt conflicts between brothers and sisters with and without AS
Freight distribution performance indicators for service quality planning in large transportation networks
This paper studies the use of performance indicators in routing problems to estimate how transportation cost is affected by the quality of service offered. The quality of service is assumed to be directly dependent on the size of the time windows. Smaller time windows mean better service. Three performance indicators are introduced. These indicators are calculated directly from the data without the need of a solution method. The introduced indicators are based mainly on a "request compatibility", which describes whether two visits can be scheduled consecutively in a route. Other two indicators are introduced, which get their values from a greedy constructive heuristic. After introducing the indicators, the correlation between indicators and transportation cost is examined. It is concluded that the indicators give a good first estimation on the transportation cost incurred when providing a certain quality of service. These indicators can be calculated easily in one of the first planning steps without the need of a sophisticated solution tool. The contribution of the paper is the introduction of a simple set of performance indicators that can be used to estimate the transportation cost of a routing problem with time window
