Physical fitness components associated with performance in a multiple-sprint test.
PURPOSE: The 5-m repeat-sprint test (5-m RST) measures resistance to fatigue after repeated bouts of short-duration, high-intensity activity. This study determined the components of fitness associated with performance in 5-m RSTs. METHODS: Speed (10-m and 40-m sprints), strength (bench press), agility, strength endurance (pull-ups and push-ups), and aerobic power (20-m shuttle-run test) were measured in male provincial- or national-level rugby (n = 110), hockey (n = 59), and soccer (n = 55) players. RESULTS: Subjects with either high (HI) or low (LO) resistance to fatigue in the 5-m RST differed in body mass (76.9 +/- 11.6 kg vs 102.1 +/- 18.9 kg, HI vs LO, respectively, P < .001), agility (14.55 +/- 0.41 seconds vs 15.56 +/- 0.30 seconds, P < .001), bench press (86 +/- 20 kg vs 114 +/- 33 kg, P = .03), pull-ups (13 +/- 4 vs 8 +/- 5, P = .02), push-ups (56 +/- 12 vs 39 +/- 13, P = .002), and 20-m shuttle-run test (20-m SRT; 133 +/- 11 vs 87 +/- 12 shuttles, P < .001). Body mass, strength, and aerobic power were the best predictors of 5-m RST performance: 5-m RST = -1.274(mass) + 0.756(1RM bench press) + 2.053(number of 20-m SRT shuttles) + 549.409 (R2 = .66). CONCLUSIONS: Performance in the 5-m RST is predicted best by a combination of factors including body mass, strength, and aerobic ability, rather than by any single component of fitness
Ethical implications of the use of whole genome methods in medical research
The use of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in medical research and the increased ability to share data give a new twist to some of the perennial ethical issues associated with genomic research. GWAS create particular challenges because they produce fine, detailed, genotype information at high resolution, and the results of more focused studies can potentially be used to determine genetic variation for a wide range of conditions and traits. The information from a GWA scan is derived from DNA that is a powerful personal identifier, and can provide information not just on the individual, but also on the individual's relatives, related groups, and populations. Furthermore, it creates large amounts of individual-specific digital information that is easy to share across international borders. This paper provides an overview of some of the key ethical issues around GWAS: consent, feedback of results, privacy, and the governance of research. Many of the questions that lie ahead of us in terms of the next generation sequencing methods will have been foreshadowed by GWAS and the debates around ethical and policy issues that these have created
Attentional and visual demands for sprint performance in non-fatigued and fatigued conditions: reliability of a repeated sprint test
Background: Physical performance measures are widely used to assess physical function, providing information about physiological and biomechanical aspects of motor performance. However they do not provide insight into the attentional and visual demands for motor performance. A figure-of-eight sprint test was therefore developed to measure the attentional and visual demands for repeated-sprint performance. The aims of the study were: 1) to assess test-retest reliability of the figure-of-eight sprint test, and 2) to study the attentional and visual demands for sprint performance in a non-fatigued and fatigued condition. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy athletes were included in the study. To determine test-retest reliability, a subgroup of 19 athletes performed the figure-of-eight sprint test twice. The figure-of-eight sprint test consisted of nine 30-second sprints. The sprint test consisted of three test parts: sprinting without any restriction, with an attention-demanding task, and with restricted vision. Increases in sprint times with the attention-demanding task or restricted vision are reflective of the attentional and visual demands for sprinting. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and mean difference between test and retest with 95% confidence limits (CL) were used to assess test-retest reliability. Repeated-measures ANOVA were used for comparisons between the sprint times and fatigue measurements of the test parts in both a non-fatigued and fatigued condition. Results: The figure-of-eight sprint test showed good test-retest reliability, with ICCs ranging from 0.75 to 0.94 (95% CL: 0.40-0.98). Zero lay within the 95% CL of the mean differences, indicating that no bias existed between sprint performance at test and retest. Sprint times during the test parts with attention-demanding task (P = 0.01) and restricted vision (P < 0.001) increased significantly compared to the base measurement. Furthermore the sprint times and fatigue measurements increased significantly in fatigued condition. There was a significant interaction effect between test part and level of fatigue (P = 0.03). Conclusions: High ICCs and the absence of systematic variation indicate good test-retest reliability of the figure-of-eight sprint test. The attentional and visual demands for sprint performance, in both a non-fatigued and fatigued condition, can be measured in healthy team-sport athletes with the figure-of-eight sprint test
Reliability of a 5 Ă— 6-s maximal cycling repeated-sprint test in trained female team-sport athletes
The present study examined the reliability
of work and power measures during a 5 · 6-s cycle
ergometer test of repeated-sprint ability. Nine, welltrained,
female soccer players performed five, 5 · 6-s
repeated-sprint tests on a front-access cycle ergometer
on separate days. Sprints were separated by 24 s of
active recovery. Absolute measures of total work done
(Wtot), total peak power (PPtot), work done during
sprint 1 (W1) and peak power output during sprint 1
(PP1) were recorded. Decrement scores in work done
(Wdec) and peak power output (PPdec), and fatigue
indices for work done (FIW) and peak power (FIP),
were calculated. Significant improvements in all of the
work and power measures were observed between trial
1 and subsequent trials (P < 0.05), but no significant
differences were identified between trials 2, 3, 4 and 5.
The same was true for increases in the decrement
scores. The coefficient of variation (CV) was established
to reflect within-subject reproducibility for each
variable. The CV was significantly improved by the
third trial for work done (Wtot CV: trials 1–2 = 5.5%;
trials 3–4 = 2.8%), peak power (PPtot CV: trials 1–
2 = 5.1%; trials 3–4 = 2.7%) and performance decrement
scores (P < 0.05). The standard error of measurement
(SEM) and intraclass correlation coefficient
(ICC) were also calculated for each variable and expressed
within 95% confidence intervals. It was concluded
that two familiarisation trials are optimal for
collecting reliable data from a 5 · 6-s repeated-sprint
cycling test. Furthermore, due to the large variation
around performance decrement it was suggested that
decrement scores ought to be interpreted with caution
