    Digital mentoring of young people for responsible citizenship: a case study of an organisation using Twitter

    This research aims to assess qualitatively a social media strategy employed by a UK-based civil society organisation to mobilise young people to political actions, in particular, voting. Conceptualising democracy as full participation in a decision-making process by members of a society, the project chose the organisation, Bite the Ballot (BtB), which aims to encourage young people to vote. While this research focuses on BtB’s Twitter strategy, it is also concerned with how followers learn the importance of voting through their interaction with BtB. To achieve this, an analytical framework was employed to analyse interactions on Twitter. To triangulate the tweet analysis, the research collected two additional data sources: interviews with key informants and document analysis of BtB’s output including its website. In addition, network analysis was used to contextualise BtB’s strategy within the wider network of youth-led organisations which legitimises the selection of the case for this study. The research revealed some evidence that BtB has employed an effective approach in developing democratic skills for responsible citizenship among young people on Twitter. As the BtB strategy appears to be based on young people’s preference fora horizontal relationship rather than a hierarchical relationship, BtB has adopted a mentoring approach to encourage them to vote after discussion on Twitter. Furthermore, I also found that BtB has developed an unthreatening online environment on Twitter where young people can freely explore and discuss issues with their peers, while BtB acts as their mentor. The analysis of tweets underlines BtB’s approach by suggesting that it allows young people potentially to practise their democratic skills on the BtB Twitter account by posting relevant comments to a discussion topic. Drawing on the above, I conclude that BtB’s strategy constitutes a promising pedagogic approach in guiding young people to develop their democratic skills through interaction on Twitter

    We investigate supersymmetry in one-dimensional quantum mechanics with point interactions. We clarify a class of point interactions compatible with supersymmetry and present N=2 supersymmetric models on a circle with two point interactions as well as a superpotential. A hidden su(2) structure inherent in the system plays a crucial role to construct the N=2 supercharges.     Prominent IgM Deposition in Glomerulus Is Associated with Severe Proteinuria and Reduced after Combined Treatment of Tonsillectomy with Steroid Pulse Therapy in Patients with IgA Nephropathy

    IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is characterized by mesangial deposition of IgA, C3, and often IgM. We examined the relationship among IgM deposition, clinical features, and renal outcome in IgAN patients who underwent combined treatment of tonsillectomy with steroid pulse therapy (Tx-SP). We retrospectively reviewed 73 IgAN patients treated with Tx-SP from March 2006 to March 2014. The patients were divided into those with moderate (2+) to severe (3+) mesangial IgM deposition (Prominent IgM-positive patients, P-Group) and those with negative (−) to faint (1+) deposition (the “Other” patients, O-Group). Using propensity scores to minimize confounding factors, 11 propensity score-matched patients with O-Group (mO-Group) were compared to 11 P-Group patients. The study outcome was defined as urinary protein grade by urine test strip before Tx-SP and one year after Tx-SP. P-Group patients exhibited an increased severity of proteinuria compared to O-Group (p=0.018) and mO-Group patients (p=0.009) before Tx-SP. After Tx-SP, proteinuria was significantly ameliorated in the P-Group, reaching the same severity recorded in the O-Group (p=0.007) and mO-Group (p=0.021). No significant differences were noted between P-Group and mO-Group in microhematuria, serum creatinine level, and histological severity. Prominent IgM deposition is associated with severe proteinuria in IgAN. However, Tx-SP induces a sufficient reduction in the severity of proteinuria in IgM-positive IgAN

    Development of D-to-D-to-P telemedicine at a remote island hospital using smart glasses

    Background: Medical resources on remote islands are limited, which makes it difficult for patients to receive specialized medical care.Purpose: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a method to perform doctor-to-doctor-to-patient (D-to-D-to-P) telemedicine.Methods: The-D-to-D-to-P telemedicine was implemented to provide specialized medical support from a neurologist at Nagasaki University Hospital to a rural physician wearing camera-equipped smart glasses at Goto Chuoh Hospital on a remote island, which was called a virtual neurological outpatient (VNO). For the first six months, the rural physician independently saw patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), and then for the next six months, VNO was implemented. Comparisons were made before and after the implementation of the VNO. Next, by adding a 4 K overhead camera, in-person examinations of a single outpatient were compared between the rural physician with VNO and another neurologist unrelated to the VNO.Results: The clinical efficacy of VNO was not superior to no VNO, but had a learning effect on rural physicians and was satisfactory for patients. By adding a 4 K overhead camera to the VNO, the accuracy of the in-person examination by the rural physician was shown to be equivalent to that of an in-person neurologist.Conclusion: VNO using smart glasses could be applied for D-to-D-to-P telemedicine in neurology. However, to promote telemedicine on remote islands, it will be necessary to improve the system to make it more accessible to rural physicians

    MEF/ELF4 transactivation by E2F1 is inhibited by p53

    Myeloid elf-1-like factor (MEF) or Elf4 is an E-twenty-six (ETS)-related transcription factor with strong transcriptional activity that influences cellular senescence by affecting tumor suppressor p53. MEF downregulates p53 expression and inhibits p53-mediated cellular senescence by transcriptionally activating MDM2. However, whether p53 reciprocally opposes MEF remains unex-plored. Here, we show that MEF is modulated by p53 in human cells and mice tissues. MEF expression and promoter activity were suppressed by p53. While we found that MEF promoter does not contain p53 response elements, intriguingly, it contains E2F consensus sites. Subsequently, we determined that E2F1 specifically binds to MEF promoter and transactivates MEF. Nevertheless, E2F1 DNA binding and transactivation of MEF promoter was inhibited by p53 through the association between p53 and E2F1. Furthermore, we showed that activation of p53 in doxorubicin-induced senescent cells increased E2F1 and p53 interaction, diminished E2F1 recruitment to MEF promoter and reduced MEF expression. These observations suggest that p53 downregulates MEF by associating with and inhibiting the binding activity of E2F1, a novel transcriptional activator of MEF. Together with previous findings, our present results indicate that a negative regulatory mechanism exists between p53 and MEF

    Identification of the sex-determining factor in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha reveals unique evolution of sex chromosomes in a haploid system

Rules that govern the evolution of sex chromosomes via specialization and degeneration following the evolution of a sex determinant have been well studied in diploid organisms. However, distinct predictions apply to sex chromosomes in organisms where sex is determined in the haploid phase of the life cycle: both sex chromosomes, female U and male V, are expected to maintain their gene functions, even though both are non-recombining. This is in contrast to the X-Y (or Z-W) asymmetry and Y (W) chromosome degeneration in XY (ZW) systems of diploids. Here, we provide evidence that sex chromosomes diverged early during the evolution of haploid liverworts and identify the sex determinant on the Marchantia polymorpha U chromosome. This gene, Feminizer, encodes a member of the plant-specific BASIC PENTACYSTEINE transcription factor family. It triggers female differentiation via regulation of the autosomal sex-determining locus of FEMALE GAMETOPHYTE MYB and SUPPRESSOR OF FEMINIZATION. Phylogenetic analyses of Feminizer and other sex chromosome genes indicate dimorphic sex chromosomes had already been established 430 mya in the ancestral liverwort. Feminizer also plays a role in reproductive induction that is shared with its gametolog on the V chromosome, suggesting an ancestral function, distinct from sex determination, was retained by the gametologs. This implies ancestral functions can be preserved after the acquisition of a sex determination mechanism during the evolution of a dominant haploid sex chromosome system

    The First Very Long Baseline Interferometry Image of 44 GHz Methanol Maser with the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA)

    We have carried out the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging of 44 GHz class I methanol maser (7_{0}-6_{1}A^{+}) associated with a millimeter core MM2 in a massive star-forming region IRAS 18151-1208 with KaVA (KVN and VERA Array), which is a newly combined array of KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We have succeeded in imaging compact maser features with a synthesized beam size of 2.7 milliarcseconds x 1.5 milliarcseconds (mas). These features are detected at a limited number of baselines within the length of shorter than approximately 650 km corresponding to 100 Mlambda in the uv-coverage. The central velocity and the velocity width of the 44 GHz methanol maser are consistent with those of the quiescent gas rather than the outflow traced by the SiO thermal line. The minimum component size among the maser features is ~ 5 mas x 2 mas, which corresponds to the linear size of ~ 15 AU x 6 AU assuming a distance of 3 kpc. The brightness temperatures of these features range from ~ 3.5 x 10^{8} to 1.0 x 10^{10} K, which are higher than estimated lower limit from a previous Very Large Array observation with the highest spatial resolution of ~ 50 mas. The 44 GHz class I methanol maser in IRAS 18151-1208 is found to be associated with the MM2 core, which is thought to be less evolved than another millimeter core MM1 associated with the 6.7 GHz class II methanol maser.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure

    Astrometry of H2_{2}O Masers in Nearby Star-Forming Regions with VERA. III. IRAS 22198+6336 in L1204G

    We present results of multi-epoch VLBI observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) of the 22 GHz H2_{2}O masers associated with a young stellar object (YSO) IRAS 22198+6336 in a dark cloud L1204G. Based on the phase-referencing VLBI astrometry, we derive an annual parallax of IRAS 22198+6336 to be 1.309±\pm0.047 mas, corresponding to the distance of 764±\pm27 pc from the Sun. Although the most principal error source of our astrometry is attributed to the internal structure of the maser spots, we successfully reduce the errors in the derived annual parallax by employing the position measurements for all of the 26 detected maser spots. Based on this result, we reanalyze the spectral energy distribution (SED) of IRAS 22198+6336 and find that the bolometric luminosity and total mass of IRAS 22198+6336 are 450LL_{\odot} and 7MM_{\odot}, respectively. These values are consistent with an intermediate-mass YSO deeply embedded in the dense dust core, which has been proposed to be an intermediate-mass counterpart of a low-mass Class 0 source. In addition, we obtain absolute proper motions of the H2_{2}O masers for the most blue-shifted components. We propose that the collimated jets aligned along the east-west direction are the most plausible explanation for the origin of the detected maser features.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (Vol.60, No.5, October 25, VERA special issue
