Preparation of ZnO Films by Activated Reactive Evaporation Method

    Get PDF
Zinc oxide films were prepared on silica glass substrates by the use of an r.f. activated reactive evaporation (ARE) method, and were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron micrograph (SEM). XRD measurements indicate that the films were c-axis oriented and that an r.f. plasma of Zn and O was necessary for the ZnO film deposition. Substrate temperature, oxygen gas pressure, evaporation rate, r.f. power and inlet position of oxygen gas effect the c-axis orientation, the growth rate and the microstructure of the films. Optimum conditions for a dense film with a fine texture of the surface and having good crystallinity were as follows: the substrate temperature;400℃, the evaporation rate;5.0(A)/s, the oxygen pressure;2.0x10(-4) Torr, the r.f. power;150 to 200W, and the oxygen gas inlet near the substrate. For the film prepared under the optimum conditions, the standard deviation σ of the rocking curve for the (002) diffraction was 1.9deg, smaller than that of the film prepared by using an r.f. sputtering method

An optical transition-edge sensor with high energy resolution

Optical transition-edge sensors have shown energy resolution for resolving the number of incident photons at the telecommunication wavelength. Higher energy resolution is required for biological imaging and microscope spectroscopy. In this paper, we report on a Au/Ti (10/20 nm) bilayer TES that showed high energy resolution. This was achieved by lowering the critical temperature Tc to 115 mK and the resultant energy resolution was 67 meV full width at half maximum (FWHM) at 0.8 eV. When Tc was lowered to 115 mK, the theoretical resolution would scaled up to 30 meV FWHM, considering that the typical energy resolution of optical TESs is 150 meV and Tc is 300 mK. To investigate the gap between the theoretical expectation (30 meV) and the measured value (67 meV), we measured its complex impedance and current noise. We found excess Johnson noise in the TES and an excess Johnson term M was 1.5 at a bias point where the resistance was 10% of normal resistance. For reference, the TES was compared with a TES showing typical energy resolution (156 meV FWHM). We will discuss what improved the energy resolution and what might have been the limiting factor on it

Changes in Esophageal Blood Flow by Esophageal Transection with Devascularization

    Get PDF
Changes in the blood flow in the wall of the esophagus were experimentally measured with the use of the hydrogen clearance method to evaluate the influence of operative procedure by transectional esophago-esophagostomy with paraesophageal and perigastric devascularization in the treatment of esophageal varices. As a result of this study, an approximately 30% reduction in blood flow of the adventitia was confirmed according to the procedure of paraesophageal devascularization. When performing a further procedure of esophageal transection, total blood flow was reduced to 50%. It is logical to conclude that the marked decrease in blood flow in the wall of the esophagus offers a great opportunity for the development of postoperative anastomosis insufficiency. It is of interest to note that the incidence of postoperative complications in the performance of this operation for esophageal varices has become significant on the basis of blood flow changes in the wall of the esophagus

On the Magnetic Susceptibilities of Troponoid-System. I : Diamagnetism of Hinokitiol (β-Thujaplicin) and α-Thujaplicin

The diamagnetic susceptibilities of hinokitiol ((β-thujaplicin) and α-thujaplicin in powdered crystal form have been measured and the structures of the tropolone-ring are discussed. The observed molar susceptibilities obtained in the present experiments are -(102±1)×10 for hinokitiol, -(100±3)×10 for α-thujaplicin (colourless, m. p. 34°), and -(97±2)×10 for α-thujaplicin (light yellow, m. p. 24°). These observed data have been compared with calculated values, which were computed by use of the four methods ; the Pascal\u27s additive law, the Slater-Angus method, Langevin\u27s formula referring to the diamagnetism for the planar orbit, and the theory of diamagnetic anisotropy of molecular orbitals (London\u27s method), with the result that there are six π-electrons, within each tropolone-ring of these compounds, which are able to revolve along the closed circuit constructed out of the periphery of seven membered ring. As a necessary consequence of this condition, it follows the ionization between one of the carbon atoms in the ring system and the oxygen atom in the carbonyl group, assuming the former a positive charge and the later a negative one

Surgical Treatment for Carcinoma of the Esophagus Involving the Trachea, Bronchus and Lung in Terms of its Prognosis and Pathological Study

Key word: Carcinoma of the esophagus, A3 involving the trachea, bronchus, lung, pathology, prognosis. A total of 10 patients with carcinoma of the esophagus involving the trachea, bronchus and lung were operated upon. Their clinical features and histological patterns of cancer invasion were evaluated. In 5 patients involving the lung, the preoperative irradiation therapy was histologically effective in encircling the cancer lesions by induced scar formation. It was possible to render the resection to enhance its radicality. In 5 patients involving the trachea or the bronchus, it has become apparent that the membranous portion is more susceptible to cancer invasion and the structures of the cartilages on the tracheal and bronchial walls have a strong resistance to cancerous spread. The extent of cancer invasion on the trachea or bronchus was considerably limited. The sharp dissection at the site of occurrence of cancer invasion as an operative procedure of choice is sometimes beneficial in attempt to enhance the operative radicality when cancer invasion reaches to the adventitial layer. The prognosis, however, was not improved by an extended resection. It seems to be closely related to n-factor. None of them survived exceeding one year after surgery

Skip Metastases Extending to the Esophagus in Carcinoma of the Cardia

    Get PDF
Eight cases with skip metastases to the esophagus in carcinoma of the cardia were pathologically analyzed in the genesis. These lesions were characterized by 1) deeply invaded carcinoma outside the gastric wall in carcinoma of the cardia 2) extended cancer spreading across the esophagocardiac junction 3) much more prominent histologic vascular invasion (ly) on the basis of histologic findings. We allege from this study that wide resection of the esophagus is necessary for the treatment of carcinoma of the cardia in which cancer in the cardia extends outside the gastric wall and spreads across the esophagocardiac junction

Causative Mechanism of Reflux Esophagitis induced by Digestive Secretions

    Get PDF
Mechanisms producing reflux esophagitis were experimentally evaluated to clarify a direct action of digestive secretions to the esophageal mucosa. Mucosal lesions of reflux esophagitis were grossly composed of erosion, ulceration and loss of normal lustrous appearance. Based on histological examination, the degrees of erosion, ulceration and cell infiltraiton were also compared with respect to the severity of reflux esophagitis. Causative mechanisms of reflux esophagitis due to gastric juice alone are different from those due to another digestive secretions in relation to either the gastrectomized status or not

Ileocecal actinomycosis : A case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF
A case of actinomycosis in the ileocecal area of a 44-years-old man which manifested as a painful lump in the right iliac fossa is reported. Clinical and laboratory findings suggested the diagnosis of perityphlitic abscess due to acute appendicitis. Upon a laparotomy, a malignant tumor was suspected and so a right hemicolectomy was performed. Gram staining of cecum tissues demonstrated gram positive pleomorphic filaments. Postoperative penicillin therapy was successful. Despite the fact that infection accompanying an actinomycotic organism is relatively rare, the possibility of such an infection should be kept in mind because the organism is known to be commensal in the oral cavity, lungs and intestinal tract
