The impact of college student immersion service learning trips on coping with stress and vocational identity
This study examined the impact of service learning immersion trips on vocational identity and coping with stress among college students. Fifty-one students (15 males, 36 females) who participated in immersion trips and 76 students (25 males, 51 females) in a non-immersion control group completed a series of questionnaires directly before and immediately after both fall and spring break immersion trips, and during a four-month follow up. Results suggest that, after returning from an immersion trip, students report a greater ability to cope with stress and a somewhat stronger sense of vocational identity relative to students who do not participate in immersion trips
An investigation into the effect of thickness of titanium dioxide and gold-silver nanoparticle titanium dioxide composite thin-films on photocatalytic activity and photo-induced oxygen production in a sacrificial system
Thin films of titanium dioxide and titanium dioxide with incorporated gold and silver nanoparticles were deposited onto glass microscope slides, steel and titanium foil coupons by two solâgel dip-coating methods. The film's photocatalytic activity and ability to evolve oxygen in a sacrificial solution were assessed. It was found that photocatalytic activity increased with film thickness (from 50 to 500 nm thick samples) for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in solution and resazurin redox dye in an intelligent ink dye deposited on the surface. Contrastingly, an optimum film thickness of [similar]200 nm for both composite and pure films of titanium dioxide was found for water oxidation, using persulfate (S2O82â) as a sacrificial electron acceptor. The nanoparticle composite films showed significantly higher activity in oxygen evolution studies compared with plain TiO2 films

Macrospin Models of Spin Transfer Dynamics
The current-induced magnetization dynamics of a spin valve are studied using
a macrospin (single domain) approximation and numerical solutions of a
generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. For the purpose of quantitative
comparison with experiment [Kiselev {\it et al.} Nature {\bf 425}, 380 (2003)],
we calculate the resistance and microwave power as a function of current and
external field including the effects of anisotropies, damping, spin-transfer
torque, thermal fluctuations, spin-pumping, and incomplete absorption of
transverse spin current. While many features of experiment appear in the
simulations, there are two significant discrepancies: the current dependence of
the precession frequency and the presence/absence of a microwave quiet magnetic
phase with a distinct magnetoresistance signature. Comparison is made with

Fluorescent carbon dioxide indicators
Over the last decade, fluorescence has become the dominant tool in biotechnology and medical imaging. These exciting advances have been underpinned by the advances in time-resolved techniques and instrumentation, probe design, chemical / biochemical sensing, coupled with our furthered knowledge in biology. Complementary volumes 9 and 10, Advanced Concepts of Fluorescence Sensing: Small Molecule Sensing and Advanced Concepts of Fluorescence Sensing: Macromolecular Sensing, aim to summarize the current state of the art in fluorescent sensing. For this reason, Drs. Geddes and Lakowicz have invited chapters, encompassing a broad range of fluorescence sensing techniques. Some chapters deal with small molecule sensors, such as for anions, cations, and CO2, while others summarize recent advances in protein-based and macromolecular sensors. The Editors have, however, not included DNA or RNA based sensing in this volume, as this were reviewed in Volume 7 and is to be the subject of a more detailed volume in the near future
Enumeration of quarter-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices of odd order
It was shown by Kuperberg that the partition function of the square-ice model
related to the quarter-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices of even order
is the product of two similar factors. We propose a square-ice model whose
states are in bijection with the quarter-turn symmetric alternating-sign
matrices of odd order, and show that the partition function of this model can
be also written in a similar way. This allows to prove, in particular, the
conjectures by Robbins related to the enumeration of the quarter-turn symmetric
