Railway Systems and the 'Universal Good of the State': Technologies of Government in the 19th-Century Papal State
Informed by Foucault’s concept of governmentality, the paper focuses on nineteenth-century General Commissariat for the Railroad Industry in the Papal State. Unlike in liberal States, where government intervention in the affairs of railway companies was limited, the pressing need to reinforce the Pope’s pastoral power, strengthen the bond between the believers and the Holy See and ensure equity and the efficiency of the new infrastructure meant that the Commissariat acted as a governmental centre of calculation. Accounting technologies in the form of budgets, cost accounting systems and penetrating audits enabled the government to intervene in the operations of private railway companies. The study analyses the role of accounting and auditing practices in the pursuit of non-liberal goals in an industry which is traditionally perceived as critical to the development of a liberal economy, one in which accounting was traditionally used to maintain investors’ confidence in the capitalist system
Microsatellite instability in thyroid tumours and tumour-like lesions
Fifty-one thyroid tumours and tumour-like lesions were analysed for instability at ten dinucleotide microsatellite loci and at two coding mononucleotide repeats within the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) type II receptor (TβRII) and insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) receptor (IGFIIR) genes respectively. Microsatellite instability (MI) was detected in 11 out of 51 cases (21.5%), including six (11.7%) with MI at one or two loci and five (9.8%) with Ml at three or more loci (RER+ phenotype). No mutations in the TβRII and IGFIIR repeats were observed. The overall frequency of MI did not significantly vary in relation to age, gender, benign versus malignant status and tumour size. However, widespread MI was significantly more frequent in follicular adenomas and carcinomas than in papillary and Hürthle cell tumours: three out of nine tumours of follicular type (33.3%) resulted in replication error positive (RER+), versus 1 out of 29 papillary carcinomas (3.4%, P = 0.01), and zero out of eight Hürthle cell neoplasms. Regional lymph node metastases were present in five MI-negative primary cancers and resulted in MI-positive in two cases. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

Multi-proxy analysis in defining sedimentary processes in very recent prodelta deposits: the Northern Phlegraean offshoreexample (Eastern Tyrrhenian Margin)
A multi-proxy analysis of Volturno River
prodelta deposits in the outer shelf of Northern Phlegraean
margin (Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea) has been carried out to
reconstruct the sedimentary processes acting during recent
times. The late Holocene sediments were characterized
through Subbottom Chirp profiles coupled with sedimentological and petrophysical data. The chronostratigraphic framework was achieved by means of colorimetric parameter a* correlations with nearby dated marine sediment. A time interpretation of about 2,300 years BP is estimated for the sedimentary record collected in the
cores. Seismic stratigraphic analysis shows late Holocene
outer shelf deposits, characterized by fluid escape features
and small-offset faults. However, the undisturbed sedimentation and the preservation of an internal geometry at decimetre scale, as detected by the sedimentological and
petrophysical analysis, indicates a slow sliding without
sediment reworking for this sedimentological body. So far
a possible recent (\2,300 years BP) shear dominated
downward displacement of high water content sediments,
triggered by the occurrence of seismic activity, is inferred. Based on the depth-age conversion of the detected lithological features, a regular climatically driven change in the sediment supply of the prodelta depositional environment is suggested. The detection of spectrophotometry
correlations of Holocene shelf margin sediments, several
km apart, goes beyond the previous work and confirms
even for continental shelf area the potential value of
spectrophotometer data in high-resolution stratigraphic
correlations
