    A century of trends in adult human height

    Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5-22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3-19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8-144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries

    O objetivo deste texto é discutir o trabalho como uma categoria de análise na educação do deficiente visual. Sob esse aspecto, evidencia que a compreensão das formas de trabalho, em cada momento da existência humana, revela a organização social e a própria história da humanidade. Para tanto, baseando-se no conceito de trabalho em Marx, houve a preocupação de revisitar a trajetória da educação especial, situando a organização dos modos de produção da sociedade e a educação do deficiente visual. Assinala que as alternativas para superar dificuldades de emprego e da possibilidade de inclusão social das pessoas com deficiência visual exigem investimento em sua educação, na qualidade de vida e na sua inserção no trabalho. Conclui-se que é de fundamental importância a existência de uma proposta educacional que supere a exclusão e a necessidade de transformação das atuais relações de trabalho na sociedade capitalista, bem como o estabelecimento de um novo projeto político-social

    Evaluation of cloud and water vapor simulations in CMIP5 climate models Using NASA "A-Train" satellite observations

    International audience[1] Using NASA's A-Train satellite measurements, we evaluate the accuracy of cloud water content (CWC) and water vapor mixing ratio (H2O) outputs from 19 climate models submitted to the Phase 5 of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), and assess improvements relative to their counterparts for the earlier CMIP3. We find more than half of the models show improvements from CMIP3 to CMIP5 in simulating column-integrated cloud amount, while changes in water vapor simulation are insignificant. For the 19 CMIP5 models, the model spreads and their differences from the observations are larger in the upper troposphere (UT) than in the lower or middle troposphere (L/MT). The modeled mean CWCs over tropical oceans range from ~3% to ~15× of the observations in the UT and 40% to 2× of the observations in the L/MT. For modeled H2Os, the mean values over tropical oceans range from ~1% to 2× of the observations in the UT and within 10% of the observations in the L/MT. The spatial distributions of clouds at 215 hPa are relatively well-correlated with observations, noticeably better than those for the L/MT clouds. Although both water vapor and clouds are better simulated in the L/MT than in the UT, there is no apparent correlation between the model biases in clouds and water vapor. Numerical scores are used to compare different model performances in regards to spatial mean, variance and distribution of CWC and H2O over tropical oceans.     Genetic control of potassium content of common bean seeds

    The objective of this work was to investigate possible maternal effects on potassium content of common bean seeds, as well as to estimate the heritability and selection gains in early hybrid generations for this character and to evaluate the efficiency of genetic selection to improve the nutritional quality of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Crosses with four cultivars from the Mesoamerican gene pool yielded the reciprocal F1 and F2 generations and the backcrossed populations (BCP1 and BCP2). The potassium content of the progenies was measured via nitric‑perchloric digestion and flame photometry. The potassium content in the tested progenies varied from 6.0 to 14.9 g kg-1 dry matter, and no significant maternal effect was observed. The narrow-sense heritability ranged from low (33.26%) to intermediate (43.05%). Partial dominance was observed for low potassium content in the seeds. No increase in potassium content was obtained through selection. Breeding common bean plants for increasing potassium content in seeds may be difficult because the local environment strongly influences the character
