    Arqueologia e história indígena no Pantanal

    O artigo apresenta uma síntese dos dados arqueológicos sobre o Pantanal e o seu entorno, principalmente em Mato Grosso e Mato Grosso do Sul. Elaborado com base na noção de arqueologia como história indígena de longa duração, o artigo considera as trajetórias de estabelecimento e consolidação territorial da ocupação indígena regional, os processos de formação da configuração etnográfica encontrada pelos europeus e os impactos do colonialismo. O principal objetivo consiste em mostrar que a diversidade cultural característica do cenário etnográfico pantaneiro está associada à dinâmica histórica e cultural da ocupação indígena desde períodos anteriores à chegada dos conquistadores e colonizadores de origem europeia.The article presents an overview of the archaeological data on the Pantanal and its surrounding areas, mainly in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Prepared based on the notion of archeology as long term indigenous history, the article considers the trajectories of territorial establishment and consolidation of the regional indigenous occupation, the formation processes of ethnographic setting found by Europeans and the impact of colonialism. The main objective is to show that cultural diversity characteristic of the Pantanal ethnographic scenario is associated with historical and cultural dynamics of indigenous occupation from periods prior to the arrival of the conquistadors and settlers of European origin

    Holocene small mammals hunted by owls and humans in southern Brazil: taphonomic evidence and biological significance

    Understanding resource utilization and economic diversification among Holocene hunter-gatherers in southern Brazil requires in-depth taphonomic analysis of faunal assemblages. Three Early to Late Holocene archaeological sites (Garivaldino, Pilger and Sangão) in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, revealed large assemblages of small mammals (˂1 kg) remains, composed mainly of rodents. To appreciate depositional processes of fauna in relation to human consumption, taphonomic attributes and processes were evaluated. The results indicated that the remains were accumulated through different antemortem taphonomic pathways, apparently linked to the size and natural history of the species represented. The small and medium-sized (150 g; Kunsia tomentosus, Gyldenstolpia sp. and Holochilus sp.), and several caviomorph rodents with aggregated spatial distributions (Echimyidae (?Dicolpomys fossor, Phyllomys sp., ?Clyomys riograndensis and ?Euryzygomatomys mordax), Caviidae (Cavia sp.), and Ctenomyidae (Ctenomys sp.)) showed evidence of thermoalteration patterns and cut marks on bones, suggesting human exploitation. A postmortem depositional environment was deduced from dendritic and branched patterns of rootlet etching, apparent mostly at Garivaldino and Pilger. Polished areas and holes on bone surfaces, and impregnation of manganese showed moderate (Sangão) or low (Garivaldino and Pilger) incidence, pointing to water transport under moderate (Pilger) and low (Garivaldino and Sangão) energy over short distances. The results obtained here provide the first clear evidence of early human exploitation of small mammals in southern Brazil, suggesting a diversification of economies. In addition, since several of the recorded rodents are today regionally or biologically extinct, a preliminary discussion about the potential impact of humans on this process is provided.Fil: Fernández, Fernando Julián.     O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as possíveis alterações existentes na composição e no processo de biodigestão anaeróbia dos dejetos de bovinos em fase de terminação alimentados com diferentes proporções de volumoso: concentrado e com diferentes tempos de retenção hidráulica (TRH). Foram utilizados 24 biodigestores batelada de bancada com 12 litros de capacidade, dos quais 12 foram abastecidos com dejetos de bovinos alimentados com a dieta 1 (60% volumoso:40% concentrado) e dieta 2 (40% volumoso:60% concentrado) e submetidos a 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de TRH. A eficiência do processo de biodigestão anaeróbia foi avaliada pelas reduções de sólidos totais, sólidos voláteis, fibra em detergente neutro, fibra em detergente ácido, celulose e número mais provável (NMP) de coliformes totais e termotolerantes, além dos potenciais de produção de biogás e metano. Os resultados mostraram que o aumento da proporção de volumoso na dieta levou a menor eficiência do processo, principalmente nos potenciais de produção de biogás e metano que foram em média 13% menor. Com relação ao NMP de coliformes totais e termotolerantes, foram observadas reduções significativas conforme aumentou TRH.<br>The aim of this survey was to evaluate the possible alterations that exist in composition and in anaerobic biodigestion process of cattle manure in phase of slaughter and fed with different proportions of roughage: concentrate and with different times of hydraulic retention (THR). 24 batch digesters of bench with capacity of 12 liters, from which 12 were provided with cattle manure that were fed with diet 1 (60% roughage: 40% concentrate) and diet 2 (40% roughage:60% concentrate) and submitted to 30; 60; 90 and 120 days of TRH were used. The efficiency of anaerobic biodigestion process was evaluated by reductions of total solids, volatile solids; neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, cellulose and the most probable number (MPN) of total and thermo tolerant coliforms, and production potential of biogas and methane were evaluated. Results showed that the increase of roughage proportion in diet conduced the smallest efficiency in the process, mainly in the production potential of biogas and methane, which were, in average, 13% smaller.     Proteolytic activity in the adult and larval stages of the human roundworm parasite Angiostrongylus costaricensis

    Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode that causes abdominal angiostrongyliasis, a widespread human parasitism in Latin America. This study aimed to characterize the protease profiles of different developmental stages of this helminth. First-stage larvae (L1) were obtained from the faeces of infected Sigmodon hispidus rodents and third-stage larvae (L3) were collected from mollusks Biomphalaria glabrata previously infected with L1. Adult worms were recovered from rodent mesenteric arteries. Protein extraction was performed after repeated freeze-thaw cycles followed by maceration of the nematodes in 40 mM Tris base. Proteolysis of gelatin was observed by zymography and found only in the larval stages. In L3, the gelatinolytic activity was effectively inhibited by orthophenanthroline, indicating the involvement of metalloproteases. The mechanistic class of the gelatinases from L1 could not be precisely determined using traditional class-specific inhibitors. Adult worm extracts were able to hydrolyze haemoglobin in solution, although no activity was observed by zymography. This haemoglobinolytic activity was ascribed to aspartic proteases following its effective inhibition by pepstatin, which also inhibited the haemoglobinolytic activity of L1 and L3 extracts. The characterization of protease expression throughout the A. costaricensis life cycle may reveal key factors influencing the process of parasitic infection and thus foster our understanding of the disease pathogenesis
