The objectives of this study were the investigation of the interactions between upland rice lines/cultivars x planting system, years and locations. The experiments were conducted in the agricultural years of 2001/02 and 2002/03 in Lavras, Uberlandia and Patrocinio in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil, in two planting systems: conventional and no-tillage. The treatments were 20 lines/cultivars and the evaluated traits were: plant height, flowering date, grain yield and disease incidence. The absence genotype x system interaction of grain yield indicated that cultivars recommended for sowing traditional can be utilized in the no-tillage system. The interactions genotypes x locations and genotypes x years were significant. The Cruz methodology indicated that cultivar Caiapo presented adaptation in unfavourable environments and the line CNAs 8983 showed response in the environment improvement. The Annicchiarico methodology showed that Guarani and CNAs 8989 were the most stable

Common bean white mold resistance sources identified by greenhouse screening in Brazil.

    Get PDF
The main goal of the present work was to evaluate the reaction of 39 common bean lines to white mold in a greenhouse screening. These bean genotypes include Brazilian cultivars and advanced lines from different market classes, in addition to resistance sources previously reported by CIAT (Cali, Colombia). The effective identification of resistance sources and superior genotypes is a basic and continuous step of breeding efforts aiming to develop/select resistant cultivars to be used in the integrated control of white mold

Efficiency of methods for conducting segregating populations in the breeding of common beans for protein quality.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is part of the daily diet of over 300 million people in the world and is a staple food of low-income populations, due to its high protein content. Many authors have proposed a further improvement by breeding methods that exploit the existing genetic variability. The objective of this research was to evaluate the genetic potential of segregating bean populations with variability for several traits and conducted by different breeding methods. The F2 segregating population was developed from a cross of the parental genotypes CNFC 7812 and CNFC 8056.One hundred and fifty randomly taken F2 plants originated the segregating populations, which were conducted until the fifth generation by the following breeding procedures: Single Seed Descent (SSD), Bulk and Bulk within F2. The total grain protein content of the F5 families was then analyzed. It was concluded that there was enough genetic variability in the cross under study. The Bulk method proved to be the most efficient since it generated families with superior averages for the trait protein content in comparison with the other breeding methods
