The author describes Lamprospora ascoboloides Seaver, a rare species belonging to the Ascomycetes, living associated with mosses mainly ofthe genus Dicranella, collected for the first time in Italy. Iodophanus hyperboreus T. Schumach., a rare ascomycete, known to occur in the Arctic, is described from the Brescia province in the Alps (Italy). This is the second record for Italy; the mushroom has been scarcely collected elsewhere. A historical introduction, descriptions of the genus Iodophanus Korf and of the species in question, two colour pictures of macro- and microscopic features and observations, and comparisons with similar species, are provided.

Biodiversity of wood-decay fungi in Italy

Current knowledge about Italian wood-decay fungi (Basidiomycota and Ascomycota) is surveyed: 1582 taxa belonging to Ascomycota (341) and Basidiomycota (1241) have been reported, including 23 species new to science of Basidiomycota described from Italy within the last five years. Evaluating diversity of wood-decay fungi can provide a more accurate estimation of species richness for fungi which are an important functional component of ecosystems. Aphyllophoroid and Ascomycota species play an important role in habitat conservation and management. Sardinia, Sicily, the Alps and the Apennines are \u201chot spots\u201d for wood-decay Basidiomycota in Italy
