    Engaging Diverse Secondary Students in International Collaborative Networked Learning

    This study examines the processes of engaging a group of highly diverse 7th and 8th grade students in the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) for collaborative activities through a global networked learning environment called APEC Cyber Academy. Thirty-six middle school students went through a nine-week project-based learning program that aimed at improving ICT skills and promoting international peer learning. Although students showed strong interest in learning about ICT, the findings suggest that students need to be coached in collaboration skills, given appropriate roles to ensure proper division of labor, and supervised closely to ensure the completion of tasks

    Propuesta de un sistema financiero integral que permita evaluar una empresa del sector de distribución de productos farmacéuticos para la toma de decisiones

    El objetivo del trabajo final es realizar un análisis financiero para una empresa distribuidora de productos farmacéuticos con base en los últimos cinco años. Para ello, se examinarán los estados financieros correspondientes al periodo comprendido desde 2013 hasta 2017, al 30 de septiembre. En general, se busca realizar un diagnóstico y análisis de la situación actual de la Empresa para mejorar la toma de decisiones. La Empresa es una distribuidora de productos farmacéuticos de tamaño mediano, que recientemente tuvo un cambio de administración. A pesar de que tiene una trayectoria de 36 años, durante los últimos dos años pasó a tener una junta directiva nueva. Dicha situación conllevó varios cambios organizaciones y estructurales. Actualmente, el mercado de distribuidoras de productos farmacéuticos en Costa Rica está siendo dominado por tres o cuatro empresas. A pesar de que la Empresa en estudio es considerada de tamaño mediano, en ciertos sectores compite con las grandes empresas. Por lo tanto, el presente trabajo busca analizar la situación actual de la Empresa para proponer un sistema financiero integral, el cual permita tener visibilidad sobre los gastos, las deudas y las inversiones realizados.     An automatic method to generate domain-specific investigator networks using PubMed abstracts

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Collaboration among investigators has become critical to scientific research. This includes ad hoc collaboration established through personal contacts as well as formal consortia established by funding agencies. Continued growth in online resources for scientific research and communication has promoted the development of highly networked research communities. Extending these networks globally requires identifying additional investigators in a given domain, profiling their research interests, and collecting current contact information. We present a novel strategy for building investigator networks dynamically and producing detailed investigator profiles using data available in PubMed abstracts.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We developed a novel strategy to obtain detailed investigator information by automatically parsing the affiliation string in PubMed records. We illustrated the results by using a published literature database in human genome epidemiology (HuGE Pub Lit) as a test case. Our parsing strategy extracted country information from 92.1% of the affiliation strings in a random sample of PubMed records and in 97.0% of HuGE records, with accuracies of 94.0% and 91.0%, respectively. Institution information was parsed from 91.3% of the general PubMed records (accuracy 86.8%) and from 94.2% of HuGE PubMed records (accuracy 87.0). We demonstrated the application of our approach to dynamic creation of investigator networks by creating a prototype information system containing a large database of PubMed abstracts relevant to human genome epidemiology (HuGE Pub Lit), indexed using PubMed medical subject headings converted to Unified Medical Language System concepts. Our method was able to identify 70–90% of the investigators/collaborators in three different human genetics fields; it also successfully identified 9 of 10 genetics investigators within the PREBIC network, an existing preterm birth research network.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We successfully created a web-based prototype capable of creating domain-specific investigator networks based on an application that accurately generates detailed investigator profiles from PubMed abstracts combined with robust standard vocabularies. This approach could be used for other biomedical fields to efficiently establish domain-specific investigator networks.</p

    On the Inability of Markov Models to Capture Criticality in Human Mobility

    We examine the non-Markovian nature of human mobility by exposing the inability of Markov models to capture criticality in human mobility. In particular, the assumed Markovian nature of mobility was used to establish a theoretical upper bound on the predictability of human mobility (expressed as a minimum error probability limit), based on temporally correlated entropy. Since its inception, this bound has been widely used and empirically validated using Markov chains. We show that recurrent-neural architectures can achieve significantly higher predictability, surpassing this widely used upper bound. In order to explain this anomaly, we shed light on several underlying assumptions in previous research works that has resulted in this bias. By evaluating the mobility predictability on real-world datasets, we show that human mobility exhibits scale-invariant long-range correlations, bearing similarity to a power-law decay. This is in contrast to the initial assumption that human mobility follows an exponential decay. This assumption of exponential decay coupled with Lempel-Ziv compression in computing Fano's inequality has led to an inaccurate estimation of the predictability upper bound. We show that this approach inflates the entropy, consequently lowering the upper bound on human mobility predictability. We finally highlight that this approach tends to overlook long-range correlations in human mobility. This explains why recurrent-neural architectures that are designed to handle long-range structural correlations surpass the previously computed upper bound on mobility predictability

    High-dose daptomycin and fosfomycin treatment of a patient with endocarditis caused by daptomycin-nonsusceptible Staphylococcus aureus: Case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Emergence of daptomycin-nonsusceptible (DNS) <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>is a dreadful problem in the treatment of endocarditis. Few current therapeutic agents are effective for treating infections caused by DNS <it>S. aureus</it>.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe the emergence of DNS <it>S. aureus</it>. in a patient with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device -related endocarditis who was priorily treated with daptomycin. Metastatic dissemination as osteomyelitis further complicated the management of endocarditis. The dilemma was successfully managed by surgical removal of the ICD device and combination antimicrobial therapy with high-dose daptomycin and fosfomycin.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Surgical removal of intracardiac devices remains an important adjunctive measure in the treatment of endocarditis. Our case suggests that combination therapy is more favorable than single-agent therapy for infections caused by DNS <it>S. aureus</it>.</p

    Longitudinal bioimpedance vector plots add little value to fluid management of peritoneal dialysis patients

    Bioimpedance (BI) has the potential to enable better management of fluid balance, which can worsen over time on peritoneal dialysis (PD) due to loss of residual kidney function and progressive muscle wasting. We undertook a prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded end-point controlled trial to determine whether availability of longitudinal BI measures as vector plots helped clinicians maintain stable fluid status over 12 months in 308 peritoneal dialysis patients from the United Kingdom and Shanghai, China. Patients were recruited into 4 groups nested within a single trial design according to country and residual kidney function. Nonanuric subjects from both countries demonstrated stable fluid volumes irrespective of randomization. Hydration worsened in control anuric patients in Shanghai with increased extracellular/total body water (ECW/TBW) ratio (0.04; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.06) and reduced TBW (-1.76 L 95% CI: -2.70, -0.82), but was stable in the BI intervention group whose dialysate glucose prescription was increased. However, multilevel analysis incorporating data from both countries showed worsening ECW/TBW in active and control anuric patients. Clinicians in the United Kingdom reduced target weight in the nonanuric BI intervention group causing a reduction in TBW without beneficial effects on ECW or blood pressure. Thus, routine use of longitudinal BI vector plots to improve clinical management of fluid status is not supported.Kidney International advance online publication, 14 October 2015; doi:10.1038/ki.2015.294
