A poorly mixed mantle transition zone and its thermal state inferred from seismic waves
The abrupt changes in mineralogical properties across the Earthâs mantle transition zone substantially impact convection and thermochemical fluxes between the upper and lower mantle. While the 410-km discontinuity at the top of the mantle transition zone is detected with all types of seismic waves, the 660-km boundary is mostly invisible to underside P-wave reflections (P660P). The cause for this observation is debated. The dissociation of ringwoodite and garnet into lower-mantle minerals both contribute to the â660â visibility; only the garnet reaction favours material exchanges across the discontinuity. Here, we combine large datasets of SS and PP precursors, mineralogical modelling and data-mining techniques to obtain a global thermal map of the mantle transition zone, and explain the lack of P660P visibility. We find that its prevalent absence requires a chemically unequilibrated mantle, and its visibility in few locations is associated with potential temperatures greater than 1,800 K. Such temperatures occur in approximately 0.6% of Earth, indicating that the 660 is dominated by ringwoodite decomposition, which tends to impede mantle flow. We find broad regions with elevated temperatures beneath the Pacific surrounded by major volcanic hotspots, indicating plume retention and ponding of hot materials in the mantle transition zone
Reduction of seafood processing wastewater using technologies enhanced by swimâbed technology
The increasing growth of the seafood processing industries considerably requires more industrial process activities and water consumption. It is estimated that approximately 10â40 m3 of wastewater is generated from those industries for processing one-tonne of raw materials. Due to limitations and regulations in natural resources utilization, a suitable and systematic wastewater treatment plant is very important to meet rigorous discharge standards. As a result of food waste biodegradability, the biological treatment and some extent of swim-bed technology, including a novel acryl-ïŹbre (bioïŹlm) material might be used effectively to meet the efïŹuent discharge criteria. Extragalactic Results from the Infrared Space Observatory
More than a decade ago the IRAS satellite opened the realm of external
galaxies for studies in the 10 to 100 micron band and discovered emission from
tens of thousands of normal and active galaxies. With the 1995-1998 mission of
the Infrared Space Observatory the next major steps in extragalactic infrared
astronomy became possible: detailed imaging, spectroscopy and
spectro-photometry of many galaxies detected by IRAS, as well as deep surveys
in the mid- and far- IR. The spectroscopic data reveal a wealth of detail about
the nature of the energy source(s) and about the physical conditions in
galaxies. ISO's surveys for the first time explore the infrared emission of
distant, high-redshift galaxies. ISO's main theme in extragalactic astronomy is

f(R) theories
Over the past decade, f(R) theories have been extensively studied as one of
the simplest modifications to General Relativity. In this article we review
various applications of f(R) theories to cosmology and gravity - such as
inflation, dark energy, local gravity constraints, cosmological perturbations,
and spherically symmetric solutions in weak and strong gravitational
backgrounds. We present a number of ways to distinguish those theories from
General Relativity observationally and experimentally. We also discuss the
extension to other modified gravity theories such as Brans-Dicke theory and
Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and address models that can satisfy both cosmological and

Teaching Feedback to First-year Medical Students: Long-term Skill Retention and Accuracy of Student Self-assessment
Giving and receiving feedback are critical skills and should be taught early in the process of medical education, yet few studies discuss the effect of feedback curricula for first-year medical students.
To study short-term and long-term skills and attitudes of first-year medical students after a multidisciplinary feedback curriculum.

First-year students at a public university medical school.
We collected anonymous student feedback to faculty before, immediately after, and 8 months after the curriculum and classified comments by recommendation (reinforcing/corrective) and specificity (global/specific). Students also self-rated their comfort with and quality of feedback. We assessed changes in comments (skills) and self-rated abilities (attitudes) across the three time points.
Across the three time points, studentsâ evaluation contained more corrective specific comments per evaluation [pre-curriculum mean (SD) 0.48 (0.99); post-curriculum 1.20 (1.7); year-end 0.95 (1.5); pâ=â0.006]. Students reported increased skill and comfort in giving and receiving feedback and at providing constructive feedback (pâ<â0.001). However, the number of specific comments on year-end evaluations declined [pre 3.35 (2.0); post 3.49 (2.3); year-end 2.8 (2.1)]; pâ=â0.008], as did studentsâ self-rated ability to give specific comments.
Teaching feedback to early medical students resulted in improved skills of delivering corrective specific feedback and enhanced comfort with feedback. However, studentsâ overall ability to deliver specific feedback decreased over time
