Parque Madureira: Exceptional or Merely Good in Comparison?

Nearly all the major urban planning initiatives associated with the ongoing transformation of Rio de Janeiro, such as the renovation of the port district, the creation of the Olympic village, and the opening of cross-municipal bus-rapid-transit lines, have been greeted by protests and criticism from architects and urban planners. One project, the Parque Madureira, a new green corridor in the city’s North Zone, has received great acclaim by Brazilian and international urbanists. Local residents seem to like it, too. Representatives of social movements, in contrast, point out that the Parque Madureira involved the same kind of favela removal criticized elsewhere. Is the Parque Madureira truly exceptional or does it merely look good in comparison to shortcomings elsewhere? What are its implications in the larger transformation of the city? This paper seeks to answer those questions by comparing the Parque Madureira both to other current urban interventions and to older parks, such as the Quinta da Boa Vista and the Aterro do Flamengo

A Social Autopsy of the Kiss Nightclub Fire

This article offers a social autopsy of the Kiss Nightclub Fire and an exploration of the networks of trauma and reconstruction in its wake. We present a critical analysis of the social and political conditions that created this large-scale tragedy, placing these in the context of political conflict and profit-seeking in Brazil’s recent past. We trace the trauma of the fire in a network of survivors and family members in Rio Grande do Sul and beyond, and the contrasting ways they have sought to make sense of and respond to the fire with political action and/or spiritual exploration

Quando nós (Ceres Víctora and Bryan McCann) realizamos a pesquisa para esta edição especial sobre o incêndio da Boate Kis, nós entrevistamos sobreviventes, familiares de vítimas e advogados que lutam por justiça. Essas entrevistas foram fundamentais para nossa pesquisa e, embora nós não acreditamos que sabemos o que eles viveram desde o trágico incêndio, sentar com eles e ouvir seus testemunhos têm sido vital para nosso entendimento e organização deste trabalho. Nós temos sincera admiração por sua dignidade e persistência e agradecimento por sua disponibilidade de compartilhar suas histórias. Com a autorização dos interlocutores, nós incluímos duas das entrevistas mais reveladoras que nos concederam.  As entrevistas aqui publicadas foram levemente editadas para manter o fluxo da conversação. Nesse sentido, foram suprimidas algumas palavras repetidas, sons que ocupavam momentos de hesitação e segmentos de fala que versavam sobre temas que dispersavam do tema principal da entrevista. Mas no texto foi mantida a linguagem informal que caracterizou os nossos encontros. Foram mantidas expressões linguísticas regionais, tais como vocabulário local, conjugação verbal e formas de concordância nominal características do Rio Grande do Sul a fim de aproximar o(a) leitor(a) do sabor das conversas cotidianas
