Developing a Home Based Chemotherapy Model

    Get PDF
Lessons Learned Based on our criteria, most medications can be administered in the home setting. A major barrier to administration at home is stability of medications at room temperature. This issue can be addressed by transporting and storing the medication in a refrigerated container. Expectedly, injectable drugs and medications with short infusion times that are stable at room temperature would be easiest to administer at home

EFFECT OF WATER ACTIVITY ON THE STABILITY OF BIXIN IN AN ANNATTO EXTRACT MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE MODEL SYSTEM

    No full text
The influence of water activity on the stability of bixin in an annatto extract-microcrystalline cellulose model system during storage at 21 +/- 1 degrees C in the presence or absence of light and/or air was investigated. The water adsorption characteristic of the model system was determined. The samples were stored in desiccators containing saturated salt solutions for water activities of 0.33 to 0.97 and after equilibrium was reached, the samples were stored in the presence or absence of air and/or light. The degradation of bixin in every condition tested followed a first-order reaction. By comparing half-lives, bixin was observed to be more stable at intermediate/higher water activities.52438939

Sodium butyrate does not decrease the evolution of precancerous lesions in rats

    No full text
Purpose: To evaluate the preventive effect of sodium butyrate in the appearance of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in rats after induction with the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Methods: Forty Wistar rats were separated into four groups (n=10) distributed as follows: control 1, control 2, butyrate 1 and butyrate 2. The groups control 1 and butyrate 1 remained under experimentation for 4 weeks, while the groups control 2 and butyrate 2 remained for 8 weeks. In the first four weeks, the animals of the control groups received water ad libitum and the animals of the butyrate groups received a sodium butyrate solution (3.4%) ad libitum. Injections of the drug 1,2-dimethylhydrazine were applied during the two first weeks of the experiment in all the animals, concurrently with the application of sodium butyrate. The large intestine of the animals was removed, for the analysis of the ACF and of the content of polyamines. The animal feces were collected for the analysis of the SCFA profile. Results: The spermidine presented a higher concentration in the group butyrate 2 in comparison to the group control 2. There was a significant difference in the concentration value (mu mol/mL) of acetate in comparison to the groups control 2 and butyrate 2. Conclusion: The use of sodium butyrate together with the induction of colorectal cancer was not effective in the prevention of the disease progression.25650751

Predicting Final Implant Volume in Two-stage Prepectoral Breast Reconstruction

    No full text
Background:. Two-stage implant-based breast reconstruction remains the most commonly performed reconstructive modality following mastectomy. Although prior studies have explored the relationship between tissue expander (TE) features and permanent implant (PI) size in subpectoral reconstruction, no such study exists in prepectoral reconstruction. This study aims to identify pertinent TE characteristics and evaluate their correlations with PI size for prepectoral implant-based reconstruction. Methods:. This study analyzed patients who underwent two-stage prepectoral tissue expansion for breast reconstruction followed by implant placement. Patient demographics and oncologic characteristics were recorded. TE and PI features were evaluated. Significant predictors for PI volume were identified using linear and multivariate regression analyses. Results:. We identified 177 patients and 296 breast reconstructions that met inclusion criteria. All reconstructions were performed in the prepectoral plane with the majority using acellular dermal matrix (93.8%) and primarily silicone implants (94.3%). Mean TE size was 485.4 cm3 with mean initial fill of 245.8 cm3 and mean final fill of 454.4 cm3. Mean PI size was 502.9 cm3 with a differential fill volume (PI-TE) of 11.7 cm3. Multivariate analysis identified significant features for PI size prediction, including TE size (R2 = 0.60; P < 0.0001) and TE final fill volume (R2 = 0.57; P < 0.0001). The prediction expression for TE final fill and TE size was calculated as 26.6 + 0.38*(TE final fill) + 0.61*(TE size). Conclusions:. TE size and final expansion volume were significant variables for implant size prediction. With prepectoral implant placement gaining popularity, the predictive formula may help optimize preoperative planning and decision-making in prepectoral reconstructions

Epidemiology of adult patients with atopic dermatitis in AWARE 1: A second international survey

Background: There are gaps in our understanding of the epidemiology of atopic dermatitis (AD) in adults. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and severity of AD in adults from countries/regions within Asia, Eurasia, Latin America, Middle East, and Russia. Methods: This international, web-based survey was performed in Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and United Arab Emirates. Questionnaires were sent to adult members of online respondent panels for determination of AD and assessment of severity. A diagnosis of AD required respondents to meet the modified United Kingdom (UK) Working Party criteria and to self-report they had a physician diagnosis of AD. Severity of AD was determined using Patient-Oriented Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (PO-SCORAD), Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM), and Patient Global Assessment (PGA). Results: Among respondents by country/region the prevalence of AD ranged from 3.4% in Israel to 33.7% in Thailand. The prevalence was generally higher in females versus males. Severity varied by scale, although regardless of scale the proportion of respondents with mild and moderate disease was higher than severe disease. PGA consistently resulted in the lowest proportion of severe AD (range 2.4% China – 10.8% Turkey) relative to PO-SCORAD (range 13.4% China – 41.6% KSA) and POEM (range 5.1% China – 16.6% Israel). Conclusions: This survey highlights the importance of AD in adults, with high prevalence and high morbidity among respondents and emphasizes that AD is not just a disease of childhood—there is disease persistence and chronicity in adults

The composition of three types of date juices, that differs by their couple of extraction and obtained from the rest of the sorting of cultivars Deglet Nour, were studied. The fruits were grown in Djerid region (Tozeur, Tunisia). Juices were characterised by yield, pH, soluble solids, organic acid, minerals content, individual carbohydrates, vitamin C, yeasts and moulds, coliforms and flora total aerobe contents. For the physicochemical parameters, only the J3 presents the best yields with content in citric acid of 2.13 g L-1, in phosphor of 0.083% (dry mater), in glucose 26.529 g L-1, in fructose 39.59 g L-1 and in sucrose 185.883 g L-1. For the bacteriological parameters, the results show that all prepared juices answer the microbiological requirements of hygiene well
