Development and metamorphosis of the cyphonautes larva of Membranipora serrilamella Osburn

Membranipora serrilamella Osburn is very abundant on Japanese edible kelp Laminaria japonica Areshoug. Protandric gametogenesis, discharge of matured eggs and external fertilization were observed in the aquarium. Total-equal type of cleavage, formation of embryo, change of egg-membrane into shells of Cyphonautes were ascertained under the microscope. Morphology, behavior and settlement of larva and its metamorphosis into a twin-ancestrula and also early colonial formation were studied.Membranipora serrilamella Osburn est très abondant sur le Laminaria japonica Areshoug, varech japonais comestible. La gametogenèse protandrique, la libération des oeufs mûrs et la fertilisation externe ont été observées en aquarium. La division de type total-égal, la formation de l'embryon, la transformation de la membrane de l'oeuf en coquille de Cyphonautes ont été constatées au microscope. La morphologie, le comportement et la fixation de la larve, sa métamorphose en une ancestrule double et aussi les premiers stades de la colonie ont été étudiés.Mawatari Shizuo, Mawatari Shunsuke F.
