Weed seeds in the soil per hectare can reach millions of amount and consists of many differentspecies. The depth of the weed seeds can be used as indicator of competitive level between crop andweeds. The research aims to determine the composition and density of seed bank at various level ofsoil depths at “ Balai Benih Palawija ” Tanjung Selamat North Sumatra. Soil Samples warecollected from four soil depths, namely: 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-15 cm,15-20 cm using metal pipe withdiameter of 3 cm. The parameters measured were the number of weeds that grow by the depth ofsoil, weed composition (%) per depth of soil and weeds growing time per depth of soil. From resultshowed that the highest density of weed seed bank is found at the depth of 0 – 5 cm. Weedcomposition dominated ( 68.9 % ) by broadleaf weeds. There are differences in the composition anddensity of the real seed bank at different depths in the soil in the field area of Balai Benih IndukTanjung Selamat. Composition and density of weed tends to be lower in deeper soil depths

Accuracy of diagnostic tests for respiratory syncytial virus infection within a paediatric hospital population in Kilifi County, Kenya

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-induced lower respiratory tract disease is a prominent cause of hospitalisation among children aged 91%) and closely mimicked the pattern given by the Se and Sp values respectively. None of the examined covariates (age, sex and pneumonia status) significantly influenced the accuracy of the tests. The evaluation found little to choose between the three diagnostic tests. Nonetheless, with its relative affordability, the conventional IFAT continues to hold promise for use in patient care and surveillance activities for RSV infection within settings where children are hospitalised with severe acute respiratory illness. Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Biology, 2010.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references.Meiosis is the process by which haploid gametes are produced from a diploid progenitor cell. Accurate completion of the meiotic divisions requires a variety of modifications to the mitotic chromosome segregation machinery, which allow the reductional meiotic chromosome segregation program to occur. Oscillations in the activity of Cyclin- Dependent Kinases (CDKs) drive virtually every event in the mitotic cell cycle, including events such as cell cycle entry, DNA replication, and chromosome segregation. While much is known about the activity of CDKs, the regulation of CDK activity, and the mechanisms by which CDK activity promotes cell cycle events during vegetative growth in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, relatively little is known about the roles of CDKs during the meiotic divisions. This work examines CDK activity during meiosis, the regulation of CDK activity during meiosis, and mechanisms by which CDKs regulate proper meiotic chromosome segregation. First, a striking diversity in Clb-CDK activity is observed during meiosis, including the identification of Clb1-CDK, and Clb3-CDK as meiosis I and meiosis II specific Clb-CDKs respectively. Second, Clb3 protein is shown to be restricted to meiosis II by translational control mediated by the 5'UTR of the CLB3 message. Finally, premature production of Clb3 results in the premature separation of sister-chromatids during meiosis I.by Thomas M. Carlile.Ph.D

While African leopard populations are considered to be continuous as demonstrated by their high genetic variation, the southernmost leopard population exists in the Eastern and Western Cape, South Africa, where anthropogenic activities may be affecting this population's structure. Little is known about the elusive, last free-roaming top predator in the region and this study is the first to report on leopard population structuring using nuclear DNA. By analyzing 14 microsatellite markers from 40 leopard tissue samples, we aimed to understand the populations' structure, genetic distance, and gene flow (Nm). Our results, based on spatially explicit analysis with Bayesian methods, indicate that leopards in the region exist in a fragmented population structure with lower than expected genetic diversity. Three population groups were identified, between which low to moderate levels of gene flow were observed (Nm 0.5 to 3.6). One subpopulation exhibited low genetic differentiation, suggesting a continuous population structure, while the remaining two appear to be less connected, with low emigration and immigration between these populations. Therefore, genetic barriers are present between the subpopulations, and while leopards in the study region may function as a metapopulation, anthropogenic activities threaten to decrease habitat and movement further. Our results indicate that the leopard population may become isolated within a few generations and suggest that management actions should aim to increase habitat connectivity and reduce human-carnivore conflict. Understanding genetic diversity and connectivity of populations has important conservation implications that can highlight management of priority populations to reverse the effects of human-caused extinctions
