    Equilibrium and Non-Equilibrium Hard Thermal Loop Resummation in the Real Time Formalism

    We investigate the use of the hard thermal loop (HTL) resummation technique in non-equilibrium field theory. We use the Keldysh representation of the real time formalism (RTF). We derive the HTL photon self energy and the resummed photon propagator. We show that no pinch singularities appear in the non-equilibrium HTL effective propagator. We discuss a possible regularization mechanism for these singularities at higher orders.     Fluid dynamics of bacterial turbulence

    Self-sustained turbulent structures have been observed in a wide range of living fluids, yet no quantitative theory exists to explain their properties. We report experiments on active turbulence in highly concentrated 3D suspensions of Bacillus subtilis and compare them with a minimal fourth-order vector-field theory for incompressible bacterial dynamics. Velocimetry of bacteria and surrounding fluid, determined by imaging cells and tracking colloidal tracers, yields consistent results for velocity statistics and correlations over two orders of magnitude in kinetic energy, revealing a decrease of fluid memory with increasing swimming activity and linear scaling between energy and enstrophy. The best-fit model parameters allow for quantitative agreement with experimental data.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Ward Identities in Non-equilibrium QED

    We verify the QED Ward identity for the two- and three -point functions at non-equilibrium in the HTL limit. We use the Keldysh formalism of real time finite temperature field theory.     Influence of molecular temperature on the coherence of fullerenes in a near-field interferometer

    We study C70 fullerene matter waves in a Talbot-Lau interferometer as a function of their temperature. While the ideal fringe visibility is observed at moderate molecular temperatures, we find a gradual degradation of the interference contrast if the molecules are heated before entering the interferometer. A method is developed to assess the distribution of the micro-canonical temperatures of the molecules in free flight. This way the heating-dependent reduction of interference contrast can be compared with the predictions of quantum theory. We find that the observed loss of coherence agrees quantitatively with the expected decoherence rate due to the thermal radiation emitted by the hot molecules.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    ALLOREACTIVE T LYMPHOCYTES CULTURED FROM LIVER TRANSPLANT BIOPSIES: ASSOCIATIONS OF HLA SPECIFICITY WITH CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS.

    Lymphocyte cultures grown from liver allograft biopsies were shown to exhibit alloreactivity towards donor cells as measured by primed lymphocyte testing (PLT). The PLT specificity was determined in assays using HLA typed panel cells and/or by inhibition testing with HLA specific monoclonal antibodies. Certain cultures exhibited PLT specificity towards class I HLA antigens of the donor, whereas others were specific for class II HLA antigens or recognized mixtures of class I and II antigens. These PLT specificity patterns were compared with clinical, histological and laboratory findings on the liver transplant patients at the time of the biopsy. Biopsies yielding class I specific PLT cells were taken generally during the earlier posttransplant period, whereas class II specific cells were grown from later biopsies. There was no significant correlation of the PLT specificity towards class I vs II antigens with the levels of total or direct bilirubin, serum glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), although a trend towards higher values was noted for biopsies presenting with a class II specific infiltrate. However, the levels of gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) were significantly increased when biopsies yielded class II specific rather than class I specific PLT cells. Biopsy histology showed more damage to bile duct epithelium in association with class II PLT specificity whereas intense but often reversible infiltrates were found in biopsies yielding class I specific cells. The elevated GGTP and AP levels are probably related to the interaction of class II specific T cells with bile duct epithelium, which has been shown to express induced class II HLA antigens on their cell surface

    Driven Spin Systems as Quantum Thermodynamic Machines: Fundamental Limits

    We show that coupled two level systems like qubits studied in quantum information can be used as a thermodynamic machine. At least three qubits or spins are necessary and arranged in a chain. The system is interfaced between two split baths and the working spin in the middle is externally driven. The machine performs Carnot-type cycles and is able to work as heat pump or engine depending on the temperature difference of the baths ΔT\Delta T and the energy differences in the spin system ΔE\Delta E. It can be shown that the efficiency is a function of ΔT\Delta T and ΔE\Delta E.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    The aim of this study was to describe through concrete props in learning the material webs simple geometry can improve student learning outcomes. The method used is descriptive method with the shape of the classroom action research study. The study was conducted in class V SDS Usaba Piece, Sungai Laur. Number of Students 29 students who comprise 9 male students and 21 female students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Based on the first cycle of mastery learning students only 36.67%. The achievement is low. Based on the reflection of the second cycle with improvements in the planning and in the implementation of learning. In the second cycle there is an increase, in which classical learning completeness be 86.76%. It shows that the use of concrete props in mathematics learning can improve student learning outcomes

    Fractional derivatives of random walks: Time series with long-time memory

    We review statistical properties of models generated by the application of a (positive and negative order) fractional derivative operator to a standard random walk and show that the resulting stochastic walks display slowly-decaying autocorrelation functions. The relation between these correlated walks and the well-known fractionally integrated autoregressive (FIGARCH) models, commonly used in econometric studies, is discussed. The application of correlated random walks to simulate empirical financial times series is considered and compared with the predictions from FIGARCH and the simpler FIARCH processes.
