Lord Cochrane was a Scottish admiral who became famous for his actions during the napoleonic wars. He was later contracted by Chilean and Peruvian patriots to help fight Spain in their independence wars. D. Pedro I hired his services to organize the Brazilian War Navy, and he was very effective in fighting the rebellions in Bahia, Maranhão and Pará. Cochrane later stole all Maranhão’s treasury, considering himself not well paid for his services. Cochrane was made Marquis of Maranhão, a title highlighted in his tomb at Westminster Abbey in London

Villegagnon: herói ou vilão? Villegagnon: hero or villain?

The reason for this was the frequently re-edited book, Travel to the Land of Brazil by Jean de Lery, as well as the History of Martyrs by Jean Crespin, both found among the historians. Villegagnon is portrayed as the villain. Recently in 1991, the naval historian, Leonce Peillard, published in Paris a book entitled Villegagnon, the Vice-admiral of Britanny and Viceroy of Brazil (Perrin Editions) that showed convincing recent research explaining and absolving Villegagnon of the Calvinists' accusations. After this, the Brazilian Navy decided to pay homage to Villegagnon and in the year 2000, the Brazilian ambassador in France raised an obelisk made of stones from the Island in Provins, his birthplace, near Paris. The French admiral is considered by many historians as the true founder of Rio de Janeiro and not Estacio de Sa, who only arrived in Guanabara eleven years later

ABSTRACT Dom Pedro II and Wagner. v. 19, n. 2, p. 215-232, jul./dez. 1991 Based on the autobiography of Wagner and the correspondence of Dom Pedro, the author evokes the great admiration that the Brazilian Emperor had for the German composer, including his having contributed financially to the construction of the Bayreuth which is dedicated exclusively to Wagner´s music, and having attended its inauguration in the company of the German Emperor. The author describes how Dom Pedro contributed indirectly to the thematic choice of the opera Tristão e Isolda, and led the composer to begin to write this work whose première was planned for Rio de Janeiro and dedicated to the Brazilian Emperor. The author comments on the motives which led Wagner to undertake such a project and analyses the errors caused by the precarious conditions of communication at the time, as well as the factors that impeded Wagner´s visit to Brazil.
