Spin Orientation and Spin Precession in Inversion-Asymmetric Quasi Two-Dimensional Electron Systems
Inversion asymmetry induced spin splitting of the electron states in quasi
two-dimensional (2D) systems can be attributed to an effective magnetic field B
which varies in magnitude and orientation as a function of the in-plane wave
vector k||. Using a realistic 8x8 Kane model that fully takes into account spin
splitting because of both bulk inversion asymmetry and structure inversion
asymmetry we investigate the spin orientation and the effective field B for
different configurations of a quasi 2D electron system. It is shown that these
quantities depend sensitively on the crystallographic direction in which the
quasi 2D system was grown as well as on the magnitude and orientation of the
in-plane wave vector k||. These results are used to discuss how spin-polarized
electrons can precess in the field B(k||). As a specific example we consider
GaInAs-InP quantum wells.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
ExoClock Project III: 450 new exoplanet ephemerides from ground and space observations
The ExoClock project has been created with the aim of increasing the
efficiency of the Ariel mission. It will achieve this by continuously
monitoring and updating the ephemerides of Ariel candidates over an extended
period, in order to produce a consistent catalogue of reliable and precise
ephemerides. This work presents a homogenous catalogue of updated ephemerides
for 450 planets, generated by the integration of 18000 data points from
multiple sources. These sources include observations from ground-based
telescopes (ExoClock network and ETD), mid-time values from the literature and
light-curves from space telescopes (Kepler/K2 and TESS). With all the above, we
manage to collect observations for half of the post-discovery years (median),
with data that have a median uncertainty less than one minute. In comparison
with literature, the ephemerides generated by the project are more precise and
less biased. More than 40\% of the initial literature ephemerides had to be
updated to reach the goals of the project, as they were either of low precision
or drifting. Moreover, the integrated approach of the project enables both the
monitoring of the majority of the Ariel candidates (95\%), and also the
identification of missing data. The dedicated ExoClock network effectively
supports this task by contributing additional observations when a gap in the
data is identified. These results highlight the need for continuous monitoring
to increase the observing coverage of the candidate planets. Finally, the
extended observing coverage of planets allows us to detect trends (TTVs -
Transit Timing Variations) for a sample of 19 planets. All products, data, and
codes used in this work are open and accessible to the wider scientific
community.Comment: Recommended for publication to ApJS (reviewer's comments

Semiconductor Spintronics
Spintronics refers commonly to phenomena in which the spin of electrons in a
solid state environment plays the determining role. In a more narrow sense
spintronics is an emerging research field of electronics: spintronics devices
are based on a spin control of electronics, or on an electrical and optical
control of spin or magnetism. This review presents selected themes of
semiconductor spintronics, introducing important concepts in spin transport,
spin injection, Silsbee-Johnson spin-charge coupling, and spindependent
tunneling, as well as spin relaxation and spin dynamics. The most fundamental
spin-dependent nteraction in nonmagnetic semiconductors is spin-orbit coupling.
Depending on the crystal symmetries of the material, as well as on the
structural properties of semiconductor based heterostructures, the spin-orbit
coupling takes on different functional forms, giving a nice playground of
effective spin-orbit Hamiltonians. The effective Hamiltonians for the most
relevant classes of materials and heterostructures are derived here from
realistic electronic band structure descriptions. Most semiconductor device
systems are still theoretical concepts, waiting for experimental
demonstrations. A review of selected proposed, and a few demonstrated devices
is presented, with detailed description of two important classes: magnetic
resonant tunnel structures and bipolar magnetic diodes and transistors. In most
cases the presentation is of tutorial style, introducing the essential
theoretical formalism at an accessible level, with case-study-like
illustrations of actual experimental results, as well as with brief reviews of
relevant recent achievements in the field.Comment: tutorial review; 342 pages, 132 figure

It will achieve this by continuously monitoring and updating the ephemerides of Ariel candidates, in order to produce a consistent catalog of reliable and precise ephemerides.
