    Micro‐ornamentation patterns in different areas of the epidermis in the gecko Tarentola mauritanica reflect variations in the accumulation of corneous material in Oberhautchen cells

    Micro-ornamentations characterize the surface of scales in lepidosaurians and are summarized in four main patterns, i.e., spi- nulated, lamellated, lamellate-dentate, and honeycomb, although variations of these patterns are present in different species. Although geckos are known to possess a spinulated pattern derived from the Oberhautchen layer, also other pattern variations of the spinulated micro-ornamentation are present such as those indicated as dendritic ramification, corneous belts, and small bare patches. The present study mainly describes the variation of micro-ornamentations present in scales of different skin regions in the Mediterranean gecko Tarentula mauritanica using scannig and transmission electron microscopy. The study reports that the accumulation of corneous material in Oberhautchen cells is not homogenous in different areas of body scales and, when mature, this process gives rise to different sculpturing on the epidermal surface generating not only spinulae but also transitional zones leading to the other main patterns. It is hypothesized that spinulae formation derives from the verti- cal and lateral symmetric growth of tubercolate, non-overlapped scales of geckos. Sparse areas also result smooth or with serpentine-ridges likely revealing the beta-layer located underneath and merged with the Oberhautchen. The eco-functional role of this variable micro-ornamentation in the skin of lizards however remains largely speculative

    Cryopreservation of Ovarian Tissue in Pediatric Patients

    Cancer treatments improve the survival rate of children and adolescents; however chemo- and radiotherapy result in gonadal damage leading to acute ovarian failure and sterility. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation allows long-term storage of primordial follicles and represents the only possibility of preserving the potential fertility in prepubertal girls. The aim of the present study is to describe our experience in ovarian tissue cryopreservation in 45 pediatric patients. The number of follicles per square millimeter of the overall section area and follicle quality were evaluated histologically. A strong negative correlation was found between age and follicular density in patients both prior to and after chemotherapy (P < 0.0001). Damage in follicular quality, that is, increased oocyte vacuolization and detachment of the oocyte from granulosa cells, was found after chemotherapy. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation, preferably performed before initiation of chemotherapy, should be offered to pediatric patients, including prepubertal girls, at risk of sterility

    Magnetic Excitations in NpCoGa5

    We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on NpCoGa5_{5}, an isostructural analogue of the PuCoGa5_{5} superconductor. Two energy scales characterize the magnetic response in the antiferromagnetic phase. One is related to a non-dispersive excitation between two crystal field levels. The other at lower energies corresponds to dispersive fluctuations emanating from the magnetic zone center. The fluctuations persist in the paramagnetic phase also, although weaker in intensity. This supports the possibility that magnetic fluctuations are present in PuCoGa5_{5}, where unconventional d-wave superconductivity is achieved in the absence of magnetic order.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    CH 3 GHz Observations of Molecular Clouds Along the Galactic Plane

    Spectra in the CH 2Π1/2^2\Pi_{1/2}, J=1/2, F=1-1 transition at 3335 MHz were obtained in three 5-point crosses centered on the Galactic plane at =\ell = 50\arcdeg, 100\arcdeg, and 110\arcdeg. The lines of sight traverse both Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) and local, smaller entities. This transition is a good tracer of low-density molecular gas and the line profiles are very similar to CO(1-0) data at nearly the same resolution. In addition, the CH 3335 MHz line can be used to calibrate the CO-H2_2 conversion factor (XCO_{\rm CO}) in low-density molecular gas. Although this technique underestimates XCO_{\rm CO} in GMCs, our results are within a factor of two of XCO_{\rm CO} values calibrated for GMCs by other techniques. The similarity of CH and CO line profiles, and that of XCO_{\rm CO} values derived from CH and more traditional techniques, implies that most of the molecular gas along the observed lines of sight is at relatively low densities (nn \le 103^3 cm3^{-3}).Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the AJ, revised after referee repor

    Dual inhibitory action of trazodone on dorsal raphe serotonergic neurons through 5-HT1A receptor partial agonism and &#945;1-adrenoceptor antagonism

    Trazodone is an antidepressant drug with considerable affinity for 5-HT1A receptors and α1-adrenoceptors for which the drug is competitive agonist and antagonist, respectively. In this study, we used cell-attached or whole-cell patch-clamp recordings to characterize the effects of trazodone at somatodendritic 5-HT1A receptors (5-HT1AARs) and α1-adrenoceptors of serotonergic neurons in rodent dorsal raphe slices. To reveal the effects of trazodone at α1-adrenoceptors, the baseline firing of 5-HT neurons was facilitated by applying the selective α1-adrenoceptor agonist phenylephrine at various concentrations. In the absence of phenylephrine, trazodone (1-10 μM) concentration-dependently silenced neurons through activation of 5-HT1AARs. The effect was fully antagonized by the selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonist Way-100635. With 5-HT1A receptors blocked by Way-100635, trazodone (1-10 μM) concentration-dependently inhibited neuron firing facilitated by 1 μM phenylephrine. Parallel rightward shift of dose-response curves for trazodone recorded in higher phenylephrine concentrations (10-100 μM) indicated competitive antagonism at α1-adrenoceptors. Both effects of trazodone were also observed in slices from Tph2-/- mice that lack synthesis of brain serotonin, showing that the activation of 5-HT1AARs was not mediated by endogenous serotonin. In whole-cell recordings, trazodone activated 5-HT1AAR-coupled G protein-activated inwardly-rectifying (GIRK) channel conductance with weak partial agonist efficacy (~35%) compared to that of the full agonist 5-CT. Collectively our data show that trazodone, at concentrations relevant to its clinical effects, exerts weak partial agonism at 5-HT1AARs and disfacilitation of firing through α1-adrenoceptor antagonism. These two actions converge in inhibiting dorsal raphe serotonergic neuron activity, albeit with varying contribution depending on the intensity of α1-adrenoceptor stimulation

    Insecticide application is the mainway to control Diaphorina citri. However, it causes environmental contamination, has a negative impact on beneficial organisms and leads to psyllid resistance. The essential oil of Piper aduncum has low toxicity towards the environment and contains dillapiol, which has proven to be effective against several crop pests. Here, we studied its efficacy against nymphs and adults of D. citri under laboratory conditions.
