The Traveler and His Diary: Couto de Magalhães and Roger Casement

The aim of this article is to reflect upon the process of constructionof the travel narrative as a counterpoint to the traveler’s experience. Itfocuses the travels of two public figures, General Couto de Magalhães andthe Irish nationalist Roger Casement. Their intimate diaries written duringtheir travels are analysed from a critical perspective that considers thetensions between the actual travel experience and its subsequent publishedaccount. The issues addressed along this text are genre, sexuality, narrativeconstruction and travel literature

This article analyzes “Álbum”, a notebook of intimate writings by Maria Firmina dos Reis, with the aim of investigating the construction of her individuality and subjectivity as a black woman and novelist from Maranhão, in the mid-19th century. With this in mind, the article establishes a theoretical framework, reconstructs her social context, and presents her intimate reflections extracted from “Álbum”.Este artigo se centra na análise de “Álbum”, caderno de escritos íntimos de Maria Firmina dos Reis, em busca de refletir sobre a construção da individualidade e subjetividade de uma mulher negra, romancista, em meados do século XIX, no Maranhão. Para tal, o artigo propõe um recorte teórico, reconstitui o contexto social da romancista e apresenta trechos de suas reflexões privadas constantes de seu “Álbum”

Trabalho, compensação e crime: estratégias e contra-estratégias

Baseado em processos criminais de escravos da Província de São Paulo - especificamente referentes aos municípios de Campinas e Taubaté - entre 1830 e 1888, este artigo discute as lutas e resistências do escravo frente às transformações sofridas pelo sistema escravista no decorrer deste período.Às estratégias senhoriais, que procuravam compatibilizar as contingências da produção agrícola exportadora com o regime escravista que declinava, os escravos respondiam com contra-estratégias, que buscavam defender tradicionais espaços de autonomia e sobrevivência. Based on trial records of slave crimes in Campinas and Taubate Counties, Province of São Paulo, between 1830 and 1888, this article discusses the struggles and resistance ofslaves in the face of transformations within the system of slavery during this period.
