Work-related psychological health among clergywomen in Australia

    Get PDF
Drawing on the classic model of balanced affect, the Francis Burnout Inventory conceptualises good work-related psychological health among clergy in terms of negative affect being balanced by positive affect. This paper sets out to explore the relationship between work-related psychological health and psychological type (as assessed by the Francis Psychological-Type Scales) among a sample of 212 Australian clergywomen who completed the National Church Life Survey Form L in 2006. The data supported the internal consistency reliability of the Francis Burnout Inventory and Francis Psychological-Type Scales and found that work-related psychological health was positively related to extraversion and sensing

Depth from Defocus via Active Quasi-random Point Projections

    Get PDF
Depth sensing has many practical applications in vision-relatedtasks. While many different depth measurement techniques existand depth camera technologies are constantly being advanced, activedepth sensing still rely on specialized hardware that are highlycomplex and costly. Motivated by this, we present a novel techniquefor inferring depth measurements via depth from defocus usingactive quasi-random point projection patterns. A quasi-randompoint projection pattern is projected onto the scene of interest, andeach projection point in the image captured by a camera is analysedusing a calibration model to estimate the depth at that point. The proposed method has a relatively simple setup, consisting of acamera and a projector, and enables depth inference from a singlecapture. Furthermore, the use of a quasi-random projection patterncan allow us to leverage compressive sensing theory to producefull depth maps in future applications. Experimental resultsshow the proposed system has strong potential for enabling activedepth sensing in a simple, efficient manner

    Interface-tuned epoxy/clay nanocomposites

Though interface has been known for a critical role in determining the properties of conventional composites, its role in polymer nanocomposites is still fragmented and in its infancy. This study synthesized a series of epoxy/clay nanocomposites with different interface strength by using three types of modiïŹers: ethanolamine (denoted ETH), Jeffamineïżœ M2070 (M27) and Jeffamineïżœ XTJ502 (XTJ). XTJ created a strong interface between clay layers and matrix because it bridged the layers with matrix by a chemical reaction as proved by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; M27 produced an interme-diate interface strength due to the molecular entanglement between grafted M27 chains and matrix molecules; the interface made by ETH was weak because neither chemical bridging nor molecular entanglement was involved. The studies of mechanical and thermal properties and morphology at a wide range of magniïŹcation show that the strong interface promoted the highest level of exfoliation and dispersion of clay layers, and achieved the most increment in Young’s modulus, fracture toughness and glass transition temperature (Tg) of matrix. With w1.3 wt% clay, the critical strain energy release rate G1c of neat epoxy improved from 179.0 to 384.7 J/m, 115% improvement and Tg enhanced from 93.7 to 99.

Active nuclear import of the deacetylase Sirtuin-2 is controlled by its C-terminus and importins

The NAD-dependent deacetylase Sirtuin-2 (SIRT2) functions in diverse cellular processes including the cell cycle, metabolism, and has important roles in tumorigenesis and bacterial infection. SIRT2 predominantly resides in the cytoplasm but can also function in the nucleus. Consequently, SIRT2 localisation and its interacting partners may greatly impact its function and need to be defined more clearly. In this study we used mass spectrometry to determine the interactomes of SIRT2 in whole cells and in specific cellular fractions; cytoplasm, nucleus and chromatin. Using this approach, we identified novel interacting partners of SIRT2. These included a number of proteins that function in nuclear import. We show that multiple importins interact with and contribute to the basal nuclear shuttling of SIRT2 and that one of these, IPO7 is required for SIRT2 mediated H3K18 deacetylation in response to bacterial infection. Furthermore, we reveal that the unstructured C-terminus of SIRT2 negatively regulates importin-binding and nuclear transport. This study demonstrates that SIRT2 is actively transported into the nucleus via a process regulated by its C-terminus and provides a resource of SIRT2 interacting partners

Does Every Quasar Harbor A Blazar?

Assuming there is a blazar type continuum in every radio-loud quasar, we find that the free-free heating due to the beamed infrared continuum can greatly enhance collisionally excited lines, and thus explain the stronger CIV λ\lambda1549 line emission observed in radio loud quasars. We further predict that the CIV line should show variability {\it not} associated with observed continuum or Lyα\alpha variability.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; to appear in Astrophys. J. Let

Non-equilibrium oxidation states of zirconium during early stages of metal oxidation

    Get PDF
The chemical state of Zr during the initial, self-limiting stage of oxidation on single crystal zirconium (0001), with oxide thickness on the order of 1 nm, was probed by synchrotron x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Quantitative analysis of the Zr 3d spectrum by the spectrum reconstruction method demonstrated the formation of Zr[superscript 1+], Zr[superscript 2+], and Zr[superscript 3+] as non-equilibrium oxidation states, in addition to Zr[superscript 4+] in the stoichiometric ZrO2. This finding resolves the long-debated question of whether it is possible to form any valence states between Zr[superscript 0] and Zr[superscript 4+] at the metal-oxide interface. The presence of local strong electric fields and the minimization of interfacial energy are assessed and demonstrated as mechanisms that can drive the formation of these non-equilibrium valence states of Zr.United States.
