    The metric on the moduli space of one abelian Higgs vortex on a surface has a natural geometrical evolution as the Bradlow parameter, which determines the vortex size, varies.     Serovar distribution of a DNA sequence involved in the antigenic relationship between Leptospira and equine cornea

    BACKGROUND: Horses infected with Leptospira present several clinical disorders, one of them being recurrent uveitis. A common endpoint of equine recurrent uveitis is blindness. Serovar pomona has often been incriminated, although others have also been reported. An antigenic relationship between this bacterium and equine cornea has been described in previous studies. A leptospiral DNA fragment that encodes cross-reacting epitopes was previously cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. RESULTS: A region of that DNA fragment was subcloned and sequenced. Samples of leptospiral DNA from several sources were analysed by PCR with two primer pairs designed to amplify that region. Reference strains from serovars canicola, icterohaemorrhagiae, pomona, pyrogenes, wolffi, bataviae, sentot, hebdomadis and hardjo rendered products of the expected sizes with both pairs of primers. The specific DNA region was also amplified from isolates from Argentina belonging to serogroups Canicola and Pomona. Both L. biflexa serovar patoc and L. borgpetersenii serovar tarassovi rendered a negative result. CONCLUSIONS: The DNA sequence related to the antigen mimicry with equine cornea was not exclusively found in serovar pomona as it was also detected in several strains of Leptospira belonging to different serovars. The results obtained with L. biflexa serovar patoc strain Patoc I and L. borgpetersenii serovar tarassovi strain Perepelicin suggest that this sequence is not present in these strains, which belong to different genomospecies than those which gave positive results. This is an interesting finding since L. biflexa comprises nonpathogenic strains and serovar tarassovi has not been associated clinically with equine uveitis

    Strategic alliance in energy sector & implications for economic growth and technical efficiency: The case of petrobras and galp

    This study stemmed from the lack of evidence and uncertainties regarding the economic and political effects of a strategic alliance between leading oil companies like Petrobras and Galp on their host economies. This paper investigates whether public and private corporations in the energy sector can influence the economic growth of their respective countries. A Panel data analysis was performed by employing quarterly data from (2006-2013). We also used Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to measure the technical efficiency (TE) effect of the alliance on the performance of both companies from 1999 to 2012. It was found the exploration and export of oil and gas do not play a significant role in output growth of the home economy and that exploration activities were inflationary, destabilising and inimical to growth, at least in the short-run. On another positive side, both companies showed increased technical efficiencies in the chosen time period. Petrobras enjoyed TE on average of 90% in the variables studied whereas Galp showed an average TE of 70%. These results reflect the corporate strategies of both firms, which focussed on achieving profitable and sustained growth and enhancing their efficiencies in their collective and individual activities

    The main purpose of this report is to give a brief overview about the information sources utilized by freshmen university students in their research works. The document reports the case of Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, and the study is based on the analysis of the results of the fourth version of a contest aimed at gathering the best research reports written by the students of the subject of Técnicas de Investigación Documental. This analysis is mainly focused on the sources used and the way they were quoted or referenced. Results are in accordance with those produced by other international investigations, because it is observed, e. g. that students overestimate the information available on Internet

    The findings from a paper-based review of the joint participation of professors and librarians in the development of informational skills of university students are described in this paper. Likewise, the differences regarding how both of them recognize the concept of "informational competencies" are presented. For such research, a comprehensive review of the related literature was carried out and the retrieved documents published in relation to previously established topics, especially in Mexico and Latin America, were analyzed too. The literature highlights the collaboration professor-librarian and its impact in student's learning; nonetheless, one factor stands out in the results of the research, the papers published by faculty members reporting their experiences on the topic are minimum, librarians are the big contributors. This study is framed in a research carried out for obtaining a Ph.D. degree

    The purpose of this document is to identify and describe the main elements to consider when evaluating a university's efforts in the development of information competencies of undergraduate students. Information competencies and their current importance in the context of competency-centered education are described. A review is made of a number of personal and corporate authors who for long time have expressed that information literacy programs and their evaluation should involve the entire institution. From the literature review and their experience as faculty members and librarians, the authors present a proposal of which elements should integrate a model that would assess the efforts of an institution and could be used by different universities, both in self-assessment exercises or in external evaluation processes

Método: Estudio descriptivo transversal realizado en la Escuela de Enfermería de la UB en estudiantes de Grado de Enfermería matriculados en las asignaturas prácticas de segundo curso (Estancias Clínicas I) y de tercer curso (Estancias Clínicas II) durante el 2013-2014 (N=78). Variables: sociodemográficas, laborales, de formación, clínicas y referidas a la evaluación del riesgo biológico percibido. Se utilizó un instrumento de elaboración propia y la escala EDRP-T. Análisis estadístico: descriptivo y univariante para detectar si habían diferencias entre la percepción de riesgo biológico de los ítems de la escala EDRP-T y las variables sociodemográficas. Resultados: Los estudiantes sin formación práctica previa (Estancias Clínicas I) tenían menor percepción de conocimiento y menor percepción de daño derivado del riesgo biológico con respecto a los estudiantes con formación práctica previa (Estancias Clínicas II), (p=0.05 y p=0.04 respectivamente). Se detectó menor percepción del riesgo biológico en los estudiantes con experiencia laboral previa. Conclusión: La formación práctica y la experiencia laboral influyen en la percepción del riesgo biológico de los estudiantes de enfermería. Faltan estudios que relacionen la percepción de riesgo con el uso de las medidas de prevención durante su formación práctica y los accidentes de tipo biológicos sufridos

    mHealth to improve experience, adherence to pharmacological treatment, and positive mental health in patients diagnosed with femur fractures: protocol for a quasi-experimental study

    Background: Considering the prognosis of femur fractures worldwide, the ageing of our society, and the problems in adherence to treatment found in these patients, it is believed that mobile health can have a positive impact on the process and quality of care. Objective: We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of a pharmacological educational nurse intervention with Myplan app with regard to knowledge, adherence to pharmacological treatment, and positive mental health of patients with femur fractures. Methods: A nonrandomized, quasi-experimental study will be carried out with a pretest-posttest control group. It will include 278 older patients diagnosed with femur fractures, with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 15 and access to mobile devices. Patients with psychological pathologies and cognitive impairment or patients treated in isolation will be excluded. Study variables are as follows: sociodemographic variables (AdHoc Form), patient experience (Patient Experience Questionnaire-15), adherence to pharmacological treatment (Morisky-Green questionnaire), and positive mental health (Positive Mental Health questionnaire). The measurements will be taken 24 hours after admission, upon discharge, and 25 days after discharge. Results: Enrollment commenced in October 2022. Data collection will be completed in April 2023. Conclusions: The results of this study will offer evidence of the effectiveness of a pharmacological educational nurse intervention by means of a free smartphone app. If its efficacy is demonstrated and the results are acceptable, it could mean an improvement in the care of patients with femur fractures, and this technology could be used to guide other training interventions in patients with other pathologies
