What is an Analogue for the Semantic Web and Why is Having One Important?

This paper postulates that for the Semantic Web to grow and gain input from fields that will surely benefit it, it needs to develop an analogue that will help people not only understand what it is, but what the potential opportunities are that are enabled by these new protocols. The model proposed in the paper takes the way that Web interaction has been framed as a baseline to inform a similar analogue for the Semantic Web. While the Web has been represented as a Page + Links, the paper presents the argument that the Semantic Web can be conceptualized as a Notebook + Memex. The argument considers how this model also presents new challenges for fundamental human interaction with computing, and that hypertext models have much to contribute to this new understanding for distributed information systems

Bisimulation, Logic and Reachability Analysis for Markovian Systems

In the recent years, there have been a large amount of investigations on safety verification of uncertain continuous systems. In engineering and applied mathematics, this verification is called stochastic reachability analysis, while in computer science this is called probabilistic model checking (PMC). In the context of this work, we consider the two terms interchangeable. It is worthy to note that PMC has been mostly considered for discrete systems. Therefore, there is an issue of improving the application of computer science techniques in the formal verification of continuous stochastic systems. We present a new probabilistic logic of model theoretic nature. The terms of this logic express reachability properties and the logic formulas express statistical properties of terms. Moreover, we show that this logic characterizes a bisimulation relation for continuous time continuous space Markov processes. For this logic we define a new semantics using state space symmetries. This is a recent concept that was successfully used in model checking. Using this semantics, we prove a full abstraction result. Furthermore, we prove a result that can be used in model checking, namely that the bisimulation preserves the probabilities of the reachable sets

Road traffic pollution monitoring and modelling tools and the UK national air quality strategy.

This paper provides an assessment of the tools required to fulfil the air quality management role now expected of local authorities within the UK. The use of a range of pollution monitoring tools in assessing air quality is discussed and illustrated with evidence from a number of previous studies of urban background and roadside pollution monitoring in Leicester. A number of approaches to pollution modelling currently available for deployment are examined. Subsequently, the modelling and monitoring tools are assessed against the requirements of Local Authorities establishing Air Quality Management Areas. Whilst the paper examines UK based policy, the study is of wider international interest

An analytical investigation of the physical dimensions of natural convection flow on a vertical heated plate

Analytical results of the boundary layer of natural convection air flow on a vertical heated plate are presented for both isothermal and constant heat flux plates. We investigate the effects of the heat flux and the temperature of the plate on the development of the physical boundary layer along the plate. The ranges of temperature and heat flux examined are 10°C ≤ T ≤ 100°C and 50 ≤ qP ≤ 600 (w/m2) respectively. The results show that the variation in the plate temperature has a significant effect on the transition of air on the isothermal plate, and the difference between the temperature of air and plate has more effect on the transition especially when TP ≤ 60°C. In addition, the temperature of the flow on the constant heat flux plate shows a little effect on the transition, where the transition mostly depends on the heat flux. At qP = 220 (w/m2) and Ta=29°C with declining the temperature of air by 69%, the critical height declines by 3.8%. The analytical results are compared with different previous experimental studies for different operation conditions, where a satisfactory agreement is achieved

The worst place on earth to be a woman: violence against Yemeni women in peace and war

In 2011, in common with women in other Arab states, Yemeni women dared to raise their voices in the public sphere and to call for change. Evidence of their revolutionary engagement throws into question assumptions of female powerlessness and silencing in Muslim societies and, by exploring multiple forms of violence against women, my article asks whether and to what extent Yemeni women’s behaviour during the revolution and afterwards was a departure from their previous roles. It will also reflect on more far-reaching processes of change in Yemeni society by asking whether the radical upheaval of 2011 may be capable, in the longer term, of challenging entrenched patriarchal structures in order to create a more genuinely inclusive citizenship. In the article, I contrast Yemeni women’s activism and their presence in public spaces with the various forms of violence that limit their mobility and choices. I will argue that, although they have been able to utilize the limited tools at their disposal in order to demand their rights as citizens, these rights are by no means guaranteed; they are threatened by the violence of tradition and, more recently, the violence of conflict and emergenc
