    Cultivation arrangements and the cost efficiency of rice farming in Taiwan

    In this paper, a switching regression model is developed to analyze farmers' choice behavior and cost efficiency in field plowing arrangement in Taiwan. We find that the decision on the choice of plowing arrangement is determined by a cost comparison between self-plowing and hired-service, and other non-cost considerations, such as the availability of family labor and machinery., education level, non-farm income, age, and regional effects, Across a spectrum of fanner characteristics, empirical results indicate a potentially substantial cost-savings by hiring service for field plowing than by self-plowing. Self-plowing farmers also subject to a significant level of cost inefficiency

    An efficient composite growing N-doped TiO2 on multi-walled carbon nanotubes through sol-gel process

    High-activity, visible-light-driven photocatalysts were prepared by forming N-doped TiO2 on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The use of MWCNTs as the support in a N-doped TiO2 system favored electron trapping, because the recombination process could be retarded, thus promoting photocatalytic activity. The prepared photocatalysts were systematically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunaure-Emmett-Teller (BET) spectroscopy, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis/DRS). The results indicated that the N-doped TiO2 coated on MWCNTs improved the surface area and slightly modified the optical properties of the composite. The activities of the photocatalysts were probed by photodegradation of methanol in the presence of visible light irradiation. The experimental results revealed that the strong interphase linkage between the MWCNTs and the N-doped TiO2 played a significant role in improving photocatalytic activity. However, the mechanical process for MWCNT-TiO2-x N (x) mixtures showed lower activity than just pure N-doped TiO2. In this study, N-doped TiO2 precursors coated with pretreated MWCNTs during a sol-gel process could effectively form a MWCNT-TiO2-x N (x) composite. The composite showed excellent activity and effectively enhanced the efficiency of N-doped TiO2 under the visible light region

    Evaluating the Paradox of Strength and Ductility in Ultrafine-Grained Oxygen-free Copper Processed by ECAP at Room Temperature

    Oxygen-free copper of >99.95% purity was processed by equal-channel angular pressing at room temperature (RT) for up to 24 passes and then pulled to failure at RT using strain rates from 10-4 to 10-2 s-1. The results show that the microstrain increases with strain at the lower numbers of passes but decreases between 16 and 24 passes. Similar trends were found also for the dislocation density, the Vickers microhardness and the values of the measured yield stresses in tensile testing. X-ray diffraction measurements showed a minor increase in the crystallite size at the high strain imposed by processing through 24 passes. These results demonstrate the occurrence of dynamic recovery at the highest strain. In tensile testing at a strain rate of 10-3 s-1 the results gave a yield stress of ~391 MPa and an elongation to failure of 52% which is consistent with an earlier report using Cu of much higher purity but not consistent with an earlier report using Cu of the same purity

    Activation of the Wnt Signaling Pathway: A Molecular Mechanism for Lithium Action

    AbstractGlycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β/zeste-white-3/shaggy) is a negative regulator of the wnt signaling pathway which plays a central role in the development of invertebrates and vertebrates; loss of function and dominant negative mutations in GSK-3β lead to activation of the wnt pathway inDrosophilaandXenopus.We now provide evidence that lithium activates downstream components of the wnt signaling pathwayin vivo,leading to accumulation of β-catenin protein. Our data indicate that this activation of the wnt pathway is a consequence of inhibition of GSK-3β by lithium. Using a novel assay for GSK-3β in oocytes, we show that lithium inhibits GSK-3β from species as diverse asDictyostelium discoideumandXenopus laevis,providing a biochemical mechanism for the action of lithium on the development of these organisms. Lithium treatment also leads to activation of an AP-1–luciferase reporter inXenopusembryos, consistent with previous observations that GSK-3β inhibits c-jun activity. Activation of the wnt pathway with a dominant negative form of GSK-3β is inhibited by myo-inositol, similar to the previously described effect of coinjecting myo-inositol with lithium. The mechanism by which myo-inositol inhibits both dominant negative GSK-3β and lithium remains uncertain

    The stability of oxygen-free copper processed by high-pressure torsion after room temperature storage for 12 months.

    Ultrafine-grained copper samples produced by high-pressure torsion were stored at room temperature for 12 months to investigate microstructural stability and the self-annealing phenomena. The results show that samples processed by low numbers of turns exhibit less thermal stability after storage for 12 months by comparison with samples processed by high numbers of turns. A significant decrease in the hardness was recorded near the edges of the discs processed by 1/4, 1/2 and 1 turn due to recrystallization and grain growth whereas a minor drop in hardness values was observed in the samples processed by 3, 5 and 10 turns. This drop in hardness was related to a recovery mechanism

    B→KB\to K Transition Form Factor up to O(1/mb2){\cal O}(1/m^2_b) within the kTk_T Factorization Approach

    In the paper, we apply the kTk_T factorization approach to deal with the B→KB\to K transition form factor F+,0B→K(q2)F^{B\to K}_{+,0}(q^2) in the large recoil regions. The B-meson wave functions ΨB\Psi_B and ΨˉB\bar\Psi_B that include the three-particle Fock states' contributions are adopted to give a consistent PQCD analysis of the form factor up to O(1/mb2){\cal O} (1/m^2_b). It has been found that both the wave functions ΨB\Psi_B and ΨˉB\bar\Psi_B can give sizable contributions to the form factor and should be kept for a better understanding of the BB meson decays. Then the contributions from different twist structures of the kaon wavefunction are discussed, including the SUf(3)SU_f(3)-breaking effects. A sizable contribution from the twist-3 wave function Ψp\Psi_p is found, whose model dependence is discussed by taking two group of parameters that are determined by different distribution amplitude moments obtained in the literature. It is also shown that F+,0B→K(0)=0.30±0.04F^{B\to K}_{+,0}(0)=0.30\pm0.04 and [F+,0B→K(0)/F+,0B→π(0)]=1.13±0.02[F^{B\to K}_{+,0}(0)/F^{B\to \pi}_{+,0}(0)]=1.13\pm0.02, which are more reasonable and consistent with the light-cone sum rule results in the large recoil regions.Comment: 22 pages and 6 figure

    HuR binding to AU-rich elements present in the 3 ' untranslated region of Classical swine fever virus

    Background: Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is the member of the genus Pestivirus under the family Flaviviridae. The 5' untranslated region (UTR) of CSFV contains the IRES, which is a highly structured element that recruits the translation machinery. The 3' UTR is usually the recognition site of the viral replicase to initiate minus-strand RNA synthesis. Adenosine-uridine rich elements (ARE) are instability determinants present in the 3' UTR of short-lived mRNAs. However, the presence of AREs in the 3' UTR of CSFV conserved in all known strains has never been reported. This study inspects a possible role of the ARE in the 3' UTR of CSFV. Results: Using RNA pull-down and LC/MS/MS assays, this study identified at least 32 possible host factors derived from the cytoplasmic extracts of PK-15 cells that bind to the CSFV 3' UTR, one of which is HuR. HuR is known to bind the AREs and protect the mRNA from degradation. Using recombinant GST-HuR, this study demonstrates that HuR binds to the ARE present in the 3' UTR of CSFV in vitro and that the binding ability is conserved in strains irrespective of virulence. Conclusions: This study identified one of the CSFV 3' UTR binding proteins HuR is specifically binding to in the ARE region

    UV and X-Ray Monitoring of AG Draconis During the 1994/1995 Outbursts

    The recent 1994-1995 active phase of AG Draconis has given us for the first time the opportunity to follow the full X-ray behaviour of a symbiotic star during two successive outbursts and to compare with its quiescence X-ray emission. With \ros observations we have discovered a remarkable decrease of the X-ray flux during both optical maxima, followed by a gradual recovering to the pre-outburst flux. In the UV the events were characterized by a large increase of the emission line and continuum fluxes, comparable to the behaviour of AG Dra during the 1980-81 active phase. The anticorrelation of X-ray/UV flux and optical brightness evolution is shown to very likely be due to a temperature decrease of the hot component. Such a temperature decrease could be produced by an increased mass transfer to the burning compact object, causing it to slowly expand to about twice its original size.Comment: 12 pages postscript incl. figures, Proc. of Workshop on Supersoft X-Ray Sources, to appear in Lecture Notes in Physics vol. 472 (1996
