    Catch assessment of indigenous and exotic carp species of Nasti baor

    An investigation on length-weight relationship, length-frequency distribution, catch per unit of effort (CPUE) and stocking and harvesting status of three Indian major carps: rohu Labeo rohita, catla Catla catla and mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala and three exotic carps: silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella) and common carp Cyprinus carpio was carried out in Nasti baor (oxbow lake) for the harvesting season from August to December 1995. The length-weight relationship for six carp species was established for the harvesting months of November and December 1995. The b values for different species respectively for the months of November and December were 2.95 and 2.58 for rohu, 3.06 and 2.98 for catla, 2,84 and 2.90 for mrigal, 2.75 and 2.60 for silver carp, 2.51 and 1.97 for grass carp and 2.38 and 2.50 for common carp. In CPUE study, the CPUE was 0.58 kg/ha/hr while the catch per gear was 0.08 kg/ha/hr/purse-seine. The recovery percentage of mrigal was highest (63.57%) and it was lowest (16.81%) in case of silver carp. The density of submerged macrophytes (Hydrilla, Utricularia, Ceratophyllum and Vallisneria) was highest (4.39 kg/sqm) in November and was lowest (0.76 kg/sqm) in September

    Disease problems in shrimp sector in Khulna district of Bangladesh: a question of sustainability

    Disease is the main restraining factor for the development of shrimp sector in Bangladesh. Both brackish water shrimp bagda (Penaeus monodon) and freshwater prawn golda, (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) farming in Bangladesh have been facing disease problem. A study on disease outbreak in both brackish water and freshwater small-scale shrimp farms (gher) in Khulna district was carried out through interviewing randomly selected 3-5% of shrimp farmers with a structured questionnaire during March to December, 2002. The study showed that 97% bagda farming ghers and 80% golda farming ghers were affected by disease. White spot disease was the severe disease for bagda, whereas, antenna rot was the main disease for freshwater prawn. Change of water and liming were carried out as control measures of disease for bagda shrimp farming, while it was only liming for golda farming. A small number of shrimp farmers (15%) used chemicals for treatment of shrimp diseases. Development of suitable farming technology to prevent disease contamination and innovation of proper treatments for diseases are required to overcome the disease problems for sustainable shrimp farming in Bangladesh

    Physiological parameters and yield differ in rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars with variable water management systems

    Yield reduction of rice is a severe problem due to the advent of increasing water scarcity and efficiency is relatively low. Physiological attributes and yield performance of high yielding (HYV) rice cultivars need to be assessed by minimizing water loss. Therefore, a glasshouse experiment was conducted in Bangladesh to investigate the impact of cultivars and water management on growth dynamics, biomass production, and yield and water productivity. Ten HYV boro (dry season irrigated) rice cultivars along with fivewater management systems were included in the study. The study revealed that cultivars Binadhan-10 had higher value of leaf area index (LAI), root dry weight along with moderate panicle length. Accordingly, the cultivar Binadhan-10 had a higher yield than all other cultivars because of the highest total dry matter (TDM), number of effective tillers hill-1, and number of grains panicle-1. Growth, TDM, and yield were increased with water application up to 8 DAD after which these factors declined with increasing water stress at 10 DAD. The crop grown at CS condition did not increase the yield, rather caused the wastage of irrigation water. The water productivity was the highest (0.252 t ha-1cm-1) in 10 DAD treatments, obviously due to minimum water use but highest yield was observed in 8 DAD because of optimum use of water and non stress condition. Therefore, the present study was useful in the screening of the most efficient cultivars, which could be strongly recommended to rice growers to improve crop yield and reduce the use of water

    Synthesis of ZIF-94 from Recycled Mother Liquors: Study of the Influence of Its Loading on Postcombustion CO2 Capture with Pebax Based Mixed Matrix Membranes

    Global energy demand is met in large part, by burning of fossil fuels, which is causing global warming. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as fillers are an interesting alternative for capturing post combustion CO2 which would make the energy sector sustainable. This research is focused on the synthesis of MOF ZIF-94 from the recycling of its mother liquors and the incorporation of synthesized MOF into a Pebax MH 1657 for MMM fabrication. The pH and the temperature of ZIF-94 synthesis are modified and monitored and this results in various nanoparticle diameters (average particle size in the range of 41 ± 8–180 ± 73 nm). Incorporation of ZIF-94 significantly improves the performance of the bare Pebax MH 1657 membrane. The maximum CO2/N2 selectivity and CO2 permeability are obtained for 10 wt% ZIF-94 loading in 9 wt% (polymer concentration in 70/30 (v/v) ethanol/water solution) Pebax MH 1657 matrix being 36 ± 7 (71% increment compared to bare membrane) and 137 ± 31 Barrer (80% improvement), respectively. © 2021 The Authors.     Experimental Study on Ultimate Strength of Steel Tube Column Filled with Reactive Powder Concrete

    Composite concrete Filled Tubular Steel (CFT) members, which have excellent deformability due to the well-known confined and constrained interaction between steel tube and concrete, have largely been utilized as bridge piers or columns in high-rise buildings, resulting in increased strength and decreased column size. This study examined the experimental performance of steel tube columns filled with reactive powder concrete (RPC) under axial compression. Three sets of columns were used in the experiment, each with variations in shape (square, rectangular, and circular), length-to-diameter ratio, and compressive strength of the RPC. The first set consisted of five columns, while the second and third sets each had seven columns with three different lengths (750 mm, 600 mm, and 450 mm) and two different compressive strengths (54 and 92 MPa). A new numerical model was developed to calculate the ultimate failure load of the columns by considering factors such as the yield strength of steel, the compressive strength of concrete, the column shape, and the ratio of concrete to steel. This model was validated by comparing the results obtained from the experiments to those predicted by the model, as well as by designing equations from various codes. The results showed that the proposed numerical model accurately predicted the ultimate failure load for columns filled with different types of concrete, especially for RPC, while maintaining conservatism compared to the ACI, AISC, and EN codes equations. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2023-09-06-04 Full Text: PD

    Strip planting decreases nitrogen fertilizer requirements while retention of more residue increases them in a rice - wheat - mungbean sequence on a subtropical floodplain soil

    Conservation agriculture (CA) has not been well developed for intensively cultivated (2-3 crops yr-1) rice- based cropping systems which produce large amounts of crop residues annually. Thus, we examined the effects of two crop establishment systems (minimum soil disturbance by strip planting (SP) or conventional tillage (CT)), two residue retention levels (low and high) and five N rates (60, 80, 100, 120 & 140% of the recommended N fertilizer doses (RFD) on nine consecutive crops on an Aeric Haplaquept under rice-wheat- mungbean sequence. Rice yields were comparable between the crop establishment types but system yields were significantly higher with SP in two out of three years compare to CT. Increased residue retention did not significantly influence rice yield but positively influenced system yields. No substantial differences in optimum N rate was estimated between CT and SP for 90% of maximum yield goal (MYG) for all the three years but substantially decreased in SP compared to CT in two out of three years for 95 and 99% of MYG. The N fertilizer requirement was 6-22% higher with high residue retention compared to low residue retention plots for all the three yield goal levels. High residue retention also increased soil organic carbon (SOC) at 0- 6 cm depth in both tillage treatments. In conclusion, introducing CA did not alter the N fertilizer requirements of rice for 90% of MYG but reduced the requirement for 95 and 99% of MYG compared to CT. However, there was evidence that the retained crop residue immobilized N and increased the fertilizer N requirement

    Eating habits and lifestyle during covid-19 lockdown in the united arab emirates: A cross-sectional study

The coronavirus disease is still spreading in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with subsequent lockdowns and social distancing measures being enforced by the government. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the lockdown on eating habits and lifestyle behaviors among residents of the UAE. A cross-sectional study among adults in the UAE was conducted using an online questionnaire between April and May 2020. A total of 1012 subjects participated in the study. During the pandemic, 31% reported weight gain and 72.2% had less than eight cups of water per day. Furthermore, the dietary habits of the participants were distanced from the Mediterranean diet principles and closer to “unhealthy” dietary patterns. Moreover, 38.5% did not engage in physical activity and 36.2% spent over five hours per day on screens for entertainment. A significantly higher percentage of participants reported physical exhaustion, emotional exhaustion, irritability, and tension “all the time” during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic (p \u3c 0.001). Sleep disturbances were prevalent among 60.8% of the participants during the pandemic. Although lockdowns are an important safety measure to protect public health, results indicate that they might cause a variety of lifestyle changes, physical inactivity, and psychological problems among adults in the UAE

    Risk of mortality among inpatients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes: national data from Kuwait

    Introduction To investigate type 2 diabetes as a risk factor for COVID-19 death following hospital admission in Kuwait. Methods A retrospective cohort study using data from a central hospital that cared for all hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Kuwait. We investigated the association between type 2 diabetes, with COVID-19 mortality using multiply imputed logistic regression and calculated the population attributable fraction. Results A total of 5333 patients were admitted with COVID-19, of whom 244 died (4.6%). Diabetes prevalence was 24.8%, but 53.7% of those who died had diabetes. After adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity and other comorbidities, diabetes was associated with death (OR 1.70 [95% CI 1.23, 2.34]) and admission to the intensive care unit more than 3 days after initial admission (OR 1.78 [95% CI 1.17, 2.70]). Assuming causality, the population attributable fraction for type 2 diabetes in COVID-19 death was 19.6% (95% CI 10.8, 35.6). Conclusion Type 2 diabetes is a strong risk factor for COVID-19 death in the Middle East.
