Spin-Flavor Structure of Large N Baryons
The spin-flavor structure of large N baryons is described in the 1/N
expansion of QCD using quark operators. The complete set of quark operator
identities is obtained, and used to derive an operator reduction rule which
simplifies the 1/N expansion. The operator reduction rule is applied to the
axial currents, masses, magnetic moments and hyperon non-leptonic decay
amplitudes in the limit, to first order in breaking, and
without assuming symmetry. The connection between the Skyrme and quark
representations is discussed. An explicit formula is given for the quark model
operators in terms of the Skyrme model operators to all orders in for

Decays of Baryons --- Quark Model versus Large-
We study nonleptonic decays of the orbitally excited, \su6 \rep{70}-plet
baryons in order to test the hypothesis that the successes of the
nonrelativistic quark model have a natural explanation in the large- limit
of QCD. By working in a Hartree approximation, we isolate a specific set of
operators that contribute to the observed s- and d-wave decays in leading order
in . We fit our results to the current experimental decay data, and make
predictions for a number of allowed but unobserved modes. Our tentative
conclusion is that there is more to the nonrelativistic quark model of baryons

Excited Baryons in Large N_c QCD Revisited: The Resonance Picture Versus Single-Quark Excitations
We analyze excited baryon properties via a 1/N_c expansion from two
perspectives: as resonances in meson-nucleon scattering, and as single-quark
excitations in the context of a simple quark model. For both types of analysis
one can derive novel patterns of degeneracy that emerge as N_c --> \infty, and
that are shown to be compatible with one another. This helps justify the
single-quark excitation picture and may give some insight into its successes.
We also find that in the large N_c limit one of the S_{11} baryons does not
couple to the pi-N channel but couples to the eta-N channel. This is
empirically observed in the N(1535), which couples very weakly to the pi-N
channel and quite strongly to the eta-N channel. The comparatively strong
coupling of the N(1650) to the pi-N channel and weak coupling to eta-N channel
is also predicted. In the context of the simple quark model picture we
reproduce expressions for mixing angles that are accurate up to O(1/N_c)
corrections and are in good agreement with mixing angles extracted

Expansion for Excited Baryons
We derive consistency conditions which constrain the possible form of the
strong couplings of the excited baryons to the pions. The consistency
conditions follow from requiring the pion-excited baryon scattering amplitudes
to satisfy the large-N_c Witten counting rules and are analogous to consistency
conditions used by Dashen, Jenkins and Manohar and others for s-wave baryons.
The consistency conditions are explicitly solved, giving the most general
allowed form of the strong vertices for excited baryons in the large-N_c limit.
We show that the solutions to the large-N_c consistency conditions coincide
with the predictions of the nonrelativistic quark model for these states,
extending the results previously obtained for the s-wave baryons. The 1/N_c
corrections to these predictions are studied in the quark model with arbitrary

Effects of swirl on intermittency characteristics in non-premixed flames
Swirl effects on velocity, mixture fraction and temperature intermittency have been analysed
for turbulent methane flames using LES. The LES solves the filtered governing equations on
a structured Cartesian grid using a finite volume method, with turbulence and combustion
modelling based on the localised dynamic Smagorinsky and the steady laminar flamelet
models respectively. Probability density function (pdf) distributions demonstrate a Gaussian
shape closer to the centreline region of the flame and a delta function at the far radial
position. However, non-Gaussian pdfs are observed for velocity and mixture fraction on the
centreline in a region where centre jet precession occurs. Non-Gaussian behaviour is also
observed for the temperature pdfs close to the centreline region of the flame. Due to the
occurrence of recirculation zones, the variation from turbulent to non turbulent flow is more
rapid for the velocity than the mixture fraction and therefore indicates how rapidly turbulence
affects the molecular transport in these regions of the flame
Ab-initio density-functional lattice-dynamics studies of ice
We present the results of first-principles computational studies of the dynamical properties of hexagonal ice using both the ab-initio pseudopotential method and the full-potential augmented plane-wave method. Properties obtained using both the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the meta-GGA in density-functional theory are compared. The lattice-dynamical properties of the structures are obtained using a finite-difference evaluation of the dynamical matrix and force-constant matrix from atomic forces. Phonon dispersion is evaluated by the direct determination of the force-constant matrix in supercells derived from the primitive molecule unit cells with the assumption that force constants are zero beyond the second molecular nearest neighbors. The k-dependent phonon frequencies are then obtained from the force-constant matrix and dispersion relations, and the Brillouin-zone integrated density of states is evaluated. The importance of phonon dispersion in the various regions of the phonon spectra is then assessed and compared to existing neutron-scattering data. Frozen-phonon calculations are used to compare phonon frequencies evaluated in both the GGA and meta-GGA
Negative Parity 70-plet Baryon Masses in the 1/Nc Expansion
The masses of the negative parity SU(6) 70-plet baryons are analyzed in the
1/Nc expansion to order 1/Nc and to first order in SU(3) breaking. At this
level of precision there are twenty predictions. Among them there are the well
known Gell-Mann Okubo and equal spacing relations, and four new relations
involving SU(3) breaking splittings in different SU(3) multiplets. Although the
breaking of SU(6) symmetry occurs at zeroth order in 1/Nc, it turns out to be
small. The dominant source of the breaking is the hyperfine interaction which
is of order 1/Nc. The spin-orbit interaction, of zeroth order in 1/Nc, is
entirely fixed by the splitting between the singlet states Lambda(1405) and
Lambda(1520), and the spin-orbit puzzle is solved by the presence of other
zeroth order operators involving flavor exchange.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figure
Feline parvovirus seroprevalence is high in domestic cats from disease outbreak and non-outbreak regions in Australia
Multiple, epizootic outbreaks of feline panleukopenia (FPL) caused by feline parvovirus (FPV) occurred in eastern Australia between 2014 and 2018. Most affected cats were unvaccinated. We hypothesised that low population immunity was a major driver of re-emergent FPL. The aim of this study was to (i) determine the prevalence and predictors of seroprotective titres to FPV among shelter-housed and owned cats, and (ii) compare the prevalence of seroprotection between a region affected and unaffected by FPL outbreaks. FPV antibodies were detected by haemagglutination inhibition assay on sera from 523 cats and titres ≥1:40 were considered protective. Socioeconomic indices based on postcode and census data were included in the risk factor analysis. The prevalence of protective FPV antibody titres was high overall (94.3%), even though only 42% of cats were known to be vaccinated, and was not significantly different between outbreak and non-outbreak regions. On multivariable logistic regression analysis vaccinated cats were 29.94 times more likely to have protective FPV titres than cats not known to be vaccinated. Cats from postcodes of relatively less socioeconomic disadvantage were 5.93 times more likely to have protective FPV titres. The predictors identified for FPV seroprotective titres indicate targeted vaccination strategies in regions of socioeconomic disadvantage would be beneficial to increase population immunity. The critical level of vaccine coverage required to halt FPV transmission and prevent FPL outbreaks should be determined
Analog E1 transitions and isospin mixing
We investigate whether isospin mixing can be determined in a model-independent way from the relative strength of E1 transitions in mirror nuclei. The specific examples considered are the A=31 and A=35 mirror pairs, where a serious discrepancy between the strengths of 7/2--->5/2+ transitions in the respective mirror nuclei has been observed. A theoretical analysis of the problem suggests that it ought to be possible to disentangle the isospin mixing in the initial and final states given sufficient information on experimental matrix elements. With this in mind, we obtain a lifetime for the relevant 7/2- state in 31S using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. We then collate the available information on matrix elements to examine the level of isospin mixing for both A=31 and A=35 mirror pairs
Evidence for Shape Co-existence at medium spin in 76Rb
Four previously known rotational bands in 76Rb have been extended to moderate
spins using the Gammasphere and Microball gamma ray and charged particle
detector arrays and the 40Ca(40Ca,3pn) reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV.
The properties of two of the negative-parity bands can only readily be
interpreted in terms of the highly successful Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model
calculations if they have the same configuration in terms of the number of g9/2
particles, but they result from different nuclear shapes (one near-oblate and
the other near-prolate). These data appear to constitute a unique example of
shape co-existing structures at medium spins.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters
