A Monte-Carlo study of the AdS/CFT correspondence: an exploration of quantum gravity effects
In this paper we study the AdS/CFT correspondence for N=4 SYM with gauge
group U(N), compactified on S^3 in four dimensions using Monte-Carlo
techniques. The simulation is based on a particular reduction of degrees of
freedom to commuting matrices of constant fields, and in particular, we can
write the wave functions of these degrees of freedom exactly. The square of the
wave function is equivalent to a probability density for a Boltzman gas of
interacting particles in six dimensions. From the simulation we can extract the
density particle distribution for each wave function, and this distribution can
be interpreted as a special geometric locus in the gravitational dual. Studying
the wave functions associated to half-BPS giant gravitons, we are able to show
that the matrix model can measure the Planck scale directly. We also show that
the output of our simulation seems to match various theoretical expectations in
the large N limit and that it captures 1/N effects as statistical fluctuations
of the Boltzman gas with the expected scaling. Our results suggest that this is
a very promising approach to explore quantum corrections and effects in

Climate change: The necessary, the possible and the desirable Earth League climate statement on the implications for climate policy from the 5th IPCC Assessment
In time with this year's UN climate conference in Lima, a group of leading scientists, including Earth League members - a global alliance of prominent climate scientists - laid out in a joint paper the key elements of the "the necessary, the possible and the desirable" in relation to climate change.
"We, as citizens with a strong engagement in Earth system science and socio-ecological dynamics, share the vision of a more equitable and prosperous future for the world, yet we also see threats to this future from shifts in climate and environmental processes," the scientists write. "Without collaborative action now, our shared Earth system may not be able to sustainably support a large proportion of humanity in the coming decades.. The authors concisely explain the high risks presented by cascading environmental vulnerabilities and positive feedback effects. They highlight that a transformation towards carbon-free energy systems is feasible, and would come with substantial benefits
The fuzzy S^2 structure of M2-M5 systems in ABJM membrane theories
We analyse the fluctuations of the ground-state/funnel solutions proposed to
describe M2-M5 systems in the level-k mass-deformed/pure Chern-Simons-matter
ABJM theory of multiple membranes. We show that in the large N limit the
fluctuations approach the space of functions on the 2-sphere rather than the
naively expected 3-sphere. This is a novel realisation of the fuzzy 2-sphere in
the context of Matrix Theories, which uses bifundamental instead of adjoint
scalars. Starting from the multiple M2-brane action, a U(1) Yang-Mills theory
on R^{2,1} x S^2 is recovered at large N, which is consistent with a single
D4-brane interpretation in Type IIA string theory. This is as expected at large
k, where the semiclassical analysis is valid. Several aspects of the
fluctuation analysis, the ground-state/funnel solutions and the
mass-deformed/pure ABJM equations can be understood in terms of a discrete
noncommutative realisation of the Hopf fibration. We discuss the implications
for the possibility of finding an M2-brane worldvolume derivation of the
classical S^3 geometry of the M2-M5 system. Using a rewriting of the equations
of the SO(4)-covariant fuzzy 3-sphere construction, we also directly compare
this fuzzy 3-sphere against the ABJM ground-state/funnel solutions and show

The forward physics facility at the high-luminosity LHC
High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential
Client and therapist initial experience of using mindfulness in therapy
Literature has demonstrated the influence of mindfulness practice on both clients and therapists; however, no literature has considered the experience of mindfulness in therapy from both members of the therapeutic dyad. The present study interviewed five separate therapy dyads (n=10) regarding their experience of first using mindfulness in session. Participants, both clients and therapists, had little-to-no experience with mindfulness prior to the study. Interview transcripts were analyzed and common themes were derived. Results indicated that both clients and therapist felt that the practice of mindfulness had an impact on the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, participants also suggested ways in which therapists may better utilize mindfulness in therapy
