Antibody orientation on biosensor surfaces: a minireview
Detection elements play a key role in analyte recognition in biosensors. Therefore, detection elements with high analyte specificity and binding strength are required. While antibodies (Abs) have been increasingly used as detection elements in biosensors, a key challenge remains – the immobilization on the biosensor surface. This minireview highlights recent approaches to immobilize and study Abs on surfaces. We first introduce Ab species used as detection elements, and discuss techniques recently used to elucidate Ab orientation by determination of layer thickness or surface topology. Then, several immobilization methods will be presented: non-covalent and covalent surface attachment, yielding oriented or random coupled Abs. Finally, protein modification methods applicable for oriented Ab immobilization are reviewed with an eye to future application
Two-pion exchange and strong form-factors in covariant field theories
In this work improvements to the application of the Gross equation to nuclear
systems are tested. In particular we evaluate the two pion exchange diagrams,
including the crossed-box diagram, using models developed within the
spectator-on-mass-shell covariant formalism. We found that the form factors
used in these models induce spurious contributions that violate the unitary cut
requirement. We tested then some alternative form-factors in order to preserve
the unitarity condition. With this new choice, the difference between the exact
and the spectator-on-mass-shell amplitudes is of the order of the one boson
scalar exchange, supporting the idea that this difference may be parameterized
by this type of terms.Comment: RevTeX, 21 pages, 19 figures (PostScript
Relativistic effects and quasipotential equations
We compare the scattering amplitude resulting from the several quasipotential
equations for scalar particles. We consider the Blankenbecler-Sugar, Spectator,
Thompson, Erkelenz-Holinde and Equal-Time equations, which were solved
numerically without decomposition into partial waves. We analyze both
negative-energy state components of the propagators and retardation effects. We
found that the scattering solutions of the Spectator and the Equal-Time
equations are very close to the nonrelativistic solution even at high energies.
The overall relativistic effect increases with the energy. The width of the
band for the relative uncertainty in the real part of the scattering
matrix, due to different dynamical equations, is largest for
backward-scattering angles where it can be as large as 40%.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Relativistic description of electron scattering on the deuteron
Within a quasipotential framework a relativistic analysis is presented of the
deuteron current. Assuming that the singularities from the nucleon propagators
are important, a so-called equal time approximation of the current is
constructed. This is applied to both elastic and inelastic electron scattering.
As dynamical model the relativistic one boson exchange model is used.
Reasonable agreement is found with a previous relativistic calculation of the
elastic electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron. For the unpolarized
inelastic electron scattering effects of final state interactions and
relativistic corrections to the structure functions are considered in the
impulse approximation. Two specific kinematic situations are studied as
examples.Comment: (19 pages in revtex + 15 figures not included, available upon

CHIRAL BACKGROUND FOR THE TWO PION EXCHANGE NUCLEAR POTENTIAL: A PARAMETRIZED VERSION
We argue that the minimal chiral background for the two-pion exchange
nucleon-nucleon interaction has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, which
entitles it to become a standard ingredient of any modern potential. In order
to facilitate applications, we present a parametrized version of a
configuration space potential derived previously. We then use it to assess the
phenomenological contents of some existing NN potentials.Comment: REVTEX style, 16 pages, 5 PostScript figures compressed, tarred and

Relativistic Structure of the Deuteron: 1.Electro-disintegration and y-scaling
Realistic solutions of the spinor-spinor Bethe-Salpeter equation for the
deuteron with realistic interaction kernel including the exchange of pi, sigma,
omega, rho, eta and delta mesons, are used to systematically investigate
relativistic effects in inclusive quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering
within the relativistic impulse approximation. Relativistic y-scaling is
considered by generalising the non relativistic scaling function to the
relativistic case, and it is shown that y-scaling does occur in the usual
relativistic scaling variable resulting from the energy conservation in the
instant form of dynamics. The present approach of y-scaling is fully covariant,
with the deuteron being described by eight components, viz. the 3S_1^{++},
3S_1^{--}, 3D_1^{++}, 3D_1^{--}, 3P_1^{+-}, 3P_1^{-+}, 1P_1^{+-}, 1P_1^{-+}
waves. It is demonstrated that if the negative relative energy states 1P_1,
3P_1 are disregarded, the concept of covariant momentum distributions N(p_0,p),
with p_0=M_D/2-\sqrt{p^2+m^2}, can be introduced, and that calculations of
lectro-disintegration cross section in terms of these distributions agree
within few percents with the exact calculations which include the 1P_1, 3P_1
states, provided the nucleon three momentum |p|\<= 1 GeV/c; in this momentum
range, the asymptotic relativistic scaling function is shown to coincide with
the longitudinal covariant momentum distribution.Comment: 32 LaTeX pages, 18 eps-figures. Final version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Next-to-Leading Order QCD Analysis of Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering Data
We present a Next-to-Leading order perturbative QCD analysis of world data on
the spin dependent structure functions , and , including
the new experimental information on the dependence of . Careful
attention is paid to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The data
constrain the first moments of the polarized valence quark distributions, but
only qualitatively constrain the polarized sea quark and gluon distributions.
The NLO results are used to determine the dependence of the ratio
and evolve the experimental data to a constant . We
determine the first moments of the polarized structure functions of the proton
and neutron and find agreement with the Bjorken sum rule.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; final version to be published in Phys. Lett. B.

Electromagnetic properties of the deuteron in a relativistic one-boson exchange model
The deuteron electric electromagnetic form factors are studied in a quasi-potential framework, where relativistic and meson-exchange contributions are treated consistently. At moderate momentum transfer the corrections to the static approximation are found to be significantly less than estimates obtained in the conventional perturbational treatment. It is argued that this is due to the neglect of dynamical corrections to the wave function in the latter approach
Sound propagation in fluids and neutron spectra
Using a model kinetic equation the properties of very short wavelength sound modes in fluids are studied over a wide range of wavenumbers and densities. The main features, in particular propagation gaps at high densities, agree with those found in real fluids and molecular dynamics simulations
Kinetic theory of the eigenmodes of classical fluids and neutron scattering
The lowest lying eigenmodes of a classical fluid have been approximately determined for a wide range of densities and wavenumbers. The most important eigenmodes are direct extensions of the three hydrodynamic heat and sound modes to much larger wavenumbers. A new and consistent interpretation of neutron spectra and related molecular dynamics simulations in terms of these modes is made. Also experimental predictions are discussed, some of which seem particularly suitable for investigating with spillation sources
