Auld Lang Syne
In Auld Lang Syne: A Song and its Culture, M. J. Grant explores the history of this iconic song, demonstrating how its association with ideas of fellowship, friendship and sociality has enabled it to become so significant for such a wide range of individuals and communities around the world. This engaging study traces different stages in the journey of Auld Lang Syne, from the precursors to the song made famous by Robert Burns to the traditions and rituals that emerged around the song in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including its use as a song of parting, and as a song of New Year. Grant’s painstaking study investigates the origins of these varied traditions, and their impact on the transmission of the song right up to the present day. Grant uses Auld Lang Syne to explore the importance of songs and singing for group identity, arguing that it is the active practice of singing the song in group contexts that has made it so significant for so many. The book offers fascinating insights into the ways that Auld Lang Syne has been received, reused and remixed around the world, concluding with a chapter on more recent versions of the song back in Scotland. State-space approach to nonlinear predictive generalized minimum variance control
A Nonlinear Predictive Generalized Minimum Variance (NPGMV) control algorithm is introduced for the control of nonlinear discrete-time multivariable systems. The plant model is represented by the combination of a very general nonlinear operator and also a linear subsystem which can be open-loop unstable and is represented in state-space model form. The multi-step predictive control cost index to be minimised involves both weighted error and control signal costing terms. The solution for the control law is derived in the time-domain using a general operator representation of the process. The controller includes an internal model of the nonlinear process but because of the assumed structure of the system the state observer is only required to be linear. In the asymptotic case, where the plant is linear, the controller reduces to a state-space version of the well known GPC controller
An Investigation of Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and Eurasian Badger (Meles meles) Scavenging, Scattering, and Removal of Deer Remains: Forensic Implications and Applications
Within northwest Europe, especially the United Kingdom, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the Eurasian Badger (Meles meles) are the largest wild scavengers capable of modifying a set of remains through scavenging. Knowledge of region-specific and species-typical scavenging behaviors of scavengers within the crime scene area and surroundings can aid in more efficient and accurate interpretations. The scavenging behaviors of captive and wild foxes and badgers were recorded and compared through actualistic methods and direct observation. The scavenging by wild foxes and badgers of surface-deposited baits and whole deer (Cervus nippon; Capreolus capreolus) in a woodland was observed and analyzed. Wild foxes were found to scavenge deer more frequently than badgers. The scavenging of deer remains by foxes was also compared with forensic cases. The scavenging pattern and recovery distances of deer and human remains scavenged by foxes were similar but were potentially affected by the condition and deposition of a body, and the presence of clothing

Nonorientable spacetime tunneling
Misner space is generalized to have the nonorientable topology of a Klein
bottle, and it is shown that in a classical spacetime with multiply connected
space slices having such a topology, closed timelike curves are formed.
Different regions on the Klein bottle surface can be distinguished which are
separated by apparent horizons fixed at particular values of the two angular
variables that eneter the metric. Around the throat of this tunnel (which we
denote a Klein bottlehole), the position of these horizons dictates an ordinary
and exotic matter distribution such that, in addition to the known diverging
lensing action of wormholes, a converging lensing action is also present at the
mouths. Associated with this matter distribution, the accelerating version of
this Klein bottlehole shows four distinct chronology horizons, each with its
own nonchronal region. A calculation of the quantum vacuum fluctuations
performed by using the regularized two-point Hadamard function shows that each
chronology horizon nests a set of polarized hypersurfaces where the
renormalized momentum-energy tensor diverges. This quantum instability can be
prevented if we take the accelerating Klein bottlehole to be a generalization
of a modified Misner space in which the period of the closed spatial direction
is time-dependent. In this case, the nonchronal regions and closed timelike

On the warp drive space-time
In this paper the problem of the quantum stability of the two-dimensional
warp drive spacetime moving with an apparent faster than light velocity is
considered. We regard as a maximum extension beyond the event horizon of that
spacetime its embedding in a three-dimensional Minkowskian space with the
topology of the corresponding Misner space. It is obtained that the interior of
the spaceship bubble becomes then a multiply connected nonchronal region with
closed timelike curves and that the most natural vacuum allows quantum
fluctuations which do not induce any divergent behaviour of the re-normalized
stress-energy tensor, even on the event (Cauchy) chronology horizon. In such a
case, the horizon encloses closed timelike curves only at scales close to the
Planck length, so that the warp drive satisfies the Ford's negative energy-time
inequality. Also found is a connection between the superluminal two-dimensional
warp drive space and two-dimensional gravitational kinks. This connection
allows us to generalize the considered Alcubierre metric to a standard,

Extra Families, Higgs Spectrum and Oblique Corrections
The standard model accommodates, but does not explain, three families of
leptons and quarks, while various extensions suggest extra matter families. The
oblique corrections from extra chiral families with relatively light
(weak-scale) masses, , are analyzed and used to constrain the
number of extra families and their spectrum. The analysis is motivated, in
part, by recent N = 2 supersymmetry constructions, but is performed in a
model-independent way. It is shown that the correlations among the
contributions to the three oblique parameters, rather than the contribution to
a particular one, provide the most significant bound. Nevertheless, a single
extra chiral family with a constrained spectrum is found to be consistent with
precision data without requiring any other new physics source. Models with
three additional families may also be accommodated but only by invoking
additional new physics, most notably, a two-Higgs-doublet extension. The
interplay between the spectra of the extra fermions and the Higgs boson(s) is
analyzed in the case of either one or two Higgs doublets, and its implications
are explored. In particular, the precision bound on the SM-like Higgs boson
mass is shown to be significantly relaxed in the presence of an extra
