Fatigue Crack Growth Mechanisms At the Microstructure Scale in Al-Si-Mg Cast Alloys: Mechanisms in Regions II and III

The fatigue crack growth behavior in Regions 11 and III of crack growth was investigated for hypoeutectic and eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys. To isolate and establish the mechanistic contributions of characteristic microstructural features (dendritic α-Al matrix, eutectic phases, Mg-Si strengthening precipitates), alloys with various Si content/morphology, grain size level, and matrix strength were studied; the effect of secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) was also assessed. In Regions 11 and III of crack growth, the observed changes in the fracture surface appearance were associated with changes in crack growth mechanisms at the microstructural scale (from a linear advance predominantly through primary α-Al to a tortuous advance exclusively through AI-Si eutectic Regions). The extent of the plastic zone ahead of the crack tip was successfully used to explain the changes in growth mechanisms. The fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on compact tension specimens under constant stress ratio, R = 0.1, in ambient conditions

Application of activated barrier hopping theory to viscoplastic modeling of glassy polymers

YesAn established statistical mechanical theory of amorphous polymer deformation has been incorporated as a plastic mechanism into a constitutive model and applied to a range of polymer mechanical deformations. The temperature and rate dependence of the tensile yield of PVC, as reported in early studies, has been modeled to high levels of accuracy. Tensile experiments on PET reported here are analyzed similarly and good accuracy is also achieved. The frequently observed increase in the gradient of the plot of yield stress against logarithm of strain rate is an inherent feature of the constitutive model. The form of temperature dependence of the yield that is predicted by the model is found to give an accurate representation. The constitutive model is developed in two-dimensional form and implemented as a user-defined subroutine in the finite element package ABAQUS. This analysis is applied to the tensile experiments on PET, in some of which strain is localized in the form of shear bands and necks. These deformations are modeled with partial success, though adiabatic heating of the instability causes inaccuracies for this isothermal implementation of the model. The plastic mechanism has advantages over the Eyring process, is equally tractable, and presents no particular difficulties in implementation with finite elements.F. Host galaxy magnitude of OJ 287 from its colours at minimum light

OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in 2017 November, when its brightness was about 1.75 mag lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B-V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen in V-R, V-I, and R-I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is V = 18.0 ± 0.3, corresponding to MK =-26.5 ± 0.3 in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN. In the case of OJ 287, both the host galaxy and its central black hole are among the biggest known, and its position in the black hole mass-galaxy mass diagram lies close to the mean correlation
