    Remembering Forward: Neural Correlates of Memory and Prediction in Human Motor Adaptation

    We used functional MR imaging (FMRI), a robotic manipulandum and systems identification techniques to examine neural correlates of predictive compensation for spring-like loads during goal-directed wrist movements in neurologically-intact humans. Although load changed unpredictably from one trial to the next, subjects nevertheless used sensorimotor memories from recent movements to predict and compensate upcoming loads. Prediction enabled subjects to adapt performance so that the task was accomplished with minimum effort. Population analyses of functional images revealed a distributed, bilateral network of cortical and subcortical activity supporting predictive load compensation during visual target capture. Cortical regions – including prefrontal, parietal and hippocampal cortices – exhibited trial-by-trial fluctuations in BOLD signal consistent with the storage and recall of sensorimotor memories or “states” important for spatial working memory. Bilateral activations in associative regions of the striatum demonstrated temporal correlation with the magnitude of kinematic performance error (a signal that could drive reward-optimizing reinforcement learning and the prospective scaling of previously learned motor programs). BOLD signal correlations with load prediction were observed in the cerebellar cortex and red nuclei (consistent with the idea that these structures generate adaptive fusimotor signals facilitating cancelation of expected proprioceptive feedback, as required for conditional feedback adjustments to ongoing motor commands and feedback error learning). Analysis of single subject images revealed that predictive activity was at least as likely to be observed in more than one of these neural systems as in just one. We conclude therefore that motor adaptation is mediated by predictive compensations supported by multiple, distributed, cortical and subcortical structures

    Maize Production Impacts on Groundwater Quality

    The cumulative effects of management pratices on nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching and groundwater quality are frequently difficult to document because of the time required for expression and the diversity of interacting process involved. This work reports results of a N and water management program initiated by the Central Platte Natural Resource District (CPNRD) in Nebraska. Cultural pratices recommended by the CPNRD and reported by producers for the 1988 growing season, representing approximately 3900 fields and fertilizer N application rates. Groundwater NO3-N concentrations were positively correlated with ressidual N in the surface 0.9 m of soil prior to the growing season, reflecting the effects of past N and water management practices. Yield goals in 1988 averaged 9% higher than the average 10.0 Mg ha-1 in excess of the average N recommendation. By comparison, in a 1980 to 1984 study from an area within the CPNRD, yield goals averaged 28% greater than actual yields. Overly optimistic yield goals in 1988 accounted for 42% of the average excess N application rate 48 kg ha-1 (based on University of Nebraska recommendations). A large portion of average excess N application is attributed to producers in 14% of the area who applied \u3e 100 kg N ha-1 more than the recommened rates. Fertilizer N applied showed little relationship to fertilizer N recommended. Better education and more stringent measures may be required to address the select group of producers who fail to follow CPNRD recommendations

    Breeding Bird Surveys at Alexandra Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut (1980–2008)

    Long-term monitoring of bird populations in the Arctic is of considerable interest as this area is experiencing rapid climate warming; however, multi-decadal studies in the Canadian High Arctic are rare. Over five summers between 1980 and 2008, we conducted breeding bird surveys by walking transects and mapping territories in a periglacial lowland on east-central Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. In all survey years, snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis), Lapland longspur (Calcarius lapponicus), and Baird's sandpiper (Calidris bairdii) were the most abundant species. Over the study period, the assemblage of breeding bird species appears to have changed little, except for an increase in Lapland longspur. In the summer of 2008, we also compared two techniques for censusing territories. We found that spot-mapping, a simple and cost-effective method, produced similar results to the more labour-intensive active-flushing. Spot-mapping is therefore suitable for conducting bird surveys in northern locations where the vegetation is short, the terrain is flat, and the visibility is extensive. In the coming years, it will be important to continue monitoring Arctic birds to determine how climate change is affecting their breeding populations.La surveillance à long terme des populations d'oiseaux de l'Arctique revêt un intérêt considérable à la lumière du changement climatique rapide que connaît cette région. Cela dit, il faut remarquer que peu d'études échelonnées sur plusieurs décennies ont été réalisées dans l'Extrême-Arctique canadien. Au cours de cinq étés répartis entre 1980 et 2008, nous avons effectué le dénombrement d'oiseaux nicheurs en traversant des transects et en cartographiant des territoires situés sur les basses terres périglaciaires de l'île d'Ellesmere, au Nunavut. Au cours de toutes les années visées par le dénombrement, le bruant des neiges (Plectrophenax nivalis), le bruant lapon (Calcarius lapponicus) et le bécasseau de Baird (Calidris bairdii) se sont avérés les espèces les plus abondantes. Au cours de la période visée par l'étude, l'assemblage d'espèces d'oiseaux nicheurs semble avoir peu changé, sauf pour ce qui est d'une augmentation de bruants lapons. À l'été 2008, nous avons également comparé deux techniques de recensement des territoires. Nous avons effectivement constaté que la méthode des plans quadrillés, une méthode simple et abordable, donnait des résultats semblables à la méthode de dispersion active qui demande beaucoup plus de travail. Par conséquent, la méthode des plans quadrillés convient bien à la réalisation de recensements d'oiseaux dans les emplacements nordiques où la végétation est courte, où le terrain est plat et où la visibilité est vaste. Au cours des années à venir, il sera important de continuer à surveiller les oiseaux de l'Arctique afin de déterminer quelles sont les incidences du changement climatique sur les populations d'oiseaux nicheurs

    Presented in this paper the nature of the supersymmetrical representation theory behind 4D, N = 1 theories, as described by component fields, is investigated using the tools of Adinkras and Garden Algebras. A survey of familiar matter multiplets using these techniques reveals they are described by two fundamental valise Adinkras that are given the names of the cis-Valise (c-V) and the trans-Valise (t-V).     Anisotropy of the Taylor Scale and the Correlation Scale in Plasma Sheet and Solar Wind Magnetic Field Fluctuations

    Magnetic field data from nine spacecraft in the magnetospheric plasma sheet and the solar wind are employed to determine the correlation scale and the magnetic Taylor microscale from simultaneous multiple-point measurements for multiple intervals with a range of mean magnetic field directions. We have determined that in the solar wind the Taylor scale is independent of direction relative to the mean magnetic field, but the correlation scale along the mean magnetic field (2.7 106 ± 0.2 106 km) is longer than along the perpendicular direction (1.5 106 ± 0.1 106 km). Within the plasma sheet we found that the correlation scale varies from 16,400 ± 1000 km along the mean magnetic field direction to 9200 ± 600 km in the perpendicular direction. The Taylor scale is also longer parallel to the magnetic field (2900 ± 100 km) than perpendicular to it (1100 ± 100 km). In the solar wind the ratio of the parallel correlation scale to the perpendicular correlation scale is 2.62 ± 0.79; in the plasma sheet the ratio is 1.78 ± 0.16, which indicates that the turbulence in both regions is anisotropic. The correlation and Taylor scales may be used to estimate effective magnetic Reynolds numbers separately for each angular channel. Reynolds numbers were found to be approximately independent of the angle relative to the mean magnetic field. These results may be useful in magnetohydrodynamic modeling of the solar wind and the magnetosphere and can contribute to our understanding of solar and galactic cosmic ray diffusion in the heliosphere.Fil: Weygand, James M..     Reevaluation of the role of nuclear uncertainties in experiments on atomic parity violation with isotopic chains

    In light of new data on neutron distributions from experiments with antiprotonic atoms [ Trzcinska {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 082501 (2001)], we reexamine the role of nuclear-structure uncertainties in the interpretation of measurements of parity violation in atoms using chains of isotopes of the same element. With these new nuclear data, we find an improvement in the sensitivity of isotopic chain measurements to ``new physics'' beyond the standard model. We compare possible constraints on ``new physics'' with the most accurate to date single-isotope probe of parity violation in the Cs atom. We conclude that presently isotopic chain experiments employing atoms with nuclear charges Z < 50 may result in more accurate tests of the weak interaction.Comment: 6 pages, 1 fig., submitted to Phys.     Indirect Dark Matter Detection from Dwarf Satellites: Joint Expectations from Astrophysics and Supersymmetry

    We present a general methodology for determining the gamma-ray flux from annihilation of dark matter particles in Milky Way satellite galaxies, focusing on two promising satellites as examples: Segue 1 and Draco. We use the SuperBayeS code to explore the best-fitting regions of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) parameter space, and an independent MCMC analysis of the dark matter halo properties of the satellites using published radial velocities. We present a formalism for determining the boost from halo substructure in these galaxies and show that its value depends strongly on the extrapolation of the concentration-mass (c(M)) relation for CDM subhalos down to the minimum possible mass. We show that the preferred region for this minimum halo mass within the CMSSM with neutralino dark matter is ~10^-9-10^-6 solar masses. For the boost model where the observed power-law c(M) relation is extrapolated down to the minimum halo mass we find average boosts of about 20, while the Bullock et al (2001) c(M) model results in boosts of order unity. We estimate that for the power-law c(M) boost model and photon energies greater than a GeV, the Fermi space-telescope has about 20% chance of detecting a dark matter annihilation signal from Draco with signal-to-noise greater than 3 after about 5 years of observation

    Interface electronic states and boundary conditions for envelope functions

    The envelope-function method with generalized boundary conditions is applied to the description of localized and resonant interface states. A complete set of phenomenological conditions which restrict the form of connection rules for envelope functions is derived using the Hermiticity and symmetry requirements. Empirical coefficients in the connection rules play role of material parameters which characterize an internal structure of every particular heterointerface. As an illustration we present the derivation of the most general connection rules for the one-band effective mass and 4-band Kane models. The conditions for the existence of Tamm-like localized interface states are established. It is shown that a nontrivial form of the connection rules can also result in the formation of resonant states. The most transparent manifestation of such states is the resonant tunneling through a single-barrier heterostructure.Comment: RevTeX4, 11 pages, 5 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
