The effect of σ-phase precipitation at 800°C on the corrosion resistance in sea-water of a high alloyed duplex stainless steel

Super-duplex stainless steels are recently developed high alloyed stainless steels that combine good mechanical properties with excellent corrosion resistance. Because of a high content of chromium and molybdenum, these alloys are susceptible to σ-phase precipitation during short exposure to temperatures between 650 and 950°C. The effect of 800°C aging on σ-phase formation and on the mechanical properties of a super-duplex stainless steel have been reported previously by the authors.1 This investigation concerns the effect of σ-phase precipitation at 800°C on the corrosion behaviour in seawater and comprises anodic polarization scans and potentiostatic crevice corrosion tests. A serious deterioration of the corrosion resistance is found after aging times longer than 7 min, resulting in a drop of both the critical crevice corrosion temperature (CCT) and the breakdown potential (Ebd). The initiation of localized corrosion takes place next to the σ-phase, in the newly formed secondary austenite (Îł2)

Black Hole Astrophysics in AdS Braneworlds

We consider astrophysics of large black holes localized on the brane in the infinite Randall-Sundrum model. Using their description in terms of a conformal field theory (CFT) coupled to gravity, deduced in Ref. [1], we show that they undergo a period of rapid decay via Hawking radiation of CFT modes. For example, a black hole of mass few×M⊙{\rm few} \times M_\odot would shed most of its mass in ∌104−105\sim 10^4 - 10^5 years if the AdS radius is L∌10−1L \sim 10^{-1} mm, currently the upper bound from table-top experiments. Since this is within the mass range of X-ray binary systems containing a black hole, the evaporation enhanced by the hidden sector CFT modes could cause the disappearance of X-ray sources on the sky. This would be a striking signature of RS2 with a large AdS radius. Alternatively, for shorter AdS radii, the evaporation would be slower. In such cases, the persistence of X-ray binaries with black holes already implies an upper bound on the AdS radius of L \la 10^{-2} mm, an order of magnitude better than the bounds from table-top experiments. The observation of primordial black holes with a mass in the MACHO range M∌0.1−0.5M⊙M \sim 0.1 - 0.5 M_\odot and an age comparable to the age of the universe would further strengthen the bound on the AdS radius to L \la {\rm few} \times 10^{-6} mm.Comment: 14 pages, latex, no figures v2: added reference

Microstructural Evolution of Secondary Phases in the Cast Duplex Stainless Steels CD3MN and CD3MWCuN

The isothermal formation behavior of secondary phases in two types of duplex stainless steels (DSS), CD3MN and CD3MWCuN, was characterized. Samples were heat treated from 1 minute to 30 days at temperatures from 700°C to 900°C. Small carbide (M23C6) and nitride (Cr2N) precipitates, together with the intermetallic phases sigma and chi, were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. Based on SEM analysis, time-temperature-transformation (TTT) curves for the sigma and chi phases were determined by measuring their volume fractions from backscattered electron micrographs of heat-treated and quenched sample cross sections. Resulting TTT curves showed that the maximum formation temperature for chi is lower than that for sigma, while the time to reach 1 vol pct formation is much less for sigma than it is for chi. The thermodynamic driving forces associated with the sigma and chi formation were assessed using Thermo-Calc

New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE Δ4 allele

Corrosion and Microstructural Investigation on Additively Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel: Experimental and Statistical Approach

The use of metal additive manufacturing (AM) has strongly increased in the industry during the last years. More specifically, selective laser melting (SLM) is one of the most used techniques due to its numerous advantages compared to conventional processing methods. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of process parameters on the microstructural and corrosion properties of the additively manufactured AISI 316L stainless steel. Porosity, surface roughness, hardness, and grain size were studied for specimens produced with energy densities ranging from 51.17 to 173.91 J/mm3 that resulted from different combinations of processing parameters. Using experimental results and applying the Taguchi model, 99.38 J/mm3 was determined as the optimal energy density needed to produce samples with almost no porosity. The following analysis of variance ANOVA confirmed the scanning speed as the most influential factor in reducing the porosity percentage, which had a 74.9% contribution, followed by the position along the building direction with 22.8%, and finally, the laser energy with 2.3%. The influence on corrosion resistance was obtained by performing cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests (CPP) in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution at room temperature for different energy densities and positions (Z axis). The corrosion properties of the AM samples were studied and compared to those obtained from the traditionally manufactured samples. The corrosion resistance of the samples worsened with the increase in the percentage of porosity. The process parameters have consequently been optimized and the database has been extended to improve the quality of the AM-produced parts in which microstructural heterogeneities were observed along the building direction.Team Yaiza Gonzalez Garci

Corrosion challenges towards a sustainable society

    No full text
A global transition towards more sustainable, affordable and reliable energy systems is being stimulated by the Paris Agreement and the United Nation's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This poses a challenge for the corrosion industry, as building climate-resilient energy systems and infrastructures brings with it a long-term direction, so as a result the long-term behaviour of structural materials (mainly metals and alloys) becomes a major prospect. With this in mind “Corrosion Challenges Towards a Sustainable Society” presents a series of cases showing the importance of corrosion protection of metals and alloys in the development of energy production to further understand the science of corrosion, and bring the need for research and the consequences of corrosion into public and political focus. This includes emphasis on the limitation of greenhouse gas emissions, on the lifetime of infrastructures, implants, cultural heritage artefacts, and a variety of other topics..Team Arjan Mo

The SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey: X-ray selection function models for the eRASS1 galaxy cluster cosmology

    No full text
International audienceCharacterising galaxy cluster populations from catalog of sources selected in astronomical surveys requires knowledge of sample incompleteness, known as selection function. The first All-Sky Survey (eRASS1) by eROSITA onboard Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) has enabled the collection of large samples of galaxy clusters detected in the soft X-ray band over the Western Galactic hemisphere. The driving goal consists in constraining cosmological parameters, which puts stringent requirements on accuracy, flexibility and explainability of the selection function models. We use a large set of mock observations of the eRASS1 survey and we process simulated data identically to the real eRASS1 events. We match detected sources to simulated clusters and we associate detections to intrinsic cluster properties. We train a series of models to build selection functions depending only on observable surface brightness data. We develop a second series of models relying on global cluster characteristics such as X-ray luminosity, flux, and expected instrumental count-rate as well as on morphological properties. We validate our models using our simulations and we rank them according to selected performance metrics. We validate the models with datasets of clusters detected in X-rays and via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We present the complete Bayesian population modelling framework developed for this purpose. Our results reveal the surface brightness characteristics most relevant to cluster selection in the eRASS1 sample, in particular the ambiguous role of central surface brightness at the scale of the instrument resolution. We have produced a series of user-friendly selection function models and demonstrated their validity and their limitations. Our selection function for bright sources reproduces well the catalog matches with external datasets. (abridged
