Temperature oscillations of hydrothermal waves in thermocapillary-buoyancy convection
We report an experimental study of a fluid layer of Prandtl number Pr510.3 subject to a horizontal temperature
gradient with the surface open to the air. For certain values of the control parameters ~fluid depth and
temperature difference! the basic flow is destabilized and a pair of so-called oblique hydrothermal waves is
observed. It is found that some main physical features are in agreement with those analyzed by Smith and
Davis @J. Fluid Mech. 132, 119 ~1983!#. Vertical and horizontal temperature profiles were measured, showing
bulk temperature oscillations that propagate in the direction of the temperature gradient. This behavior is
similar to the instability mechanism explained by Smith and Davis for intermediate Pr
Local Marangoni number at the onset of hydrothermal waves
We report the results of an experiment in which a layer of fluid, placed in a container open to the air, is
subjected to a horizontal temperature difference DT. The fluid height h is kept constant and both the horizontal
temperature difference and the horizontal dimensions of the fluid layer are changed. In this configuration, when
DT goes beyond a certain threshold, waves propagating from the cold to the hot side appear ~hydrothermal
waves! with a determined group velocity. We study the influence of the container geometry on these waves.
Close to the threshold, they are spatially localized near the hot side and a local Marangoni number is defined
to describe this behavior. If DT is further increased, the waves fill the whole fluid layer. We also find an
agreement between our experimental results and theoretical works and simulations

Tranvel Instabilities in Lateral Heating
We study the convective motion forced by lateral heating on a liquid layer. The movement is
caused by two forces: buoyancy and thermocapillarity on the free surface, which is open to the
air. As soon as a temperature gradient is imposed along the liquid layer, the fluid begins to
move. When a certain threshold of the temperature di erence is attained, this flow destabilizes
and oscillations appear. We have performed an experiment to characterize the thermocapillary
waves in a rectangular container whose dimensions can be continuously changed. This way, we
are able to investigate how boundaries a ect the threshold for the instability, as well as their
consequences on other features of the waves
