    Location specific field performance of aman rice cultivars in tidal flood prone ecosystem of Bangladesh

Therefore, rice growers are cultivating local rice cultivars that resist tidal water pressure and survive under waterlogged condition in a tidal ecosystem. A farmers’ participatory field experiment was conducted at Wazirpur, Bakergonj and Babugonj upazila of Barisal and Nalchity upazila under Jhalokati districts of Bangladesh to identify location specifies some aman rice cultivars that resist TF and give higher grain yield. There were fiftysixty local rice cultivars along with five modern rice varieties were included in this trial. The experimental sites were extensively TF prone and 10 to 80 cm of flood water entered into the crop field during active tillering to flowering stage of rice. Data on plant height, yield and yield components were recorded. The results revealed that local rice cultivars performed better than modern one in the experimental sites. Taller plant, production of more panicles per unit area, higher number of grains panicle-1 and heavier grains were the most important traits associated with plant adaptation of aman rice cultivars in tidal areas. Collectively, this study suggested that Dudmona1 and Khoiyamota1 at Wazirpur (2.98 to 3.10 t ha-1 ); Dishari1 and Sadamota2 at Bakergonj (2.92 to 2.98 t ha-1 ); Shorna at Babugonj (3.56 t ha-1 ); Moulata2, Achin and Sadamota2 at Nalchity (2.96 to 2.98 t ha-1 ) were most promising rice cultivar in terms of adaptation and grain yield

    Food habits of Oxygaster bacaila (Ham.) from Kaptai Lake, Bangladesh

    Gut contents of 120 Oxygaster bacaila fmm Kaptai Lake were studied. Index of preponderance (IP) indicated that 0. bacaila consumed highest amount of Insects (35.89%) and thus occupied the first position among the food items. Zooplankton (Rmifera and crustacea 31.79%) and the other food items found in the guts were algae (Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae and Cyanophyceae 24.51%). From the analysis of gut contents, this fish might be considered as omnivore as it consumed both animal and plant foods with higher preference for animal food. The feeding intensity of this fish is fairly high. Total length (TL) versus gut length (GL) relationship and their ratio were found to be GL = 0.57663 TLL04801 (r = 0.9963) and TL: GL = l: 0.7086 respectively

    Based on the present investigation and reviewing the published and unpublished documents critically, this communication considers the post impoundment changes in the fish fauna of Kaptai reservoir. Investigation reveals that a total of 73 species of fish belongs to 47 genera, 25 families and 2 species of prawn are present in the reservoir. Of them, 31 are commercially important, 6 and 9 species are newly identified

    Preliminary success on hormone induced captive breeding of goldspot mullet, Liza parsia (Ham.)

    An attempt was made to breed goldspot mullet, Liza parsia in captivity through hormone induction. The fish started spawning 35-36 hours after a single dose of 2ml ova prim per kg body weight. Hatching of fertilized eggs completed within 42-48 hours after spawning. The mean hatching rate (%) was 71.33±12 corresponding to the fertilization rate (%) of 64±12. The larvae started its first external feeding on the third day and attained a length 2.5±0.25 mm. The salinity of both breeding and rearing cisterns was 20‰ and temperature was maintained at 22-23°C

    AbstractThe redox behaviour of manganese system in Mn–Sac and Mn–Sac–Phen complexes were studied using cyclic voltammetry technique at glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in 0.1M KCl electrolyte. The CV of Mn–Sac solution is more or less similar to that of uncoordinated Mn (in MnCl2) accept slight difference in peak position and peak current. The presence of secondary ligand phenanthroline (in Mn–Sac–Phen complex) changes the CV of Mn system largely compared to those of uncoordinated Mn and Mn–Sac. The redox system is irreversible in Mn–Sac and quasi-reversible in Mn–Sac–Phen complex. The effect of concentration and pH on the redox behaviour of Mn system have been studied for both the complexes

    Rice growth and yield characteristics under elevated carbon dioxide and nitrogen management

A pot experiment was conducted in open top chambers (OTC) to determine the response of rice to elevated CO2 (eCO2) under varying time of nitrogen (N) application. The results revealed that photosynthesis, root and shoot dry matter production, yield components and nutrient absorption were favored at eCO2 when N applied up to flowering stage (FT) of rice. However, the N application up to FT of rice also significantly improved percent filled grain, reduce spikelet sterility and rice yield increased by 18 to 20% under eCO2. Rice plant absorbed higher amount of Zn, Ca, Mg, and Fe at eCO2 when N was applied up to FT. Amylose was higher but protein percentage was lower at eCO2. These results indicate that to maximize rice yield under eCO2, it is important to supply N up to FT of rice in order to increase grain fertility and reduce spikelet sterility

    Effect of Household Solid Waste on Initial Growth Performance of Acacia auriculiformis and Cedrela toona in Mycorrhiza Inoculated Soil

    Solid waste disposal and management became one of the major environmental concerns in Bangladesh. Realising the problem, the present study has been undertaken with a view to find a sound and effective way of bio-degradable solid waste management. The study was carried out in the nursery of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at University of Chittagong to determine the effects of solid waste and waste inoculated with mycorrhizal soil on initial growth performance of Acacia auriculiformis and Cedrela toona. Before planting the seedlings, decomposable waste and mycorrhiza inoculated decomposable waste were placed on the planting holes. Physical growth parameters of seedlings (shoot and root length, leaf and branch number, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root and nodulation status) and the macro nutrients (N, P and K) were recorded after six months of planting. The highest performance of physical parameters was recorded in the soil treated by mycorrhiza inoculated waste. Cedrela toona was represented by maximum nutrients uptake (N-2.60%, P-0.21% and K-2.34% respectively) in the soil treated with mycorrhiza. In case of Acacia auriculiformis, N uptake was maximum (3.02%) in control while K uptake was highest (1.27%) in soil with waste and P (0.18%) uptake was highest in the soil treated with mycorrhiza inoculated waste. Highest initial growth performance was revealed by seedlings treated with mycorrhiza inoculated waste. This study suggested to use mycorrhiza and waste for plantation purposes for hygienic disposal of solid waste and to reduce cost of cultivation

    Hematology and serum chemistry reference values of stray dogs in Bangladesh

    Hematology and serum chemistry values were obtained from 28 male and 22 female stray dogs in Chittagong Metropolitan area, Bangladesh. The goal of the study was to establish reference value for hematology and serum chemistry for these semi wild animals in relation to age, sex, reproductive stage and body condition. No significant differences were found for mean values of hemoglobin, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, white blood cell, differential leukocyte count, total protein, albumin, glucose, cholesterol, phosphorus and potassium among or between sexes, ages, reproductive states or body conditions. Significant differences were noted for erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p<0.02) between sexes. Among different age groups significant differences were found for total red blood cell count (p<0.001). Different body conditions have significant differences in red blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (p<0.001). Pregnant and non-pregnant females differed significantly in their red blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (p<0.001)
