    Constraints on scalar diffusion anomaly in three-dimensional flows having bounded velocity gradients

    This study is concerned with the decay behaviour of a passive scalar θ\theta in three-dimensional flows having bounded velocity gradients. Given an initially smooth scalar distribution, the decay rate d/dtd/dt of the scalar variance is found to be bounded in terms of controlled physical parameters. Furthermore, in the zero diffusivity limit, κ0\kappa\to0, this rate vanishes as κα0\kappa^{\alpha_0} if there exists an α0(0,1]\alpha_0\in(0,1] independent of κ\kappa such that <<\infty for αα0\alpha\le\alpha_0. This condition is satisfied if in the limit κ0\kappa\to0, the variance spectrum Θ(k)\Theta(k) remains steeper than k1k^{-1} for large wave numbers kk. When no such positive α0\alpha_0 exists, the scalar field may be said to become virtually singular. A plausible scenario consistent with Batchelor's theory is that Θ(k)\Theta(k) becomes increasingly shallower for smaller κ\kappa, approaching the Batchelor scaling k1k^{-1} in the limit κ0\kappa\to0. For this classical case, the decay rate also vanishes, albeit more slowly -- like (lnPr)1(\ln P_r)^{-1}, where PrP_r is the Prandtl or Schmidt number. Hence, diffusion anomaly is ruled out for a broad range of scalar distribution, including power-law spectra no shallower than k1k^{-1}. The implication is that in order to have a κ\kappa-independent and non-vanishing decay rate, the variance at small scales must necessarily be greater than that allowed by the Batchelor spectrum. These results are discussed in the light of existing literature on the asymptotic exponential decay eγt\sim e^{-\gamma t}, where γ>0\gamma>0 is independent of κ\kappa.Comment: 6-7 journal pages, no figures. accepted for publication by Phys.     Analysis of interior noise ground and flight test data for advanced turboprop aircraft applications

    Interior noise ground tests conducted on a DC-9 aircraft test section are described. The objectives were to study ground test and analysis techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of interior noise control treatments for advanced turboprop aircraft, and to study the sensitivity of the ground test results to changes in various test conditions. Noise and vibration measurements were conducted under simulated advanced turboprop excitation, for two interior noise control treatment configurations. These ground measurement results were compared with results of earlier UHB (Ultra High Bypass) Demonstrator flight tests with comparable interior treatment configurations. The Demonstrator is an MD-80 test aircraft with the left JT8D engine replaced with a prototype UHB advanced turboprop engine

    Thermal reaction of Al/Ti bilayers with contaminated interface

    We have studied some new aspects of thermal reactions in Al/Ti bilayers in which the interface is purposely contaminated with oxygen. After annealing at a temperature of 460 °C, an Al_3Ti compound forms at the interface, moreover some Al diffuses through the Ti to form a compound at the free surface. The amount of aluminum at the free surface can be as large as at the interface. Nucleation and lateral growth of Al_3Ti at the interface are locally unfavorable. This results in a competition between the lateral growth of Al_3Ti at the Al/Ti interface and the diffusion of Al to the free surface. Once full coverage by Al_3Ti is obtained at the Al/Ti interface, the diffusion of Al to the surface becomes negligible

    Using Cluster Analysis to Identify Subgroups of College Students at Increased Risk for Cardiovascular Disease

    Background and Purpose: To examine the co-occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors and cluster subgroups of college students for cardiovascular risks. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted using co-occurrence patterns and hierarchical clustering analysis in 158 college students. Results: The top co-occurring cardiovascular risk factors were overweight/obese and hypertension (10.8%, n = 17). Of the total 34 risk factors that co-occurred, 30 of them involved being overweight/obese. A six-cluster-solution was obtained, two clusters displayed elevated levels of lifetime and 30-year cardiovascular disease risks. Conclusions: The hierarchical cluster analysis identified that single White males with a family history of heart disease, overweight/obese, hypertensive or diabetes, and occasionally (weekly) consumed red meat, take antihypertensive medication, and hyperlipidemia were considered the higher risk group compared to other subgroups

    Enhancement of the Spin Accumulation at the Interface Between a Spin-Polarized Tunnel Junction and a Semiconductor

    We report on spin injection experiments at a Co/Al2_2O3_3/GaAs interface with electrical detection. The application of a transverse magnetic field induces a large voltage drop ΔV\Delta V at the interface as high as 1.2mV for a current density of 0.34 nA.μm2\mu m^{-2}. This represents a dramatic increase of the spin accumulation signal, well above the theoretical predictions for spin injection through a ferromagnet/semiconductor interface. Such an enhancement is consistent with a sequential tunneling process via localized states located in the vicinity of the Al2_2O3_3/GaAs interface. For spin-polarized carriers these states act as an accumulation layer where the spin lifetime is large. A model taking into account the spin lifetime and the escape tunneling time for carriers travelling back into the ferromagnetic contact reproduces accurately the experimental results

    Closed-form Absorption Probability of Certain D=5 and D=4 Black Holes and Leading-Order Cross-Section of Generic Extremal p-branes

    We obtain the closed-form absorption probabilities for minimally-coupled massless scalars propagating in the background of D=5 single-charge and D=4 two-charge black holes. These are the only two examples of extremal black holes with non-vanishing absorption probabilities that can be solved in closed form for arbitrary incident frequencies. In both cases, the absorption probability vanishes when the frequency is below a certain threshold, and we discuss the connection between this phenomenon and the behaviour of geodesics in these black hole backgrounds. We also obtain leading-order absorption cross-sections for generic extremal p-branes, and show that the expression for the cross-section as a function of frequency coincides with the leading-order dependence of the entropy on the temperature in the corresponding near-extremal p-branes.Comment: Latex (3 times), 20 page

    Visualisation Tools for Multi-Perspective, Cross-Sector, Long-Term Infrastructure Performance Evaluation

    Across different infrastructure sectors there are systems that help to monitor the current and near-future operation and performance of a particular system. Whilst Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are critical to maintaining acceptable levels of functionality, they do not provide insights over the longer timescales across which strategic investment decisions play out. To understand how individual or multiple, interdependent, infrastructure sectors perform over longer timescales, capacity/demand modelling is required. However, the outputs of such models are often a complex high-dimensionality result-set, and this complexity is further compounded when crosssector evaluation is required. To maximise utility of such models, tools are required that can process and present key outputs. In this paper we describe the development of prototype tools for infrastructure performance evaluation in relation to different strategic decisions and the complex outputs generated from capacity and demand models of five infrastructure sectors (energy, water, waste water, solid waste, transport) investigated within the UK Infrastructure Transitions Research Consortium (ITRC). By constructing tools that expose various dimensions of the model outputs, a user is able to take greater control over the knowledge discovery process
