Spin Dynamics in the Magnetic Chains Arrays of Sr14Cu24O41: a Neutron Inelastic scattering Investigation
Below about 150 K, the spin arrangement in the chain arrays of Sr14Cu24O41 is
shown to develop in two dimensions (2D). Both the correlations and the
dispersion of the observed elementary excitations agree well with a model of
interacting dimers. Along the chains, the intra- and inter-dimer distances are
equal to 2 and about 3 times the distance (c) between neighboring Cu ions.
While the intra-dimer coupling is J about 10 meV, the inter-dimer couplings
along and between the chains are of comparable strenght, J// about -1.1 meV and
Jperp about 1.7 meV, respectively. This remarkable 2D arrangement satisfies the
formal Cu valence of the undoped compound. Our data suggest also that it is
associated with a relative sliding of one chain with respect to the next one,
which, as T decreases, develops in the chain direction. A qualitative analysis
shows that nearest inter-dimer spin correlations are ferromagnetic, which, in

Charge-density wave formation in Sr_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41}
The electrodynamic response of the spin-ladder compound
SrCaCuO () has been studied from
radiofrequencies up to the infrared. At temperatures below 250 K a pronounced
absorption peak appears around 12 cm in SrCuO for
the radiation polarized along the chains/ladders ().
In addition a strongly temperature dependent dielectric relaxation is observed
in the kHz - MHz range. We explain this behavior by a charge density wave which
develops in the ladders sub-system and produces a mode pinned at 12 cm.
With increasing Ca doping the mode shifts up in frequency and eventually
disappears for because the dimensionality of the system crosses over from
one to two dimensions, giving way to the superconducting ground state under

Observation of two-magnon bound states in the two-leg ladders of (Ca,La)14Cu24O41
Phonon-assisted 2-magnon absorption is studied at T=4 K in the spin-1/2
two-leg ladders of Ca_14-x La_x Cu_24 O_41 (x=5 and 4) for polarization of the
electrical field parallel to the legs and the rungs, respectively. Two peaks at
about 2140 and 2800 1/cm reflect van-Hove singularities in the density of
states of the strongly dispersing 2-magnon singlet bound state, and a broad
peak at about 4000 1/cm is identified with the 2-magnon continuum. Two
different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation
theory) describe the data very well for J_parallel = 1050 - 1100 1/cm and
J_parallel / J_perp = 1 - 1.1. A striking similarity of the high-energy
continuum absorption of the ladders and of the undoped high T_c cuprates is

Strongly correlated s-wave pairing in the n-type infinite-layer cuprate
Quasiparticle tunneling spectra of the electron-doped (n-type) infinite-layer
cuprate Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 reveal characteristics that counter a number of
common phenomena in the hole-doped (p-type) cuprates. The optimally doped
Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 with T_c = 43 K exhibits a momentum-independent
superconducting gap \Delta = 13.0 +- 1.0 meV that substantially exceeds the BCS
value, and the spectral characteristics indicate insignificant quasiparticle
damping by spin fluctuations and the absence of pseudogap. The response to
quantum impurities in the Cu-sites also differs fundamentally from that of the
p-type cuprates with d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairing symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Published in Physical Review Letter.

Substitution for Cu in the electron-doped infinite-layer superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, Ni reduces Tc much faster than Zn
We report on the effect of substitution for Cu on Tc of electron-doped
infinite-layer superconductors Sr0.9La0.1Cu1-xRxO2, R = Zn and Ni. We found
that Tc was nearly constant until x = 0.03 for R = Zn, while superconductivity
was nearly suppressed for x = 0.02 with dTc/dx = 20 K/% for R = Ni. This
behavior is very similar to that of conventional superconductors. These
findings are discussed in terms of the superconducting gap symmetry in the
cuprate superconductors including another electron-doped superconductor,

Nesting properties and anisotropy of the Fermi surface of LuNiBC
The rare earth nickel borocarbides, with the generic formula
NiBC, have recently been shown to display a rich variety of
phenomena. Most striking has been the competition between, and even coexistence
of, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. We have measured the Fermi
surface (FS) of LuNiBC, and shown that it possesses nesting
features capable of explaining some of the phenomena experimentally observed.
In particular, it had previously been conjectured that a particular sheet of FS
is responsible for the modulated magnetic structures manifest in some of the
series. We report the first direct experimental observation of this sheet.Comment: 4 pages, 4 PS figure
Ein systemischer Ansatz zum Altern im Arbeitskontext
In this article we present the interdisciplinary, developmental and systemic approach to the study of work and aging that guides research at the Jacobs Center on Lifelong Learning and Institutional Development (JCLL). We introduce basic principles of adult development including its plasticity, multi-directionality, and embeddedness in contexts. We describe the different dynamic internal (e.g., psychological, physiological) and external contexts (e.g., organizations, labor market institutions) relevant to the work context that influence adult development. We present how the various disciplinary perspectives at the JCLL contribute to a fuller understanding of various contextual systems and their interactions with regard to the work context. Finally, we describe how a systemic approach to research on work and aging can contribute to the creation of work contexts conducive to productive development across the adult lifespan as summarized in the notion of dynamic human resource management. Importantly, we consider a wider notion of 'productivity' that encompasses not only economic aspects but also intellectual, motivational and emotional outputs
Long-term effects of an inpatient weight-loss program in obese children and the role of genetic predisposition-rationale and design of the LOGIC-trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased worldwide, which is a serious concern as obesity is associated with many negative immediate and long-term health consequences. Therefore, the treatment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents is strongly recommended. Inpatient weight-loss programs have shown to be effective particularly regarding short-term weight-loss, whilst little is known both on the long-term effects of this treatment and the determinants of successful weight-loss and subsequent weight maintenance.</p> <p>The purpose of this study is to evaluate the short, middle and long-term effects of an inpatient weight-loss program for children and adolescents and to investigate the likely determinants of weight changes, whereby the primary focus lies on the potential role of differences in polymorphisms of adiposity-relevant genes.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The study involves overweight and obese children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years, who participate in an inpatient weight-loss program for 4 to 6 weeks. It started in 2006 and it is planned to include 1,500 participants by 2013. The intervention focuses on diet, physical activity and behavior therapy. Measurements are taken at the start and the end of the intervention and comprise blood analyses (DNA, lipid and glucose metabolism, adipokines and inflammatory markers), anthropometry (body weight, height and waist circumference), blood pressure, pubertal stage, and exercise capacity. Physical activity, dietary habits, quality of life, and family background are assessed by questionnaires. Follow-up assessments are performed 6 months, 1, 2, 5 and 10 years after the intervention: Children will complete the same questionnaires at all time points and visit their general practitioner for examination of anthropometric parameters, blood pressure and assessment of pubertal stage. At the 5 and 10 year follow-ups, blood parameters and exercise capacity will be additionally measured.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Apart from illustrating the short, middle and long-term effects of an inpatient weight-loss program, this study will contribute to a better understanding of inter-individual differences in the regulation of body weight, taking into account the role of genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p><a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01067157">NCT01067157</a>.</p
