Photometric redshifts for Quasars in multi band Surveys
MLPQNA stands for Multi Layer Perceptron with Quasi Newton Algorithm and it
is a machine learning method which can be used to cope with regression and
classification problems on complex and massive data sets. In this paper we give
the formal description of the method and present the results of its application
to the evaluation of photometric redshifts for quasars. The data set used for
the experiment was obtained by merging four different surveys (SDSS, GALEX,
UKIDSS and WISE), thus covering a wide range of wavelengths from the UV to the
mid-infrared. The method is able i) to achieve a very high accuracy; ii) to
drastically reduce the number of outliers and catastrophic objects; iii) to
discriminate among parameters (or features) on the basis of their significance,
so that the number of features used for training and analysis can be optimized
in order to reduce both the computational demands and the effects of
degeneracy. The best experiment, which makes use of a selected combination of
parameters drawn from the four surveys, leads, in terms of DeltaZnorm (i.e.
(zspec-zphot)/(1+zspec)), to an average of DeltaZnorm = 0.004, a standard
deviation sigma = 0.069 and a Median Absolute Deviation MAD = 0.02 over the
whole redshift range (i.e. zspec <= 3.6), defined by the 4-survey cross-matched
spectroscopic sample. The fraction of catastrophic outliers, i.e. of objects
with photo-z deviating more than 2sigma from the spectroscopic value is < 3%,
leading to a sigma = 0.035 after their removal, over the same redshift range.
The method is made available to the community through the DAMEWARE web

Steps toward a classifier for the Virtual Observatory. I. Classifying the SDSS photometric archive
Modern photometric multiband digital surveys produce large amounts of data
that, in order to be effectively exploited, need automatic tools capable to
extract from photometric data an objective classification. We present here a
new method for classifying objects in large multi-parametric photometric data
bases, consisting of a combination of a clustering algorithm and a cluster
agglomeration tool. The generalization capabilities and the potentialities of
this approach are tested against the complexity of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Widening use of dexamethasone implant for the treatment of macular edema
Sustained-release intravitreal 0.7 mg dexamethasone (DEX) implant is approved in Europe for the treatment of macular edema related to diabetic retinopathy, branch retinal vein occlusion, central retinal vein occlusion, and non-infectious uveitis. The implant is formulated in a biodegradable copolymer to release the active ingredient within the vitreous chamber for up to 6 months after an intravitreal injection, allowing a prolonged interval of efficacy between injections with a good safety profile. Various other ocular pathologies with inflammatory etioÂpathogeneses associated with macular edema have been treated by DEX implant, including neovascular age-related macular degeneration, Irvine–Gass syndrome, vasoproliferative retinal tumors, retinal telangiectasia, Coats’ disease, radiation maculopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and macular edema secondary to scleral buckling and pars plana vitrectomy. We undertook a review to provide a comprehensive collection of all of the diseases that benefit from the use of the sustained-release DEX implant, alone or in combination with concomitant therapies. A MEDLINE search revealed lack of randomized controlled trials related to these indications. Therefore we included and analyzed all available studies (retrospective and prospective, comÂparative and non-comparative, randomized and nonrandomized, single center and multicenter, and case report). There are reports in the literature of the use of DEX implant across a range of macular edema-related pathologies, with their clinical experience supporting the use of DEX implant on a case-by-case basis with the aim of improving patient outcomes in many macular pathologies. As many of the reported macular pathologies are difficult to treat, a new treatÂment option that has a beneficial influence on the clinical course of the disease may be useful in clinical practice
Price regulation of pluralistic markets subject to provider collusion
We analyse incentives for collusive behaviour when heterogeneous providers are faced with regulated prices under two forms of yardstick competition, namely discriminatory and uniform schemes. Providers are heterogeneous in the degree to which their interests correspond to those of the regulator, with close correspondence labelled altruism. Deviation of interests may arise as a result of de-nationalisation or when private providers enter predominantly public markets. We assess how provider strategies and incentives to collude relate to provider characteristics and across different market structures. We differentiate between "pure" markets with either only self-interested providers or with only altruistic providers and "pluralistic" markets with a mix of provider type. We find that the incentive for collusion under a discriminatory scheme increases in the degree to which markets are self-interested whereas under a uniform scheme the likelihood increases in the degree of provider homogeneity. Providers' choice of cost also depends on the yardstick scheme and market structure. In general, costs are higher under the uniform scheme, reflecting its weaker incentives. In a pluralistic market under the discriminatory scheme each provider's choice of cost is decreasing in the degree of the other provider's altruism, so a self-interested provider will operate at a lower cost than an altruistic provider. Under the uniform scheme providers always choose to operate at the same cost. The prospect of defection serves to moderate the chosen level of operating cost.Working Pape
Infinite index extensions of local nets and defects
Subfactor theory provides a tool to analyze and construct extensions of
Quantum Field Theories, once the latter are formulated as local nets of von
Neumann algebras. We generalize some of the results of [LR95] to the case of
extensions with infinite Jones index. This case naturally arises in physics,
the canonical examples are given by global gauge theories with respect to a
compact (non-finite) group of internal symmetries. Building on the works of
Izumi, Longo, Popa [ILP98] and Fidaleo, Isola [FI99], we consider generalized
Q-systems (of intertwiners) for a semidiscrete inclusion of properly infinite
von Neumann algebras, which generalize ordinary Q-systems introduced by Longo
[Lon94] to the infinite index case. We characterize inclusions which admit
generalized Q-systems of intertwiners and define a braided product among the
latter, hence we construct examples of QFTs with defects (phase boundaries) of
infinite index, extending the family of boundaries in the grasp of [BKLR16].Comment: 50 page
