    The role of macrophages and polymorphs in the levan-induced inhibition of Lewis lung carcinoma in C57BL mice.

    High-mol.-wt levan injected locally inhibits the growth of Lewis lung carcinoma in C57BL mice. The inhibition is dependent on the number of tumour cells injected and on the dose of levan. The inhibition decreases tumour incidence and size as well as prolonging survival. The polysaccharide is most effective when injected daily beginning on the day of tumour-cell inoculation. Treatment begun on later dates is less effective. Treatment begun one day before tumour-cell inoculation enhances tumour growth. Histological studies showed that levan induces an intense polymorphonuclear (PMN) reaction followed by accumulation of vacuolated, levan-laden macrophages. Both PMN and activated macrophages seemed to have an inhibitory effect upon the growth of the tumour. The effector role of PMN was not explained by the histological study. Tumour cells in close contact with levan-laden macrophages appeared mostly necrotic. Administration of levan begun one day before tumour-cell inoculation produced a similar reaction, but the infiltrating cells did not appear to approach and damage the tumour cells

    Capacity and Opportunity: Predicting Engagement for Middle School Students With Behavioral Disorders

    This study examined the capacity and opportunity scores of 36 middle school students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) on the student version of the American Institutes for Research (AIR) Self-Determination Scale across three school engagement factors: grade point averages (GPA), school absences, and frequency of school disciplinary encounters. Poor grades, school absences, and frequency of disciplinary actions pose academic problems for middle school students with EBD. Three multiple regression models determined the predictive relationships between self-determination Capacity and Opportunity subscale scores and GPA, Absences, and Discipline. Higher capacity and opportunity scores predicted greater student GPA, fewer student absences, and fewer disciplinary encounters for students at school.     A Comparison and Joint Analysis of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Measurements from Planck and Bolocam for a set of 47 Massive Galaxy Clusters

    We measure the SZ signal toward a set of 47 clusters with a median mass of 9.5×10149.5 \times 10^{14} M_{\odot} and a median redshift of 0.40 using data from Planck and the ground-based Bolocam receiver. When Planck XMM-like masses are used to set the scale radius θs\theta_{\textrm{s}}, we find consistency between the integrated SZ signal, Y5R500Y_{\textrm{5R500}}, derived from Bolocam and Planck based on gNFW model fits using A10 shape parameters, with an average ratio of 1.069±0.0301.069 \pm 0.030 (allowing for the 5\simeq 5% Bolocam flux calibration uncertainty). We also perform a joint fit to the Bolocam and Planck data using a modified A10 model with the outer logarithmic slope β\beta allowed to vary, finding β=6.13±0.16±0.76\beta = 6.13 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.76 (measurement error followed by intrinsic scatter). In addition, we find that the value of β\beta scales with mass and redshift according to βM0.077±0.026×(1+z)0.06±0.09\beta \propto M^{0.077 \pm 0.026} \times (1+z)^{-0.06 \pm 0.09}. This mass scaling is in good agreement with recent simulations. We do not observe the strong trend of β\beta with redshift seen in simulations, though we conclude that this is most likely due to our sample selection. Finally, we use Bolocam measurements of Y500Y_{500} to test the accuracy of the Planck completeness estimate. We find consistency, with the actual number of Planck detections falling approximately 1σ1 \sigma below the expectation from Bolocam. We translate this small difference into a constraint on the the effective mass bias for the Planck cluster cosmology results, with (1b)=0.93±0.06(1-b) = 0.93 \pm 0.06.Comment: Updated to include one additional co-author.     Acute effects of Vitamin D3 supplementation on muscle strength in Judoka athletes: a randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind trial

    Objective: Indoor athletes have been shown to be prone to vitamin D3 deficiency. The aim of the study was to examine the acute effects of vitamin D supplementation on muscle function using isokinetic dynamometry. Design: Randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind study. Setting: Institutional. Participants: Adult male white national level judoka athletes (n = 22) who were involved in full-time training. Exclusion criteria were vitamin supplementation, overseas travel to sunny climes, and/or an injury incurred during the last 3 months before testing. Interventions: Subjects were randomly allocated to the treatment (150 000IU vitamin D3) or placebo and given blinded supplements by an independent researcher. Participants were tested twice, 8 days apart, on a Monday morning before the start of judo training and after 2 days of rest. A 5 to 7 mL of blood sample was collected followed by isokinetic concentric quadriceps and hamstring muscle function assessments on the right leg at 30 and 200°·s. Main outcome measures: Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyze isokinetic muscle force and serum 25(OH)D3. Regression to the mean was used to examine changes in 25(OH)D3 levels over the study period. Results: The treatment group demonstrated a significant increase in serum 25(OH)D levels (34%, P ≤ 0.001) and muscle strength (13%, P = 0.01) between days 1 and 8. No significant differences were found for the placebo group for the same period. Conclusions: A single bolus of 150 000IU vitamin D3 had a significant positive effect on serum 25(OH)D levels and muscle function in vitamin D insufficient elite indoor athletes. Clinical relevance: Serum 25(OH)D3 levels of indoor athletes should be monitored throughout the year and especially during winter months. Beneficial responses, in muscle strength and serum 25(OH)D3, to 1 dose of vitamin D3 supplementation can be observed within 1 week of ingestion. Muscle strength is linked to serum 25(OH)D levels.
