`Interpolating' differential reductions of multidimensional integrable hierarchies

We transfer the scheme of constructing differential reductions, developed recently for the case of the Manakov-Santini hierarchy, to the general multidimensional case. We consider in more detail the four-dimensional case, connected with the second heavenly equation and its generalization proposed by Dunajski. We give a characterization of differential reductions in terms of the Lax-Sato equations as well as in the framework of the dressing method based on nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem.Comment: Based on the talk at NLPVI, Gallipoli, 15 page

Solid-state memcapacitive system with negative and diverging capacitance

We suggest a possible realization of a solid-state memory capacitive (memcapacitive) system. Our approach relies on the slow polarization rate of a medium between plates of a regular capacitor. To achieve this goal, we consider a multi-layer structure embedded in a capacitor. The multi-layer structure is formed by metallic layers separated by an insulator so that non-linear electronic transport (tunneling) between the layers can occur. The suggested memcapacitor shows hysteretic charge-voltage and capacitance-voltage curves, and both negative and diverging capacitance within certain ranges of the field. This proposal can be easily realized experimentally, and indicates the possibility of information storage in memcapacitive devices

Strategies for management of water resources for maintaining the ecological functions of wetlands

    Get PDF
The purpose of management strategies is to support a better allocation of water to the wetlands resources so that they can receive enough water, in quality, quantity and timeliness suitable to continue to provide their goods and services. The following strategic guidelines are explained below: Sustainability as a goal. Adequate water has to be provided to wetlands to sustain the functioning of these ecosystems, respecting their natural dynamics for the benefit of future generations. Where water requirements are not known, or where the impact of reducing water allocation to wetlands is unclear, the precautionary approachshould be applied. The wetland ecosystem is the resource base from which water is derived. It should be managed to protect the resource base in order to provide goods and services in a sustainable manner. This requires sufficient water allocation to maintain wetland ecosystem structure and function. This is directly compatible with the “wise use” concept embodied in the Ramsar Convention, which has been defined by the Conference of the Parties as “the sustainable utilisation of wetlands for the benefit of mankind in a way compatible with the maintenance of the natural properties of the ecosystem”.
